Route 66 Museum – Clinton, OK

SuperPizzaBoy took some time off from a family reunion last weekend to go check out the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK.

The museum is very nice and is very reasonably priced. They have lots and lots of exhibits concerning everything from early day construction to vehicles used during the road’s heyday to the motels and restaurants that lined the highway.

These type of “pop” machines were my favorite. They seemed like they kept the sodas the coolest.

The above was a little before my time. The company though, “Lee Way Motor Freight” was a major employer in Oklahoma City for a long time until they went out of business.

SPB loved the pay phone although he couldn’t figure out why it was needed. “Why didn’t people just use their cell phones?” When I told him that cell phones didn’t exist back then then, “What did they do when their cars broke down?” I told him that was always a challenge.

Remember how the tourist traps tried to lure the rube’s in?

SPB was a little leery of this one.

You’ll have to check it out for yourself!!

They have a hippie van. Remember hippies? I do. My mother was scandalized, I was jealous. Except when they were broken down. My Dad helped them out sometimes.

At the end of the museum they have a small theater that plays several short films on the history and culture of Route 66. They were interesting.

You know what separates a great museum from just a good museum?

A great museum has their own geocache. That’s the difference.

Check out the Route 66 Museum. It’s lots of fun!

Hey! Looks like SPB really liked touring that museum. I would too. Hmmm. Good question about cell phones. How did we exist without them?!

SPB looks like he is having a lot of fun, and a great place to have some fun in. Loved the photos as always.

Also wanted to thank you for wishing me a Happy Birthday 🙂

SPB is a cutie pie…he looks like he was having a great old time. What a cool museum. All kinds of neat things to see. Love the photos. You gave us a fine feel for the place. Genie

Yogi…Go For It!!! I love mine. It goes everywhere I go. All of my books are on it – and I was one of those who said I would NEVER fead an ebook. Not so! The apps are cheap and there are so many great ones for photography. And then there are the funky games I have found to help me TRY to ward off Alzheimer’s. I have the first generation one without the camera, but it is perfect for me. Between it and my iPhone – which I swore I would NEVER buy – are the funky loves of my life….other than Buddy and the kids. LOL Genie

PS…I LOVE your banner. For some reason it reminds me of the water pool in downtown Seattle with all of the fountains spraying water everywhere. The minute I see your thumbnail and your name, I know I am going to get to see that banner again and I get an immediate smile on my face. Thanks for always brightening my day. 🙂

Great pictorial tour, Yogi! It’s hard to believe that the young people of today find the things I knew and used most of my life obsolete!

Beautiful 1955 Bel Air 2 door hardtop. My mother had one just like this except it was Ivory over Turquoise. Sweet sweet car. I was 14 when she bought it and I thought I would die waiting until I was 16 and could drive it. I loved that car. She sold it while I was serving in Korea in 1965. It broke my heart.

OMG, what a trip down memory lane. My Mom had the turquoise version of that Bel Air also. I agree, soda was colder out of those pop machines. I’m a little concerned that SPB didn’t know what a pay phone is. Are there really no more out there in the world? There are still this type of tourist traps along western Rt 66. I Love the psychedelic VW and always wanted one. What a great museum and with a geocache no less. You guys obviously had a good time.

My grandmother had a pop machine like that one (except that it said Pepsi on the side) at her place of business. I used to have a great time filling the “pop box.”

This is a good museum. Very clever of them to have modern geocaches and old fashioned pay phones in the same place…
