The Great Backyard Bird Count

This is the weekend for The Great Backyard Bird Count. We participated last year, this year, I pretty much did it by myself. We have too much going on around the house to focus the whole team on the project.

It was kind of boring at the house. Just a bunch of sparrows. I counted about a dozen in fifteen minutes. I think it was a dozen different ones. Just between you and me they all look alike. Now of course there are a bunch of different sparrows, I hadn’t id’d them yet, I’ve learned that id’ing birds is more than matching up photographs.

We went on a family walk around Lafortune Park. I took the opportunity to do another count. It’s not my backyard but hey I’m cheating, turn me in if you want.

I counted close to a hundred Canadian Geese. They are here year round now.

About 15 mallard ducks. Most of them males and some females.

Now you experienced bird counters out there, do the birds have to be awake when you count them?

Also, I didn’t see this one in the regional bird survey. Anybody know what it is?

Also, I didn’t see where to input this specimen. It was actually my favorite.

Hi Yogi, Great post and I love the BIG bird. I think you are allowed to count wherever you want. Whether it is a park or your yard. It wonderful you took the time to help and count. have a great week!

    a CRANE! I get it!!!

So, ducks can sleep standing up? That just seems uncomfortable to me.

Emma got to feed some ducks and geese this weekend. The geese were eating out of her hand. So cute.

I do love Big Bird! And aren’t you the clever one with your capture of “the crane”! He’s got quite a beak there, doesn’t he? You do know that you find and have as much fun as SPB, don’t you? Beautiful ducks, too! Hope you find something else fun to get into this week and that you share it, of course!!

What a silly Billy you are, that big green bird is the greater, stripe-legged hedgewing – we see them on an almost daily basis here in Yorkshire!

Not sure the crane is going to countable. But sure made me smile.

I’ve been trying to count. So far only in my yard through the window.

the nearly extinct hedge bird w/striped legs is a great capture but the photo of the right sided crane is a winner .. I am betting its was hoping it would blend into the trees

You may have trouble if cranes decide to nest on the roof of your house. On the other hand, if the eggs hatch, you could make a fortune selling the babies to builders.
