I had never heard of it but thanks to my buddy Mr. Google I found out that it was a fund raiser for New Life Ranch, a summer camp 80 miles east of Tulsa in Ozarks. So I signed up for the 5K race and Saturday made my way over there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2hWj9Ab\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49185032526_ed9f2c70e0.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF9470\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>The Awards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The temp was 33 degrees as I left Tulsa and kept getting colder and colder until I got to the camp down in the Flint Valley where it was a brisk 27F. I was a little underdressed but as the sun came up, the wind quit and although the temperature didn&#8217;t change much it felt a lot warmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2hWkaoH\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49185230337_6c79762cf6.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF9471\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>The medals. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So I ran with Paula, and her friend Misti, and her husband. When I say run, well I guess we walked.  Sorry, I walk most of my races these days. Hope I didn&#8217;t burst your bubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/thLyzTWoUvU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There were two other races going on, which is typical for trail runs. A 10K and 25K with staggered starts and we run on each others courses quite a bit so you have to pay attention to the ribbon colors. We managed to stay on the right trail, which is an accomplishment for me given that I got off course on two races this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2hWk6Nr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49185218257_fa2d4451e8.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF9481\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Some of the many horses at New Life who ignored me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And we took lots of photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2hWk1Rh\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49185201602_9900d94673.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF9495\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>Beautiful Flint Creek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Flint Creek, an incredibly beautiful, clear running creek runs through the property. I had no idea that Oklahoma had such a pretty creek. The water quality in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjrh.com\/news\/local-news\/changes-could-be-coming-to-chicken-houses-in-delaware-county-in-the-wake-of-homeowner-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"area is under threat  (opens in a new tab)\">area is under threat <\/a>because of &#8220;chicken houses&#8221; put up by farmers in the area where they raise hundreds of thousands of chickens and the associated runoff and odors. After seeing the creek I can understand why area residents are concerned. The state has a very muddled response, meaning that they are doing nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2hWgrby\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49184503008_e962c0a57a.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF9496\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>I love reflections<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A good time was had by all. A great course, great shirt, and medal, a nice grilled chicken sandwich lunch afterwards. So I give this race five stars out of five. I was also first in my age group of the race.
