My World – Washington Irving Park – Bixby, Oklahoma

Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” took and extended trip to the West including parts of what is now Oklahoma way back when. He and his party camped on the Arkansas River near what is now called Washington Irving Park in Bixby, Oklahoma. It is not used very much and its a great place to walk the dogs and let SuperPizzaBoy ride his Triton, a three wheeled self propelled vehicle.

Very nice trails for exploring.

I loved the snaky shadows of the trees.

An Amphitheater built by the local Rotary Club. In the shadows is a seated statue of Washington Irving. He has a very long suffering look on his face.

SPB and the dogs having a little talk with Mr. Irving.

A great time was had by all. But there is an opportunity for reflection for the outside world.

The park has a memorial to those who perished in the World Trade Center attack. The memorial includes an ibeam from one of the buildings.

Oh, what a fun and interesting post for the day, Yogi!! Love the park and the bare trees against the sky! The shot of SPB and the doggies having a chat with Mr. Irving is priceless. And the memorial to 9/11 is very moving! Just seeing that beam even after all this time made me shiver! Love all your photos! Have a great week!

What a fun place to visit! The picture of the dogs tied to Mr. Irving’s arm cracked me up, and I love SPB’s Triton.
It’s very moving to see the ibeam from the World Trade Center.

    Another informative post, Yogi.
When I read about people comming west before the era of railroads I am amazed. We assume a comfortable, fast journey but back then it slow and difficult. Even in 1880 wnen my 80 year old great-great-grandmother traveled from Boston to Chicago, it must have been quite and ordeal.

Interesting that Washington Irving ventured out to what was then the Wild West, way back when.
Looks like a beautiful park and great place for SPB and the dogs to get some exercise.

Wow–never even knew of that place! How could I NOT know about it? Oh yeah, I live in mid-town. But I’m willing to go south of the border (I-44) to go there. Looks totally amazing. We’re there. Maybe this weekend. Thanks for the info!
