Sweetie and I went to see “The King’s Speech” recently. It is about King George VI of England and his speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The King took over the crown right at the beginning of World War II under very difficult circumstances. He had a very bad stammer from childhood that he could not rid himself of despite seeing many doctors and specialist. His wife found an obscure speech therapist, Logue, who treated the Duke of York (who later became King George VI, successfully.
So its about history and overcoming and becoming a leader but it is mainly about the relationship and the friendship between the Duke of York and Lionel Logue and how a common man helped a man become King.
This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I give it five stars out of five. Rated R because of language. Get a sitter for the kids, go see this movie. Its great.
Colin Firth makes a great Duke of York and later King. Helen Bonham Carter plays the supportive wife, Queen Elizabeth. Geoffrey Rush absolutely steals the show as Lionel Logue the therapist.
SuperPizzaBoy and I went to see the movie Yogi Bear. Dan Aykroyd provides the voice of Yogi and Justin Timberlake is Boo Boo’s voice.
The movie had bad reviews so my expectations were low but I didn’t think that it was really that bad. I mean what do expect from Yogi? SPB and I had some popcorn and enjoyed ourselves.
I give it a rating of of 5 stars out of 10. Kids may like it, the parents are happy that the kids are happy. We didn’t see the 3D version. It would be hard to imagine that it would be worth it.
Sweetie and I had a date night and went to see the thriller RED. It is loads of fun. RED is an ancronym for “Retired – Extremely Dangerous.” Basically the retired guys and gals played by Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Helen Mirren saw something they shouldn’t of in central America back in the 1980’s and our Vice President wants to take them out and so sicks the CIA on them.
Its really no contest as the Generation X slacker agents get mowed down by the Boomer old guard. Plus, you can guess that Bruce Willis takes the best looking GenY woman as his own. She is a little resistant at first so he has to use duct tape and ropes to bind her up and throw her over his shoulder. Don’t you love old fashioned romances?
Check out the web site. Lots of fun and games there.
I give the movie 7 stars out of 10. Go see it; don’t take the kids.
My favorite Oklahoma Ladies, the lovely, talented, smart, and very hot RHOKing RHOKette’s of the Real Housewives of Oklahoma have as the subject of this week’s McLinky Monday:
What is your favorite John Hughes movie and why?
I have to tell you “16 Candles, isn’t it.” Sweetie likes it, when its on, I grab my Sports Illustrated. Nothing wrong with it, its just not me.
The Breakfast Club isn’t it either. I like it and, even though I was never a Generation X slacker nor did I ever spend a minute in detention or ever get in trouble because I was such a perfect guy. Funny enough though, I can see a couple of the RHOK’ers and their spouses in the movie. No need to explain myself. Nope, I’ll just leave it at that.
My favorite John Hughes movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day off. The first time I saw I laughed till my sides hurt. I have seen it dozens of times and it still makes me laugh.
I never get tired of watching it and it seems like I have the whole thing memorized. I recently got a DVD of the movie at an Energy Industry function. Actually my door prize was “Flash Dance” which I was going to throw in the trash but I ran into somebody who loves that movie and her door prize was Ferris. So we both ended up happy.
I put it in contention for the fourth best movie ever. (“Chinatown”, “Cars”, and “Down With Love” are ahead of it.)
Anyways, go check out the RHOK and tell them what your favorite John Hughes movie is and buy a tee shirt.
Last weekend the Yogi’s loaded up and went to see “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” in 3D.
The movies are based on the multi-volume “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” books written by Kathryn Lasky. SuperPizzaBoy has read all the books and he tells me that the movie covers the first three books. He also tells me that the books are wonderful and the movie follows the books faithfully.
I thought the movie was wonderful also. The animation is great and the movie was a totally satisfying experience. Some of the fighting scenes are intense so keep that in mind if you have younger kids.
I rate the movie four stars out of four.
Here is the movie site. Lots there, games and such. Here is the book site, lots there also. See the movie, buy the books.
Sweetie and I went to see “The Switch” with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. It’s kind of a romantic comedy. Let me see, what’s it about? Kate (Anniston) is 40, single, childless. The only man in her life is Wally (Bateman) who plays her friend, except he loves her, but won’t tell her. Kate’s throws an insemination party. The donor and his wife show up (he needs the money) and the donor makes his donation. Before Kate can do the turkey baster thing Wally tosses the donor’s donation and substitutes his own (fantasizing about Diane Sawyer!!!). Kate doesn’t know that, goes ahead with the turkey baster and we move seven years later and you know that’s when we have more fun.
I’m just going to tell you that I would give this movie a rating of 1.5 stars out of 4. Aniston and Bateman have exactly zero chemistry together. She comes across as distracted and basically calls her performance in. He is small, mean, cruel, and pathetic. Jeff Goldblum is in the movie but I am not quite sure why.
The best part of this movie is the cute little boy played by Bryce Robinson,
and Juliette Lewis, whose character is Anniston’s fun, crazy, out of control, but keeps everything going, friend Debbie. She provides some much needed comic relief to this film. In fact, if you are going to see the movie, go see it for her performance. Everybody knows a Debbie. I know several. They are the people who make life interesting.
It’s HOT in Oklahoma these days. We decided to beat the heat this weekend by going to the movies.
We were chilling. We got there early and got the special footrest seats.
Can you guess whose feet belongs to who?
We went to see The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It stars Nicholas Cage in what is for him a restrained performance, which means that he is over the top.
I could tell you what the movie is about but who cares. It is about saving the world from ultimate evil via a reluctant hero who has to learn what to do and at the same time get the girl. What else, oh, yeah, here is the girl, Becky:
Becky is very sweet, I told SuperPizzaBoy that he should be looking for sweet girls like Becky. I love the name if nothing else. He said that he is not ready. I’m glad to hear to hear that son.
Anyway, a kids movie that the parents can like. It has action, romance, wonderful special effects, great fighting scenes, dragons, special powers, and they keep the language cleaned up (Thanks Disney!)
The other day Sweetie and I loaded up and went off to see Eclipse. I was smart this time. I didn’t read the book! The second book in the series was one of the most excrutiatingly bad books I have ever read. I mean it had its moments but I almost missed them because of hundreds of pages of brooding and moping. Magically, the movie, covered those hundreds of page in literally five seconds. Oh the magic of film!
This movie starts out pretty good. There is a slaughter going on in Seattle. Somebody is killing off lots and lots of ordinary citizens. The good vampires of Forks are concerned about it but don’t quite know what to do.
While they are concerned the mopestress Bella is mooning and moping over Edward. She is at the same time teasing poor old Jacob, or he is teasing her or I don’t know what is going on. Edward finally asks Bella, “Doesn’t he have a shirt?” Meanwhile Bella is trying to seduce Edward. He finally has to say, “Bella, would you please stop trying to take your clothes off?” So I think the real romantic story in the movie is Edward and Jacob. Yep, you read it here first. But I’m not going to spoil it for you, go see the movie yourself and tell me what you think.
I mean really, why is Edward wasting his time on teen age moper doper Bella, when he could have a woman.
Yeah, Victoria. You know Bella got her boyfriend killed so Edward would just have to hand over little miss useless to Victoria and she would be forever grateful. I think Victoria is a million times hotter than Bella. What do you think? C’mon Edward wake up, scrape Bella off, she is no good for you.
And Bella, what’s wrong with Jacob? At least he is alive and better looking. Plus Bella, what are you doing proclaiming passionate love for Edward but then cuddling up to Jacob every chance to get and then acting shocked when he thinks you like him. Oh, I just plain don’t get it. You know they should have let Tom Clancy write the screenplay. He knows whats what. Know something else, Sharon Stone would make a great Bella. She put a little oomph in the role.
But hey, there is lots of action in the movie to save it from the lame romantic parts. The best part is a vampire amphibious invasion that would have made General Douglas MacArthur proud. A few of these guys and the WWII would have been over a lot sooner. After the invasion there is some great vampire/werewolf battle scenes. They’ll make you want to go see the Lord of the Rings trilogy again.
The movie is not too bad. I give it three stars out of four.
Hey, can anybody tell me if the book is any good or is it a waste of time. I need to know.
Sunday afternoon the Yogi’s loaded up and went to see Toy Story 3 3D.
SuperPizzaBoy and Sweetie ready for 3D
Andy, the owner of the toys, is all growns up and is getting ready to leave home for college. His mother is after him to clean up his room and either store the toys or give them away. They end up in … Hey I’m not going to give away the story. I’m just going to tell you if the movie is good or not.
The movie is good. Its a kids movie that parents can enjoy. I liked it better than the first two Toy Story movies.
Check out the web site. It is packed with features.
