2015 Grand National Wedding Cake Competition – Grand Prize Winner

Ornate Opulence

This is the Grand Prize winner at the Grand National Wedding Cake Competition held at the Tulsa State Fair this past weekend. It is titled “Ornate Opulence” and was baked by Lori Cossou of of Welch, Oklahoma. She got $44,000 in cash and $28,350 in prizes for her entry. Ms. Cossou is a three time winner of the event. The theme this year is “Fashion Week.”

Ink and Lace This is the First Runner Up cake named “Ink and Lace Autumn Affair” by Angela Negron of Austin, Texas. I got dozens of pics of cakes, cookies, and various other sugar arts. These two examples set the tone for the cakes. This is the third year I have attended the show and I just love it. Check out the Tulsa World article on the show.

Cookies from the 2015 Oklahoma Sugar Art ShowThey also had a cookie division. I really liked these fish cookies set in an aquarium. Sugar Art Shoe Collage from the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show

They had a shoe competition this year. This is a collage of some high heels. My favorite were Dorothy’s Ruby Red Slippers in the lower left corner.

Oklahoma Sugar Art ShowAnd you know what, I am not sure what the category is but this is all sugar art also. Mask cake from 2015 Oklahoma Sugar Art Show

There used to be a Mask Division that I liked but for some reason they ended that. Here is a cake with a Mask that I liked.

Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show

Saturday I ventured back out to the Fair Grounds here in Tulsa to the State Fair to see the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show and Grand National Wedding Cake Competition.

I have no idea if the cakes are edible but the decorations are amazing. I ended up taking 152 photographs of the event and no I’m not going to make you suffer through them. The skill of these sugar artists is just wonderful.

These are like wedding cakes on steroids.

I have no idea how one would have the patience and stamina to do all the detailing involved.

The creativity was pretty far out there also. But you know the cakes were not the most impressive things are I saw there.

I was blown away by the masks. I wasn’t even expecting them.

They are incredibly delicate. Earlier a motorized wheel chair bumped into a table and destroyed almost all the masks on the table. I’m sure that everybody felt terrible about it. You can be sure that I kept my distance.

Have you ever been to a sugar art show? I’m coming back next year. If you haven’t been yet this year, you are too late, the sugar art show closed Sunday.
