Skywatch Friday – Something New Out on the Prairie

Used to be that what dominated the sky in western Oklahoma were grain elevators like this one in the town of Geary.

Grain elevator - Geary, Oklahoma

The farmers are still growing lots of wheat in Oklahoma but they have also leased their minerals to the natural gas producers who have brought new features to the landscape.

This is a very Okie post! This is what we see all the way through to the panhandle when we drive to Colorado. And out in Texas by my grandparents’ farm.
You do know it’s Thursday, right? 😉

Good photos, interesting text. At one time I had inlaws in Enid which has some giant grain elevators. The land around there is so flat that you can see the elevators from 50 miles away. You think you are almost there then you drive on and on.

Looks just like where I grew up in west Texas — drilling rigs as far as you could see in any direction. I think they were supposed to take the place of trees because we surely didn’t have any of those!! Ah, I do so love Washington and the Northwest!!

The skies in my part of the world are punctuated with high rises. I guess the difference is they were here when i arrived, so I haven’t had to adjust to their presence. I’m thinking the grain elevators and drilling rigs are no worse than high rises, but somehow, I imagine they are disturbing to those who crave open sky.

I know this won’t come as a surprise, but grain elevators are another one of my fascinations and they are often the playground for graffiti artists. =) Cool post!

That is a fine juxtaposition you’ve created with the old and new.

There is an American painter who painted a lot of grain elevators in the landscape but right now his name won’t come to me…

Thanks for visiting and your always thoughtful comments. 🙂
