It was constructed between 1772 and 1816 and is still an <a href=\"https:\/\/sfranchos.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sfranchos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">active church<\/a>. It is built of adobe and the church members spend two weeks in June ever year remudding the exterior with a mixture of mud and straw. If you look closely you can see the straw in the exterior walls. It is considered to be Spanish Colonial architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qbkuBU\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53938223338_26bacc86d2.jpg\" alt=\"53915340305_4bcba549a6_o\" width=\"500\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was designated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/san-francisco-de-assisi-mission-church-ranchos-de-taos-new-mexico.htm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/san-francisco-de-assisi-mission-church-ranchos-de-taos-new-mexico.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Historic Landmark<\/a> in 1970 by the National Park Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qbmxzs\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53938428400_9aafa88455_c.jpg\" alt=\"53914005482_d4a881b7d4_o\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s obviously well loved by the parishoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2qbjdei\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53937973091_32790a9b30.jpg\" alt=\"53914891001_58e9018930_o\" width=\"500\" height=\"434\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The church has been a favorite subject for years by artists and photographers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/489156\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/489156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Georgia O&#8217;Keefe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/collection\/art-object-page.66722.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/collection\/art-object-page.66722.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ansel Adams<\/a>. (Check the links for images of the art work.) The artists have focused almost exclusively on the back of the church which has three massive beehive shaped buttresses. I guess that I am not artist because I find the front of the church to be much more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2q9ib2i\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53915137563_5be26d4102_c.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC0408\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior is gorgeous. The altar looks beautiful. I brightened the image above so you could see but did not advance beyond the closed entrance door. Whenever we went through the area when I was a kid we would stop and look. I think it has an almost magical presence.
