{"id":669,"date":"2012-05-20T04:31:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-20T04:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=669"},"modified":"2014-06-15T04:52:08","modified_gmt":"2014-06-15T04:52:08","slug":"in-memory-of-a-forest-fire-fighter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yogisden.us\/?p=669","title":{"rendered":"In Memory of a Forest Fire Fighter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rimcountrymuseums.com\/rim_country_museum.htm\">Rim Country Museum<\/a> in Payson, Arizona stands a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/marker.asp?marker=34431\">monument to forest fire fighters<\/a> who perished in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/7170132890\/\" title=\"IMG_0746 by alnbbates, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_0746\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/7170132890_e8c754ed44-225x300.jpg\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">There are way too many names on the plaque. Six of them are from the nearby 1990 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.paysonroundup.com\/news\/2010\/jul\/09\/dude-fire-revealed-monster-still-stalks-rim-countr\/\">Dude Fire<\/a>.&#8221; Three people are from 1961 within a week of each other. I knew one of them. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wlfalwaysremember.org\/incident-lists\/259-hatchery-fire-spotter-plane.html\">Constantine (Corky) Kodz<\/a> was a Forest Service employee working as a fire observer in a plane that collided with another airplane over a forest fire known as the &#8220;Hatchery Fire&#8221; near Payson. Corky was not only a coworker of my Dad but Corky, his wife, and kids were close family friends and also members of our church. Kodz&#8217;s death was the first that I remember and it shook me up quite a bit.
