Used to be that what dominated the sky in western Oklahoma were grain elevators like this one in the town of Geary.
The farmers are still growing lots of wheat in Oklahoma but they have also leased their minerals to the natural gas producers who have brought new features to the landscape.
Late afternoon, Canadian County, Oklahoma, drilling rigs trying to tap the Cana Woodford Shale formation for natural gas.
Skywatch Friday
The hungry quest for energy goes on,
nice sky shots.
Not very pretty .. function vs form I guess.. and I bet many NYers think water towers arent pretty
This is a very Okie post! This is what we see all the way through to the panhandle when we drive to Colorado. And out in Texas by my grandparents’ farm.
You do know it’s Thursday, right? 😉
Very typical skyscape for people who have traveled through your area… we need the energy.
Good photos, interesting text. At one time I had inlaws in Enid which has some giant grain elevators. The land around there is so flat that you can see the elevators from 50 miles away. You think you are almost there then you drive on and on.
Looks just like where I grew up in west Texas — drilling rigs as far as you could see in any direction. I think they were supposed to take the place of trees because we surely didn’t have any of those!! Ah, I do so love Washington and the Northwest!!

Not sure which is more unsightly, no offense.
Those silos were so common at one time!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
The skies in my part of the world are punctuated with high rises. I guess the difference is they were here when i arrived, so I haven’t had to adjust to their presence. I’m thinking the grain elevators and drilling rigs are no worse than high rises, but somehow, I imagine they are disturbing to those who crave open sky.
Very interesting structures reaching for the sky. 🙂 I remember similar grain elevators in Galveston, TX, and how they smelled.
Terrific subjects.
Sydney – City and Suburbs
I know this won’t come as a surprise, but grain elevators are another one of my fascinations and they are often the playground for graffiti artists. =) Cool post!
Magnificent shot of that grain tower in the first photo!
Both are cool shots!

What the Frack?? LoL.. Always enjoy your posts
Yep, the times they are a-changing!
I guess we do need the energy but do they have to be so ugly. Have a Happy Memorial Day weekend!
That is a fine juxtaposition you’ve created with the old and new.
There is an American painter who painted a lot of grain elevators in the landscape but right now his name won’t come to me…
Thanks for visiting and your always thoughtful comments. 🙂
