Skywatch Friday – Waning Crescent Moon

IMG_7685

Last week I noticed one evening that the moon was setting down our street so I went and grabbed the “good” camera and a tripod and set it up for some delayed shutter action and took some shots. I think they are okay for what they are given the world’s brightest street light was lined up with the moon.

When I zoomed in my superzoom things got a little better but still kind of grainy. I think you call this a waning crescent moon because at the time the crescent was getting smaller every night. Then of course we get the new moon and then the crescent starts growing until we get a half moon and then when over half the moon is illuminated it is the gibbous moon. I have gone my whole life and not noticed the word “gibbous” until recently and now I see it everywhere.  Stuff like that happens all the time to me. I see a word that I swear I have never seen before and after I look it up I see it everywhere. I guess it means that I’m either really slow or I’m still learning, or maybe both.

MoonConnection.com has some excellent material on the moon and moon phases. Check them out.

Great photos, Yogi. You are not the only one who’s slow or still learning. I also have “light bulbs” turn on and wonder why I never knew before whatever it was that turned on. 😉

Beautiful moon shots Yogi – I think you’ve surpassed yourself.
I’m very much with you on words and, just recently, I have had a word going round and round in my head (a bit like tunes) and that word is nomenclature. I had to look the damn thing up to see what it meant:-)

I can’t hand hold my big girl camera too well for night shots. I really need to get a tripod! These pictures look nice despite the street lights illuminating the sky. I just love pictures of the moon! It looks so cold in your neck of the woods. Would you kindly NOT send any of that stuff to Knoxville? I’m so ready for spring to return. 🙂

Moon shots are more challenging that most people realize and the worlds brightest street light simply adds to the obstacles. Well done Yogi. I still haven’t really made an effort to “shoot the moon.” Maybe soon.

Love the gibbous in the shadow and the new moon/crescent in the light — I would love to get both with my camera some day too. 😀

I am not one to properly name these phases either but love moon shots nonetheless!

I think you did great on your night shots. I never seem to have that luck. Glad you let us enjoy visiting you each week on Sky Watch. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful pictures. I love learning new words and that happens to me a lot too, once I know it I see it.

Hope this means you are feeling better. I didn’t comment on your two sicky” posts because I didn’t want to catch anything ! (Really, I am behind and didn’t want to burden you with too many comments as I’m just catching up today).
