Frustration!!!

Falling on a rock

Three weeks ago I banged my knee falling on a rock during a Trail Race on Turkey Mountain. I walked and ran about three and a half more miles and of course my knee was pretty sore.  I went to the doctor a few days later and based on his examination and xrays I didn’t have any bad damage. Gave me some Naproxen and told me to stay off of it for a while. Well, things got better and better until Thursday afternoon when my knee quickly went out. It hurt and was stiff. I cancelled my plans to go to Idaho to help my Dad get his house ready for winter and instead went to see a Nurse Practitioner  (cuz you know, the old doctor was not available on such short notice and my regular doctor just left on two weeks vacation.) The NP said that I did too much too soon and to take it easy and see my regular doc when he gets back.  Huh?

For some reason I love this sculpture in downtown Edmond, Oklahoma

I guess maybe I had been doing too much. I don’t know. My knee felt pretty good so I worked out once (no running). I drove out to western Oklahoma for a company luncheon and then traipsed around downtown Edmond taking photos and visiting customers.

Downtown Tulsa High Rises

I resumed my walks downtown taking pics and posting them on Instagram.

Lafortune Park Geocaching Sky

I even went to a local park and found a geocache. Don’t tell Heather that to get the cache I had to climb up and down a ten foot steel lattice, twice.

Sand Springs Geocaching

I even went out to the suburb of Sand Springs and walked about three miles finding a couple geocaches in the woods. (Don’t tell her about that either.)

So maybe I have been overdoing it. But my knee felt great while I was doing it.

What do you think? Was I overdoing it? Or do I need another doctor?

Hey, my bloody sock cleaned out really nice. I love those Thorlo running socks.

Believe me, you don’t want to push that knee too far or you’ll pay for it the hard way — I know because I did just that some years ago and my knees are still pretty junky!! So, take care and have a great weekend anyway — just be nice to your knee!!

Ummmm….take it from one who is laid up with a foot problem right now because I love to walk and find it hard not to even when I know I shouldn’t and pay the price, all the flipping time lately, don’t overdo it until you have had a chance to heal and strengthen that knee. Easier said than done right? I enjoyed your photos. The bloody one I just said ouch 🙁

Sometimes doctors are like politicians, they say something but don’t define what they mean. I’m sure that long walks and climbing steel lattice fall into the “over doing it” category from the doctor’s viewpoint. Stay calm and cache on, but don’t over do it. Have a blessed week-end.

i guess every one needs their battle scars … right? the hubby always has a ton after working on our cars, & i always say why not wear gloves … he laughs … i guess he thinks he is too manly or something to wear some gloves? men are silly. but i guess women are too. ha. ha!!! ( :

You know, I wonder if you strained a tendon. My son had this knee problem a couple years ago (he’s a runner), and it just wouldn’t get better. He finally went to an ortho who diagnosed what was wrong and told him if he didn’t stop overdoing, the knee would remain inflamed. It seemed to take months for it to heal. Of course, he couldn’t stay off of it because of his work, but he did stop running at least. Don’t take too much Ibuprofen – bad for the heart. I might tell Heather if you don’t rest. Plus, a second opinion never hurts. (Unless the Doc says surgery…)

I’ve learned that seeing a NP is pretty useless unless you have something easy to diagnose such as a cold or a sore throat, nothing against the profession though. I think you may have overdone it. Hopefully you’ll sit back and relax and go to your physical therapy appointments so you can heal. It’s no fun, I know.
