{"id":11704,"date":"2018-02-10T07:14:57","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T13:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=11704"},"modified":"2018-02-08T21:41:32","modified_gmt":"2018-02-09T03:41:32","slug":"kehinde-wileys-new-painting-at-philbrook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=11704","title":{"rendered":"Kehinde Wiley&#8217;s new Painting at Philbrook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Equestrian Portrait of King Philip IV, 2016-2017 by Kehinde Wiley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/26287712578\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4659\/26287712578_779a3ef2a1_z.jpg\" alt=\"Equestrian Portrait of King Philip IV, 2016-2017 by Kehinde Wiley\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I was running around at lunch Thursday and decided to pop in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/philbrook.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philbrook Museum<\/a> to check out their new acquisition of <a href=\"http:\/\/kehindewiley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kehinde Wiley&#8217;s<\/a> &#8220;Equestrian Portrait of King Philip IV.&#8221; I&#8217;ve seen several photographs of it but you know, with paintings you really have to be be there.<\/p>\n<p>The painting is huge. It takes up a whole wall. It shows a black man in a modern urban camo outfit atop a horse in a classic pose, complete with a sword. The rest of the painting could have come from a few hundred years ago. It is obvious that the painter is skilled and I didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;Are you kidding me&#8221; reaction I get sometimes with modern art. Wiley has been chosen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2017\/nov\/26\/kehinde-wiley-creating-portrait-barack-obama-huge-responsibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paint President Obama&#8217;s <\/a>portrait to be unveiled this year.<\/p>\n<p>The subject in the painting is very engaging. He is kind of half glancing at the room and that has changes the tone from your usual painting. And the painting&#8217;s colors are vivid and the paint seems so fresh it sparkles.\u00a0 It is a striking work.\u00a0 And yet I worry about how this work will age. Will it still be on display in 50 years or will it be stuck in storage somewhere. I know it is modern art, and nobody knows how modern art is going to &#8220;age.&#8221; So I am glad that they went got this instead of something &#8220;safer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend that you check this painting out for yourself.
