Saturday morning almost a hundred people showed up at Turkey Mountain for a cleanup day.
It was organized by the Tulsa River Parks Authority and sponsored by Hammerhead Bicycles and Tatur Racing. Anytime you can get the mountain bikers and the trail runners working together it has to be important.
Lots of trash was picked up along with old worn out grills, a camo recliner and couch, and several mattresses. Four meth labs were found.
An extremely rare photo of Yogi actually doing anything. I stole this photo from Trail Zombie’s facebook page. If he sues me, I’m going to depend on you to contribute to my legal defense fund. Sweetie is going to think this was photoshopped. Trail Zombie reported on the cleanup on his blog.
Several of us went to an active campsite to dismantle it and haul it off. In addition to the tent, tarp, sleeping bags, and other stuff, we filled up two or three contractor size garbage bags with the garbage strewn in all directions around the site. By the time we left there was no trace that anybody had ever been there. Before you start crying tears over the lost home of whoever I’ll just say the contents of the tent might have indicated that he was up to nothing good.
We loaded it all up on a wagon we had and hauled it off.
There is still a lot of work left for the next clean up day. This is a non active homeless camp with garbage spread in all directions.
Gosh – glad the guy didn’t come back when you were wheeling his things away! We had a homeless killing here in Breckenridge – one guy killed another in the woods just down the ridge from my house. I’ve walked by several camps, and they are all garbage-strewn. I don’t think cleaning up is a priority for them. (Unfortunately)
How fabulous to get that many people out for this event. (You are working real hard there!)
It is so sad to find so much stuff like that in so many — if not all parks these days. Great to see all of your working together to clean it up! Great shots for the day!!
An amazing about of trash cleaned from this area. One meth lab? That can be dangerous even to clean up, but good that it’s gone. Congratulations on a good job done.
Isn’t it amazing what you find. This reminds me of geocaching near the beach and finding an entire toilet, seat and all. Who puts that in the woods?
I love the idea of the cleanup and great that so many people showed up to pitch in. A little worried about the homeless person(s). And meth labs is just plain scary.
Looks like a lot of work!
In the spring, thousands of volunteers pick up rubbish and gravel by the side of the roads over here.
Good job! I think I see you breaking out in a sweat. You guys are sure brave to go out there to clean up meth labs. Lab owners are not known to be friendly.
Well done you and your fellow cleaner-uperers. Why do people fly tip in the most lovely of places? I have to confess I would have felt the need to be fumigated if I had helped carry that mattress!!! I’m sure Sweetie, along with the rest of us, is impressed by your hard work.
There are many such encampments – with corresponding unlawful activity on Albany Point, often seen in the photos «Louis» takes from his balcony.
I wish there were MORE like you and your group!!! Each and every day.
YAY! I applaud your efforts! Cleanup days are so important to the environment and it looks like you had tons of helpers. Humans can be such slobs. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all cleaned up after ourselves so we didn’t need to hold cleanup days?
You’re a brave man getting out there to clean all that stuff up and actually touching an old mattress. Those of us who like to enjoy public spaces, thank you for your service. I saw on Facebook that you got a snuggie in exchange for your work. That is totally worth it!
Did you guys clean the meth labs up yourselves or did you call the fire department? How does that work? Sounds dangerous.
I love that you all did this!
