The Gum Story in American Sign Language

Son at his new school had to take a foreign language and he ended up taking American Sign Language. Boy was that a chore. He has worked very hard and so has his mother. We are nearing the end of the year (Yahoo!!) and he had to learn how to do “The Gum Story”. I thought he did pretty good at it (not like I would know) but he agreed to let me film him doing it.

I thought he was going to translate while he did it but he didn’t and he is a one take and done kind of guy. Below is a translation of the Gum Story.

We are proud of Logan of his hard work in the Signing Class and the other courses he has taken this year.

I took two years of Spanish and don’t have much to show for it. What about you? Do you know more than one language?

With my grandson born with Down’s, I learned quite a lot of the sign language before he learned speech..you, I’m sure, are proud of Logan and his choice of learning this.

Great job Logan. I know you’re proud of the effort that he put into this endeavor. I’m not sure that I would have the patience or perseverance to learn any new language at this point. I took Latin in high school and that didn’t go well.

Logan did great – – nice video presentation. That was HARD! I took ASL about 10 years ago in a class at Colorado Mountain College. (Even then, I was the oldest one in the class). There was no speaking in the class – only signing. Our final was to tell a story in sign – I chose to do the Tortoise and the Hare. At the time, a family lived next door to us with an adult son who was deaf and used ASL. Unfortunately, they moved away and that ended my use of the language. If you don’t use a second language, whatever it is, you lose the ability for fluency. As Logan signed, I could sometimes follow, but I definitely had to look at the transcript to read what I was missing. Tell Logan I really enjoyed his presentation!

Not easy to learn any second language, at least not for me. I took two years of Spanish in college and still couldn’t converse well in Mexico. No I can say “I don’t speak _______” in three languages. Logan did great.

I think it’s amazing that he knows how to sign. I’m very impressed. I’ve always wondering if there is one sign language for everyone in the world, or are there different interpretations of it for English, French, Japanese, etc.

I used to know a little Spanish and was pretty good in German, but now I mix the two together and can’t speak either one worth a darn.
