The Spies of Warsaw

Just finished “The Spies of Warsaw” the first book I’ve ever read written by Alan Furst. The book is set in Poland in 1937. It concerns French Spies trying to find information about German armaments and plans for the invasion of France.

I don’t generally like historical fiction like this. I mean we know that the Germans kicked the French’s butt early on. This book though held my interest. It has a lot of plot turns, bad guys who get done in, romance, intrigue and not very many plot holes.

I give this ***1/2. I’ll be looking for other books by Mr. Furst.

Sorry!

Last night was game night at the Yogi house. Not video games although we did play some of that. We played an old fashioned board game. Not techno at all but lots of fun. We played Sorry, the three of us did. It was great except it turned out to be two against one. I was the one. That made it not fair.

I knew that something was up when the other two players were doing some sort of pregame ritual. When I asked them what they were doing, I was told “nothing.” I knew that things were going to be bad for me.

The game is kind of fun for double crossers like me so the first opportunity I got to submarine SuperPizzaBoy I did. Below is his “going to get revenge” face. And he did, I came in third so I had to get my stabs in early. They got theirs in late.

Mrs. Yogi, first, SPB second, yours truly, third.

Go to bed kid!

Tax Holiday

Oklahoma has their tax holiday this weekend. Clothes and shoes under $100 per item are sales tax free. They started last year I think in response to the Texas sales tax holiday. I think that it is a great idea.

SuperPizzaBoy spent the night with his buddy “Q.” So Sweetie and I got to stay up late last night. We played video games. This morning we got up, drank coffee, read the paper, and went to Panera to eat breakfast and drink more coffee. Fortified thus, we went shopping.

I love to go clothes shopping, for me. I love the different colors that are popular now. I want to have two of everything. Dragging along with somebody else while they do their shopping is absolute torture. I know that is selfish. I know it but cannot help it.

First to Kohls. I had a $50 Kohls gift card from Christmas and it was burning a hole in my pocket. I love Kohl’s. All sorts of cheap goods made with Chinese slave labor. Shirts, slacks, wallet, belt. The whole deal.

Next to Belks. Belks is my new love. They carry a wide variety of Columbia stuff. You can look into the site if you are wondering what to do in Columbia. I love their colored fishing shirts, so I got another one. It is kind of an orange sherbet color. Green twill shorts, more shirts, slacks. I got a nice hat to wear at work when I walk around at lunch downtown.

Home, put everything in the closet. Sweetie and each have our own closet. Plus I take up the extra bedroom closet. I swap my clothes with the seasons.

Mama Mia!

We had a sitter for SuperPizzaBoy. Sweeitie and I were going to go bike riding on the river but it was hot and I had already run 5 miles yesterday morning so we decided to cool off at the movies.

First, we were not hungry so we went to Starbucks for some cool drinks. She had a Frapaccino (aka “toxic waste with sugar”) and I had one of their new smoothies. It was chocolate but they had it mixed up with some stuff like protein powder. It tasted ok but I prefer to separate my junk food and healthy food. Mixing these two basic food groups messes up the flavor of the junk food, and is yet not all that healthy. But, hey, I drank it.

We went to see Mama Mia. I’ll make the obligatory comment that it is not as good as the musical. Nothing ever is, is the big secret.

That aside I liked the movie better than what the reviews led me to expect. It was entertaining. I recommend it to anyone.

3/4 of the way through the meeting Sweetie got her regular call from SPB. She let it go to voicemail. He calls her to say that he is worried about her and misses her and wants her to come home. It is kind of sweet, but he really is anxious. We play along, no use making a big deal out of it and at least he is learning to use hte phone.

Sweetie, spys and a friend of hers, we chat a little bit and go home and put the little guy to bed. Then we have snack for dinner.

Another marital date dow!
