Skywatch Friday – Scanning the Skies

Sunset about a week ago

How is everybody doing with their social isolation. Here in Oklahoma the Governor, despite the advice from the medical community, has decided to start opening businesses starting tomorrow (Friday, April 24). So we’ll see what happens. Our family will continue with the social isolation until we deem it safe as we do have extended family members in town that are at risk.

Sunrise that same morning

In the meantime I have my cameras including my new drone to keep me occupied. It turns out that although it is capable of some fancy aerial maneuvers I use it mainly like a periscope. I find myself in the morning and the evening looking at the sky and if I see something interesting I launch it. I still am using what I call the “training wheels” the propeller guards which add quite a bit of weight and lower the performance but I can still get it up to about 125 meters which is I can barely see it when it is up there. So get it up there and turn it this and that to see what is going on with the sky. Nothing to get in the way then.

Evening sky after a Thunderstorm

I am kind of an incrementalist, plus the thing is kind of expensive, so I will gradually let it fly higher and a little bit further as time goes on. I don’t think I’ll ever let it out of my sight.

And I am still experimenting with it. Here is a grain elevator near where we live. So just did an elevator eyes so to speak with the drone. Going from street level up and then back down. I edited the video on my Iphone. Imovie is a great app that is simple to use.

And then, this has nothing to do with skies but I love watching videos of the Irish dancers. How do you get your legs to move that fast is what I want to know.

I wish everybody a great week ahead and I hope everybody and their friends and family are staying safe.

I’m planning to keep on staying at home too. Colorado is opening up a few things next week, but things will be pretty much the same. I think Irv is jealous of all your drone footage. He got his out yesterday and got it charged and ready to fly, now to wait for a day that isn’t too windy. The shots you take from above are beautiful!

So, music in your grain elevator video, too! I’ve never used iMovie. I haven’t been watching the sunset that much; so dreary here in upstate New York (got snow flurries again today. Now spring, we mean business, will you get winter out of here????) but there is always seeing the green pastures of my fellow sky watching bloggers. We are all closed down here until at least May 15. Maybe then they will go county by county. And we have to wear masks in any place outside where we could encounter someone else. Also mandated in any store.

You are improving with the drone. Fun idea to check out the sunset and I like the grain silo. A RV friend uses his drone to check ahead on gravel roads for possible camps or bad road.

Our MCO has been furthered extended to the 12th May to curb the spread of the virus. Beautiful evening and sunrise photos. You are having fun flying the drone.

The 1st one is my fave photo out of the lot. Social isolation here, hmm well hopefully next week we will be moving to a lower level – apart from the financial broke-ness I’m experiencing I’m getting a little past it but I know it has to be done.

Hello, Love the sunset and sunrise photos. Neat video and music! Hubby and I will continue the social distancing until we feel safe…I trust our governor to give us the facts and info we need. The number need to go down, not up! Take care! Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy weekend!

We finally have masks. I venture out to get groceries and medical supplies that is about it. I love that you are trying out a drone. Jeeper, I’d keep my eye on that drone too because of the $$$. Stay safe.

You’re getting some great sky shots with your new drone. Great video too. So interesting now, with states, counties, and even cities having inconsistent safety guidelines. Were having very hot temps in S CA right now, and they are anticipating having a hard time this weekend keeping people off the beaches!

You didn’t strike me like a drone-guy, but I hope it brings you pleasure:)
My sense is that the sooner businesses are opened up, the better. Of course there is nervousness involved, but we can’t live our lives dominated by fear. Maybe because I’m a psychologist and not a medical doc like my brother, I can see they’re wrong on this one (in general – more depression and suicides, addictions, and PTSD as we go longer on non-active). Of course there will still be more cases and deaths, but lets face it, the normal flue has hundreds of victims each year, and never something is done about that. So, be encouraged, and hope for the best for Oklahoma!

Beautiful sky … not too much of that here in Eugene late,y. We are just now starting to actually feel the social distancing isolation. . Because the first weeks we were isolated while traveling, so there was a lot to think about and different scenery to see. And then the first week home was just busy getting unpacked and opened up here and it felt good to stay in one place. Now, not quite such a joy, but we do have lots of ways to amuse ourselves at home … and, like you, relatively safe places where we can walk. We’re not planning on “un-distancing” any time soon for sure.
