The Turkey Vultures of Cathedral Mountain

Earlier this week I went on business to northwest Oklahoma. On the way back I stopped at Gloss Mountain State Park.

IMG_0117

The big hill at the park is called Cathedral Mountain. I didn’t know that it had such a grand name or I would have taken a picture of it. I didn’t so what you get is this pic from halfway up the hill back down to the parking lot.

The wildflowers were out and putting on a show even though it was overcast.

IMG_0119

Most of the climb actually had stairs. The last fifty feet was kind of hard.

IMG_0120

I went up looking for a geocache which I didn’t find. What I wasn’t expecting was the many birds soaring. The wind was strong on the ground. At the top of the mountain hill it was even stronger. The birds were soaring. The effect was magical as they dipped up and down and all around.

As I walked the length of the mesa I saw more and more birds.

IMG_0127

I was surprised when about 50 feet in front of me two full grown turkey vultures came out of the hole in cliff, took a look at me and took off.

IMG_0126

There was a teenager, about half the size of the adults,  looking at me with scorn before he took off.

IMG_0128

I got close to the end of the mesa. About a mile walk and I could see Lone Mountain across the way.

IMG_0138

The mesa narrowed in spots to where it felt like I was on a sidewalk in the sky.

IMG_0141

The whole time I had an escort. I guess they were waiting to see if I fell off the cliff or got bit by a snake or something.

IMG_0136

You could see forever at the end. That spot of water in the distance is the historic Cimarron River.

The vultures stayed with me the whole way. Nothing gets your head on straight than being shadowed by vultures.
Camera Critters

ps: In researching this post I came across a Tulsa Wedding Photographer who did a photo shoot of a model in a wedding dress on top of Cathedral Mountain Hill. Some outstanding photos.

Lake Pretty Water

IMG_6157

Saturday was a big day for son, SuperPizzaBoy. He went running with me, in the morning and then his Improv comedy class. He is with the teenagers this year, they bring they A game to class so SPB has to step up.

IMG_6151

Then we decided to go fishing. We hadn’t been fishing for years. So after a late lunch, we packed up our rods, reels, tacklebox, and cooler and headed to WallyWorld for me to get a license and get a few other odds and ends. (Fishing license in Oklahoma is $25!!!!!)

IMG_6152

We headed up to Lake Pretty Water in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. I love the name and the name fits. It is a beautiful small lake out in the middle of nowhere. Clean, neat, and well cared for.

IMG_6156

We got special licenses to fish here. It was worth it. Come November they stock it with trout. We were fishing for catfish today. We didn’t catch any fish. I think that may by why they call the activity “Fishing” and not “Catching.” Didn’t matter, fishing is a great way of getting my head on straight, and get some relaxation.

I wasn’t the only one who was chilling Saturday.

Our World

Tulsa Airport

IMG_6073

I flew to Houston Friday on business. I have always loved the Tulsa Airport. It was built back in the early 1960’s and is very sleek with lots of glass, exposed steel steel, and gleaming highly polished floors. The whole structure has a very light and airy feeling to it.

More of Botanica, the Gardens of Wichita

IMG_6648
(I know that I’m not supposed to photograph an even number of anything, but which of these would you cut out?) (It’s a rhetorical question, ok?)

I visited Botanica in Wichita, Kansas last week. It’s a great botanical garden.

IMG_6647

It’s got flower of course, trees, shrubs, lots of volunteers, shady spots, sunny spots.

IMG_6644

It was kind of quiet on a weekday, with school starting and everything.

IMG_6641
(Gaillardia, “Punch Bowl”, I always thought Gaillardia was a bad tropical disease.)

I love the flowers, I only noted a couple though. As I’ve said previously I can hardly tell a rose from an iris. Yes, I know, that is bad of me.

IMG_6632

Lots of sculptures both contemporary and domestic in mood and more formal.

IMG_6626

It had the most high tech sundial I’ve ever seen, placed in a well shaded spot of course.

IMG_6624

IMG_6613

It had lots of water features. That was appreciated on a day when it was well over 100F.

IMG_6554

I loved the statues scattered through the gardens.

IMG_6553

Their new children’s garden has been open only a month. It is made for kids to climb, sit, stand, touch, feel, all that stuff. Everything except run. Why is that nobody wants kids to run anymore?

IMG_6579

It was fun. I talked to one of the volunteers, they miss the kids since school started. They love having the kids.

IMG_6573

Its very colorful and educational. They have little boxes with books that explain lots of things if the kids are interested at all.

Check out Botanica if you are ever in Wichita, Kansas.

Check out the new Our World meme. Thanks Sandy and Sylvia for starting it.
