Our World – Running on Empty

I’ve been scanning old photos. I’ve been running a long time and found a couple pics from the 1990’s.

I walked the last mile but tried running when I saw the camera.

Here I am at the Madison Marathon in Wisconsin in 1997 I think. It was my second marathon. The first was the year before in Oklahoma City, the Jim Thorpe Marathon. Me and about 45 other people ran three times around Lake Overholser. No water stops, no traffic control, no nothing. I finished in five hours and two minutes, or so my faulty memory tells me. A year later in Madison I finished in Five hours and one minute. So I should have kept on going!! But I decided not to run any more marathons.

Some things haven’t changed over the years. A thermal blanket and a bottle of water. And I still run with perfect posture.

Here is a more recent photo. I’d kill to have a photograph of me running where it looks like I am running. I kind of look like a guy in a hurry to get to a donut shop. I love running but I have never been all that good at it.

I’m linking with Our World Tuesday today.

I like Cycling Marathons because my left leg doesn’t let me run very far anymore (I fell on it twice in the last 10 yrs.) but I can out bike my teen grandkids.

Hahaha ā€¦ looking like the guy running to the donut shop!! You gave me a much needed laugh. Iā€™d say humor is at least as important as running. šŸ™‚

We did the wave for you at the Madison marathon. That was my first 5K. At least we’re both still active as we move into old age. I did a half marathon 5 years ago and decided that was marked off my bucket list forever. Run Alan run!

I admire your love of running. I was never a runner. I was a sprinter of no great note and I considered anything over 400 meters to be long distance. I absolutely hated the 800 and having to run a mile for time in the military was my worst nightmare.
Yes, one of the best things about retirement is that you pick your schedule. You can do your favorite things when everyone else is at work! If we ever get over COVID-19 you can go to the movies in the afternoon for $6.00. You can take day trips to your favorite places in the middle of the week and leave the week-ends to the working class. There are over 40 miles of walking and bike trails here that one can enjoy while others are busy going to meetings and making deadlines. Yes, retirement is the best. Have a blessed week.

Alan – I love your sense of humor. One marathon is huge; to do more than one is a major accomplishment. I have a love/hate relationship with running – I complain about getting started, but I love it once I am out there, especially when I can run on nature trails. Happy Fourth of July!
