SuperPizzaBoy and I went geocaching at Oxley Nature Center at Mohawk Park Sunday. It wasn’t the pine barrens of New Jersey but it was kind of spooky. The leaves are gone and the woods are pretty tangled up from the ice storm a couple years ago. But hey we had a good time.
Off we went down the seldom traveled trail.
I kind of like the woods caches. Urban micros are fine but I like finding caches away from a crowd. Boy were we away from the crowds.
The next one was a little tied up. It was put out by a bunch of cachers last year who showed up and cleared some of the trails from storm debris. There is a tradition in caching of “CITO” an acronym for “Cache In, Trash Out.” Part of giving back to the parks and landowners who host the caches.
I went back Monday at lunch to find another. It is down this long road, converted to a trail. It was pretty lonely when I started.
When I got close to the cache site, suddenly there were a lot of people nearby. I tried to act keenly interested in this, even taking pictures of it.
So I wouldn’t reveal the location of this.
Geocachers call non-geocachers “Muggles.” Muggles mean well but they often take off with the cache, container and all, or vandalize it, so we make pains to make sure that the caches stay concealed for the benefit of the next person looking and the owner of the cache. If the cache goes missing or is damaged it is the responsibility of the cache owner to replace or repair it.
SuperPizzaBoy and I have found 873 geocaches and have hidden 26.
Check out geocaching.com for how to join in the fun.
After reading your post, I went to Google because I don’t know much about Geocaching. I guess I am a Muggle.
It looks like you and SPB had a lot of fun, I’ll have to read some more!
Sunny 🙂
Has anyone stolen any of the geocaches you have placed?
@Sunny – you are an educated muggle now. I have personally converted about 5 people from Christianity to geocaching. So you better be careful.
@Baloney – Of the 26 caches that son and I have placed only 14 still survive.
2 fell victim to a highway widening projects.
1 is a casualty of the new ONEOK Baseball Stadium being built downtown.
3 had to be pulled because the landowners cleared the trees on their property.
6 fell victim to repeated muggling.
I think I’m entitled to some stimulus funds to deal with my pain and suffering.
You’re such an adventurer with that stuff. That was interesting.
Geocache quests sound fun, and CITO is a great tradition. I’m a Muggle, but I promise I won’t damage or remove any caches!
Great shot of SPB. Interesting looking trails. Last time I was at the zoo, me and hubby drove around looking for the Oxley Center. Finally found it. Those roads sure need some potholes fixed don’t they. One of these days I will have to go out on one of those trails.
@Kathy – Some of the back roads are very remote. I’m surprised they don’t find bodies back there.
@Sandy – Yep I’m a nerd adventurer.
This is really adventerous !!Nice post @@
