Vacation Critters – Gulf Shore Birds of Alabama

We’ve been gone for a couple weeks on a family vacation to Orange Beach, Alabama. We love it there. We sit on the beach a lot and typically do a daily walk of two or three miles. I saw lots of shore birds there many of which I found hard to ID. Here’s some examples:

DSCF0801

Your garden variety laughing seagull. Please correct any ID that you think is wrong.

DSCF0840

A small colony of seagulls. (I love collective nouns for animals of all different types.)

DSCF0859

A bigger colony of seagulls and other various types of shore birds.

More laughing seagull? Maybe.

A brown pelican lording over other birds.

DSCF0810

A protected sea turtle egg nest. They have always had them in Orange Beach but we saw lots more than years previously. I guess that could mean more sea turtles are nesting or that they are identifying nesting sites that were missed earlier. I don’t know.

DSCF0861

A crab playing possum on the beach. I thought it was dead but when I got too close it took off.

Pelicans on patrol, flying low!

Another patrol!

DSCF0814

Google lens says a Ruddy Turnstone, doesn’t sound right to me.

DSCF0843

Google lens says Sanderlings??? I kind of doubt it.

I have a terrible time with IDs but you sure saw a nice variety of birds. Being on the beach sounds wonderful right now…well, when it gets a little cooler here in FL! lol Fun photos!

    Hello Yogi,
I agree with the Laughing Gulls and I see one Tern.
I love the Brown Pelicans, I agree with the Turnstones and last one I think are juvenile shore birds.
The beach is a great spot to see a variety of birds. Thank you for linking up and sharing your critters! Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

You may call the laughing gull “garden variety,” but I’ve never seen one! Ruddy Turnstones? Never heard of them! The description sounds like your bird, calico with orange legs. Now, the sanderlings? I looked them up, and since they are a kind of sandpiper, I have heard of them! How fun to see so many kinds of birds.
You probably have seen The Big Year movie and all those birds! It’s a fun one, I watch it now and again.

Beautiful gulls. Do they steal sandwiches, snacks and French fries the way our New Jersey shorebirds do. We lost half a sandwich (again) to one this year. It seems we never learn our lesson. Your vacation sounds like our dream vacations. We were lucky enough to spend five days on Sanibel Island in June and can’t wait to go back and relax on the beautiful shell-covered beaches again.
