We spent two nights in Vicksburg, Mississippi touring the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/vick\/index.htm\">Vicksburg National Military Park<\/a> there. One of the most sobering sights is the Park&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cemetery\" rel=\"wikipedia\" title=\"Cemetery\">cemetery<\/a>. It holds about 19,000 graves including 17,000 from &nbsp;the Siege.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/5991988581\/\" title=\"DSCI0897 by alnbbates, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DSCI0897\" height=\"375\" src=\"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/5991988581_45f2c97051-300x225.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the siege the fatalities were buried all over the place. After the war, the bodies were disinterred and brought to the cemetery. The short headstones are of unidentified bodies. The taller headstones are identified. There are &nbsp;17,000 Union graves in the cemetery. Including about 10,000 casualties of the <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.3436,-90.8511&amp;spn=0.05,0.05&amp;q=32.3436,-90.8511%20(Siege%20of%20Vicksburg)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" title=\"Siege of Vicksburg\">Siege of Vicksburg<\/a>. The rest were&nbsp;re-interred&nbsp;from elsewhere in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana., 13,000 are unidentified. Until 1961 when they ran out of room veterans from America&#8217;s other wars were also buried there. As the &nbsp;cemetery was for Federal soldiers only, the Confederate veterans were buried in other cemeteries in Vicksburg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/28381904@N06\/5992548554\/\" title=\"DSCI0899 by alnbbates, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DSCI0899\" height=\"375\" src=\"http:\/\/yogisden.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/5992548554_27afc2b2ce-300x225.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">(Sorry about the blurry photograph.
