The Tulsa Historical Society has an exhibit on Jim Halsey, a legendary music industry insider who manages such acts as the Oak Ridge Boys, Clint Black, the Judds, and tons of others. Check the link. I had never heard of him before the exhibit.
Anyway, long before cell phones he traveled with the portable phone above. Supposedly it was the same phone, called the football, as what US Presidents were supposed to have available in case the Russians wanted to talk about something that was bothering them. The Presidents phone was called the football. Now I imagine its all done with cell phones.
Hey ever wondered what a triple platinum record looks like.
There you go.

What an interesting post for the day! The phone is amazing! Hope your week is off to a great start! Enjoy!

I’m just glad cell phones are the size they are now. I remember our first ‘bag’ phone. Not nearly as large as the football but big enough we didn’t want to carry it around much.
We’ve come a long way from a large suitcase phone being convenient and portable.
That’s a huge phone! Cool shots.
Very interesting!
It’s hard to believe that is a portable phone. Amazing how different they look now!
We had an early cell phone, I think they were called “bag phones”. They were big but not this big.
Interesting to learn about the important people behind the scenes. Man, lugging that telephone must have been a job for a couple of people!
We went through that exhibit several weeks ago. I really enjoyed it.
I loved the KAKC exhibit, since that was the radio station of my youth.
Great stuff, Yogi.
Today I tried to explain to my students that when I was a kid my dad was a telephone installer. I had to start with the concept of wire. That it’s a 3-D thing that has weight and takes up space and we needed it to talk to other people.
Great pics.
Been a while since I’ve seen a phone receiver like that!
I;ve never seen a phone that big. I remember the first “portable” or bag phones about 20 years ago. People mostly kept them in their car.
Can you imagine lugging one of those things around? I worked in Radio Shack way back when the first generation mobiles came out, you practically needed a suitcase and a gym membership to manage those too.
