Okie Blog Awards Nominees

(Photo from flickr) by david.nikonvscanon

The nominees for the 2009 Okie Blog Awards have been posted here. There are 24 categories with 10 nominated blogs in each category, all of them Oklahoma based. I have made a quick survey in about 5 categories and I am very impressed with the quality of the nominated blogs. Oklahoma has a very vibrant and active blogging community and it shows.

If you are an Oklahoma Blogger then you are eligible to vote. Check the link for how to go about casting your vote. If you are at a loss on a blog in the “Family Blog” category I would appreciate your vote for this blog in that category.

Voting ends midnight on Valentines Day so get your entries in early.

Jen of jenX67 volunteered to be in charge of the contest this year and has worked very hard on this year’s event. Her blog is not eligible for any of the awards  but click on over there anyway and say hello.

Okie Blog Awards

If you are an Oklahoma Blogger please consider taking a look at the Okie Blog Awards. It is an annual contest that tries to find the best Oklahoma Bloggers in a broad array of categories. The great thing is that Oklahoma Bloggers submit the nominations for Oklahoma Blogs and Oklahoma Bloggers vote on the blgs nominated. This year there is a process to minimize the “gaming” that sometimes goes on in blog contests.

First it is a great way to let people know about blogs you find interesting and second you can find out about other blogs in the state that you may not know about.

Submitting nominations is very easily done by email. Check out the link above for the details but don’t delay. The deadline is February 3.

Blogs I’d fight Zombie Chickens to Read

Kathy, of the Oklahoma Booklady was kind enough to award me the Zombie Chicken Award. Isn’t she nice. Yes, she is, I can say that even though I’ve never met her plus her blog is tops. She blogs about books and reading but she is also a great photographer and joins in several interesting meme’s. She has always got something new cooking so hers is a never miss blog

The Zombie Chicken award is described thus:

The blogger who receives this award believes in the Tao of the zombie chicken – excellence, grace and persistence in all situations, even in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. These amazing bloggers regularly produce content so remarkable that their readers would brave a raving pack of zombie chickens just to be able to read their inspiring words. As a recipient of this world-renowned award, you now have the task of passing it on to at least 5 other worthy bloggers. Do not risk the wrath of the zombie chickens by choosing unwisely or not choosing at all…”

So I thought long and hard and I’m passing this award on to: (drum roll please)

Michelle of The Froggy Bottom Blog. Michelle blogs about all sorts of different things mostly involving her family. She is also a very talented photographer who take great canded photographs. She is also very encouraging to others and makes lots and lots and lots of comments.

Dawn of Dawn’s Diversion. Dawn has a heart as big as Oklahoma and it shows on her blog. She is a community builder extraordinaire including bringing virtual friends together live and in person through her “hoedowns” (her terminology). She has a great sense of humor and over communicates. She has a blog, she is on facebook, she sends emails. She is a great photographer, especially of children. She is very encouraging and she is a great commenter. I learned from her and I almost always comment on a blog. She has a great sense of humor and can take a joke as well as dish it out.

Sarah of Brit Gal’ in the USA. Sarah is a British Expatriate living in northwest Oklahoma with “Hubster.” She is a talented writer and has a lot to say about life in Oklahoma, her former life in England, and differences between the US and Great Britain. She is a great photographer and very very honest. She is also very encouraging and offers up ideas. She is the one who suggested I try the Skywatch Friday and My World Tuesday memes. Also, she and hubster are a geocaching team and have already hid three. She make lots of comments.

Georgie of Decisionally Challenged. Georgie has the wildest blog on my roll. I never know what she is going to do and don’t hardly ever miss a post. When I first started reading her, it was like, my word, where does she get this stuff? She is very creative and very funny. She also puts herself out there. She is encouraging and makes lots and lots of comments. She was out recently with a bad back back and I missed her terribly. Don’t miss her confessional booth. I am not talking so much about the comments themeselves from some awfully hurting people who need our prayers but Georgies compassion for people.

Baloney of That’s Baloney. Baloney was the first blog I ever read and days she doesn’t post are missing something. If good ole Al Gore had not invented the internet for us and blogging was done by writing on used toilet paper hanging from trees I’d be looking for Baloney’s tree to see what she was posting that day. She is very out there with herself and has a great sense of humor. She can pierce the most inflated and resistant egos with a well placed punctuation mark. She has an eye for bad pictures. She is a talented writer who can express great emotion and feeling. She makes lots and lots of comments also. (Detecting a common thread here?) Advice if you ever run into Baloney. She always has her camera and no picture is taboo so maintain proper decorum at all times.

Jill of Jill of all Trades. I like Jill’s blog because she puts her life out there. She doesn’t crack jokes or do exposes, she just writes about her life. I find her posts compelling, fresh, and honest. I don’t ever miss them and they are always interesting whether she is talking about jury duty, remodeling, a few days in the cabin, or whatever.

Ok Awardees, you have your homework now.

Full of Baloney

Baloney is at it again. Fired up photoshop to lampoon somebody. This time it was me. I am so honored. She doesn’t do it to just anybody just those who are special. Her post really did make my day.

I am stealing the image she made for her post to use on my profile for a little while. I’m probably violating some sort of copyright and she’ll probably sue me for everything I have including my GPS and then where will I be?

Baloney was my inspiration to start blogging and her blog is still my favorite among a bunch of outstanding blogs that I follow. Don’t let her online persona fool you. She is very sweet. I refer to her blog as a “blogging ministry.”

Now, I’ll have to figure out how to, as SuperPizzaBoy puts it, “get my revenge.”

Yogi Needs …

I’ve been tagged by Baloney to participate in the “Needs” game. Its simple you type “ needs” in the Google search box and see what the first ten items are.

So here’s mine,

1. Yogi needs to do a few yoga poses in the most unlikely of places. ( Yogi needs to learn Yoga first maybe.)
2. Yogi needs to live a disciplined life. (No I don’t)
3. Yogi needs a home for 4 days. (Till Sweetie calms down maybe?)
4. Yogi needs a fenced-in yard due to his lack of sight. (Yep, and I’m not housebroken either.)
5. Yogi needs to get started on the path to a healthy, happy life. (Yes, instead of the path to ruin, destruction, and despair that I’m currently on.)
6. Yogi needs to understand that we do not have to be DOING things all the time. (I already understand that, I’m very good at not doing things.)
7. Yogi needs only one word. (hmmm….. I got it “Beer”)
8. Yogi needs a pair. (I totally agree.)
9. Yogi needs to properly align the body and stack the Spinal. (uhhhh … I’m going to click on that link.)
10. Yogi needs a live action movie (I wonder if there is movie that shows how to stack spinals.)

I tried using my real name also but I like the results using Yogi better.

I’m supposed to tag several people but I’m not. If you are reading this and want to participate go ahead! Give us a link in the comments so we can see what yours are

Honest Scrap Award

I am very derelict in acknowledging receipt of an award. Way back in January Dawn of Dawn’s Diversions awarded me the “Honest Scrap” Award. I’m very proud of it. I apologize to her for not acknowledging it sooner.

The award has requirements for the awardee. First I need to say seven things about myself and then I need to award it to other blogs.

So here goes.

1. I like beer. Give me a porter, india pale ale, wheat beer, stout, nut brown ale. I like them all. I especially like brew pub beers. One of the highlights of my life is two weeks I spent in Great Britain years ago. I loved the pubs and two, three, or four pints of bitters.

2. I love coffee. Starbucks brew is OK. My favorite coffee joints here in Tulsa are Double Shot Coffee on Boston near 21st street and Topeca downtown in the old Mayo Hotel building. At these places I’ll get an Americano at those places. There are other places in town that I haven’t tried. Let me know about them!

3. Guess what, you will never guess. I love geocaching. I manage to work a cache in no matter what I do. Check out the very bottom of my blog page for some very detailed statistics. Its not about the numbers though. No not at all. I don’t really hardly pay any attention to them at all, really.

4. I am a nerd. At one time in my life I was headed toward hard core nerddom. I worked on a research project in college on rockets. I presented a paper at the Air Force Academy on a study of optimum time delay between staging for multistage rockets.

5. Sweetie and I fight over her Southern Living magazine. I think she hides it from me until she gets to read it. It is so cozy and comfortable I cannot hardly stand it.

6. I love being outside. I have to be outside for at least a little bit every day or things do not go well for me at all. It grounds me.

7. My guilty pleasure is zoning out. I zone out while running. Its like a meditation or a prayer to me and goes really fast. I can zone out in almost any situation. I had a root canal years ago. I zoned out almost the whole time. I mean I was aware of the whole thing but it was in one room and I was in another room. My dentist still tells me on occasion that he had never seen anybody so relaxed during the procedure.

Now, where does it go from here. Here are the people I’m awarding this to:

Baloney of That’s Baloney – Baloney has the ability to make a flat tire entertaining. Takes very entertaining, and sometimes compromising, pictures.

Kathy of Oklahoma Book Lady – Kathy can write about all sorts of stuff besides books. She has a very good eye at photography.

Michelle of the Froggy Bottom Blog – Wide ranging blog on her family. Very good at photography.

Award

Becky from Operation Read Bible awarded this blog the “Your Blog Is Fabulous” award. I was thrilled. I’m also embarassed because she gave it to me two weeks ago and I haven’t passed it on yet. Recipients are supposed to write five things that you are addicted to and then pass it on to five other blogs.

I love Becky’s blog. She is an awesome reader and book reviewer. I wanted to do a bible reading challenge but I didn’t want to do it in a year. Her bible reading challenge is much more flexible in the schedule. I’m going to get the Bible read, just not in a year.

My addictions

1. Geocaching, as my few readers know. I love looking for, finding, and hiding geocaches. If you don’t what it is check here. Lately I’ve been evangelizing and winning converts.

2. Blogging. I love writing them and reading them. I think blogging is wonderful.

3. Reading. I read all sorts of stuff. Fiction, non-fiction, magazines, cereal boxes, web sites. I love it all.

4. Coffee – I drink it by the gallon. I love it.

5. Dallas Cowboys – What can I say. I’m hopeless, they are hopeless either. Moving into a billion dollar stadium next season. What up?

Now, I get to pass the award on to five other people.

1. Bobbie and Julie of Friends of Bobbie Armour. A more courageous couple you will never find.

2. Kathy of Oklahoma Book Lady. She is the book lady and the photography lady to and is very generous with her comments.

3. Nick’s Law & Autism Legislation in Oklahoma – I don’t think the author cares about awards, but he cares by our kids.

4. Dana of Dana of Oz– US expatriate living and working in Australia. She hasn’t posted in two months but she is one of my three smartest and best looking nieces. If this looks like nepotism, it is. I am very proud of all three of my nieces, Dana, Mary, and Jillian but Dana is the only one with a blog.

5. OkLawStudent of Dysfunctional Didactics . I have no idea what a Didactic is but I love this offbeat blog.

I Figured it Out – All by Myself

I have been so jealous of Georgie of Decisionally Challenged. Not only does her blog rock, she has those cool heart symbols framing her name.

I had been pondering that. Not because I want hearts but because I wanted to know how to do it.

I finally figured it out, all by myself.

So I am experimenting with it. I will never come up with anything as cool as Georgie’s symbols and I probably will probably drop the symbol I’m using as soon as everybody gets through laughing and lampooning about it.

Georgie, I hope you don’t mind. This is just a phase I’m going through.

2008 Okie Blog Awards

I had a pleasant unexpected surprise this morning. I found out that my blog was nominated for the best culture blog for the 2008 Okie Blog Awards. I’m very flattered and appreciative and if any of my readers want to vote for this blog I thank them. The polls close on February 7.

Just click on the logo aboved to go to the link with the nomination list, the rules, and the procedure.

Some of the other nominees are on my blogroll and I recommend them highly. I haven’t had a chance yet to go through the rest of the nominees on the list but I am looking forward to doing so. I expect quite a few will end up on my blogroll. I’m always looking for new blogs to read and just looking at the list there are quite a few that I don’t know.

Thank you very much again too those who voted to put me on the list.
