Hacktivist Schmucks

We had a protest going here in Tulsa early this week.

Hacktivist Protest?

We had these guys on a street corner in downtown Tulsa. I asked them what the deal is and they said that the individual named on the sheet was guilty of embezzlement. He’s a city counselor and I googled him and could find no mention of anything remotely illegal or unethical or anything else.

Couple that with a slogan written on a white board at work in a seldom used conference room:

“We are Anonymous.

We are Legion. We do not forgive.

We do not forget.

Expect us”

So this intrigued me. The slogan and the Guy Fawkes masks are associated with a group called Anonymous. They are called Hacktivists because they use the internet as an alternate form of protest.

November fifth, the day I took the pic was the day of the Million Mask March when all the members were supposed to get their masks on and go public. Ironically it was the day after the elections here in the USA and I wonder how many of these guys bothered to vote.

Sorry dudes, I think your anonymous protest accusing without any substantiation somebody with embezzlement is total crap. I guess that you have the right to stand on a corner with your bedsheet sign but do you really want people to take you seriously? And writing kind of halfway threatening  messages on whiteboards? Creepy! It reminds me of people who put religious tracts in the stalls of restrooms.

So what do you think? Do you know any hacktivists? Are you a hacktivist?

Arts Against the Odds – Protest and Performance

Hey! Look who was downtown today  at City Hall!

Heather and Logan were not alone. There was a bunch of kids there enthusiastically exercising their right of free speech. They were spirited and loud and very enthusiastic and very polite. I loved it.

Their parents were there and they were getting into it also. It was a great vibe going on. They were there because there was a city council meeting tonight to discuss the Mayor’s proposed budget that involves closing the theater. Found out all about it here.

(Of course some of us more cynical people are wondering why we are just rocking along and then all the sudden we need to cut about 200 jobs to balance the budget.)

And so what do you think happened after the rally? Well I’ll tell you what theater kids do, they perform. Many of the protestors hurried on down to Henthorne Performing Arts Center for a recital.

Some of the kids did various improv skits. They were great and they were funny, of course.

Logan wasn’t in the improv part of the recital he recited a monologue that he had been working on for some time.

All the kids did great, get up there and take a bow guys! We are proud of all of you!

Blog Action Day – Human Rights – The Right to Protest

October 13 is Blog Action Day, a yearly event hosted by Envato where bloggers if they choose, join in on a particular topic. This year’s topic is Human Rights and they are partnering with Amnesty International. There are human rights issues all over the world and I guess that I could write about them but I have nothing new to add to the discussion. I am much more comfortable posting about things that I’ve seen myself. My Human Rights topic is the right to protest that we have in America.

Whether we are protesting unfair labor practices, or those who hurt children, or perhaps you don’t want Keystone XL pipeline built, or perhaps you do, or you don’t like our country’s taxation and spending policies, or maybe you think that Wall Street dominates our life too much it is amazing to me how much protesting is done in my home town of Tulsa. The buckle of the Bible belt, a very conservative community where the current big civic controversy is a green waste pickup program that has gone awry somehow.

In many other countries the powers that be don’t like protest or free speech. If they want you to have an opinion, they’ll give one as the saying goes. Some countries will put you in jail. Some might even kill you.

The problem here is not that we don’t have freedom of protest its that we take it for granted. I’ve heard people tell me that protests shouldn’t be allowed. Especially things like union picketing, or environmental activism, or other not very nice topics.

Some such people tell me, well yeah they should have free speech but that is more like writing letters to the editor and such. Not out in public rubbing it in our faces.

So yes, I am concerned about abuses in Syria and Egypt but I am also worried about Americans losing their rights, or trivializing their rights, or morphing our rights into something altogether different. For example it looks like the US Supreme Court may eliminate political contribution limits in the name of Free Speech. Uh?

People have the right to stand up and be counted.

Occupy Tulsa Tilt Shift 2

They are making an appeal to not only the courts, or the police, the legislature, mayor, governor, and president, they making an appeal to you.

Occupy Tulsa Tilt Shift 1

Ignore them, or talk to them, read their signs or not. But let them have their say.

By letting them exercise their rights, you are protecting your rights.

Occupy Tulsa

IMG_7223

I went out at lunch today to check out the Occupy Tulsa site at 6th and Boston today.

IMG_7227

There wasn’t a whole lot going on. If there was ever a peaceable assembly of people this would be it. There were more tents than people.

IMG_7226

Shoot, there were more spectators than participants.

IMG_7222

Their campsite looked more like geocaching campout site than a protest. It was neat and orderly, no litter around, everything put away. The tents were put up properly, they had to be since the wind had 28 mph gusts. Overall they do a neater job than most Boy Scout camps I’ve been around.

Signs, Signs

Followup – Apparently Nine Protesters were arrested early (around 2 am) this morning by Tulsa Police. The Police used pepper spray on some of the people they arrested.
