My dad&#8217;s assisted living center had a viewing organized for the residents, staff, and guests. My sister had already bought me a pair of glasses.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"20170821-110031-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/36539830570\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4427\/36539830570_cb87ae22cf_z.jpg\" alt=\"20170821-110031-2\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They brought out a bunch of chairs and provided refreshments and snacks. They had a narrator also telling us what was going on.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"20170821-113019-5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/36539837270\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4432\/36539837270_c4b1e505d4_z.jpg\" alt=\"20170821-113019-5\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So I got out there kind of late. The sun seemed as bright as ever but you would tell that the temperature was lowering and a breeze was picking up. Also, as the eclipse progressed, it didn&#8217;t seem to get that much darker until the very end but we could hear the crickets start chirping and the birds started singing. Right before totality it started getting notably darker.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"20170821-113257-7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/36936011075\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4420\/36936011075_df7ba4d7f4_z.jpg\" alt=\"20170821-113257-7\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It got pretty dark but there was light on the horizon for 360 degrees around us. The narrator told us that we could take our glasses off and look directly at the eclipse. The above is a NASA map of the route of totality.
