The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/secretary-jewell-national-park-service-director-jarvis-announce-new-national\" target=\"_blank\">National Park Service announced the designation of Turkey Mountain&#8217;s Red, Blue, and Yellow trails <\/a>(about 7 miles total) as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americantrails.org\/nationalrecreationtrails\/stateindex.html\" target=\"_blank\">National Recreation Trail<\/a>s and will be added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nts\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Trails System<\/a>. The announcement comes just in time for <a href=\"http:\/\/nationaltrailsday.americanhiking.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Trails Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"DSCN5768\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/27315907832\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/8\/7557\/27315907832_69af49b39a_z.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN5768\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>No, this doesn&#8217;t mean that the Feds are coming in to take over the trails, the designation recognizes existing trails built and maintained by others. The National Park Service will provide special trail markers and add it to their web site. The main thing is that the designation provides additional credibility to those who are trying to get grants for Turkey Mountain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"DSCN5720\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/27138733950\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/8\/7367\/27138733950_bbbb187af3_z.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN5720\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Kudos to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulsaurbanwildernesscoalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tulsa\u00a0Urban Wilderness Coalition<\/a> who led the effort behind the scenes to get the designation. UWC is quite an organization. They started last year in response to a <a href=\"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=9306\" target=\"_blank\">tone deaf effort by the City of Tulsa and Simon Properties to build a cheesy outlet mall <\/a>on Turkey Mountain. Thanks to the efforts of TUWC and other organizations, the community rose up in opposition and Simon is proceeding on building the mall at a more appropriate location. I was amazed, do you know how many times Oklahoman&#8217;s are successful in opposing bad development ideas? Very few times is the answer.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"DSCN5677\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/26727660013\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c6.staticflickr.com\/8\/7042\/26727660013_6e34f814ca_z.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN5677\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So this is great news but the preservation of Turkey Mountain is still a process more than event. Steps are continuing to be made by both private and public entities. <a href=\"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=10611\" target=\"_blank\">The citizens of Tulsa passed a bond issue to provide funds for the purchase of the proposed Simon Malls site<\/a>. After the close on that purchase, the River Parks Authority, who administer the land, installed new cable and post fencing to keep vehicles off that property.
