Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Light to Afternoon

It’s time for Scavenger Hunt Sunday hosted by Ashley Sisk.

Something Colorful

IKEA Colors

IKEA is an amazing place for color and all sorts of funky stuff. I’ve never bought anything there but I sure love to take my camera. Good thing they don’t charge admission.

Light

IMG_4300

This is the plaza where I work. It is pretty well lit with all different light sources including several natural gas lights.

You

SUNP0092

Yep that’s me. I have an inexpensive camera that has several interesting special effects built in. My favorite is the “Negative” mode. This is a shadow shot of me, in negative. My regular readers indulge me greatly in this.

In Motion

Roaring Down the Freeway

The same camera I used for the shadow shot doesn’t have a shutter. That’s right, remember that I said that it was inexpensive, so that is one way they saved money on it. The picture button just starts the sensor scanning. So if the object I’m taking a picture of is in motion then the pic will be distorted. This is called the Lartigue effect named after a Frenchman of that name who discovered the effect in the late 19th century.

The Lartigue effect works on a stationary object if you move the camera.

SUNP0064

This is a photograph from the same camera, in negative mode, when I made the camera move back and forth while pressing the button. Simple things for simple minds is what I say.

Afternoon

Afternoon on Arkansas River

I love late afternoons when the sun is still pretty well up but the light is coming in on an angle. This was taken on the east bank of the Arkansas River looking west.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney

Sweetie and I went to see Gravity on Friday. This isn’t much of a review because I don’t know how to tell you about the movie without major spoiling the thing. I will tell you though that George Clooney does a great job but Sandra Bullock…. If Sandra Bullock doesn’t win an Academy Award for her acting in a movie, well then, then, well I don’t know what I’ll do but I’ll be mad.

This is really a great movie. They call it Gravity but it could also be called Survival. I love it. Go see it. Let me know what you think.

I give it five stars out of five.

At the #movies #selfie with Heather

It is 3D! Take a selfie, post it on Instagram. I’m yogiab on Instagram.

Song-ography – “Forever Autumn” by the Moody Blues

Fall Color 2

Forever Autumn by the Moody Blues

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you’re not here

IMG_6400

I WATCH the birds fly south across the Autumn sky
And one by one they DISAPPEAR
I wish that I was flying WITH them
Now you’re not here

Sun and Shadows at Lafortune Park

Like the SUN through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on the breeze you blew away

IMG_6576

Through Autumn’s golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
Cause you’re not here

Like the SUN through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on the breeze you blew away

IMG_3648

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life will be forever Autumn
Cause you’re not here

Our World – Oklahoma Sugar Art Show

The Oklahoma Sugar Art Show was held this past Saturday and Sunday at the Tulsa State Fair. I went for the first time last year and it is now a can’t miss event for me. What the bakers do with the cakes and decorations is amazing.

Sugar Art Show 1

Every year has a theme and this year is was “Ballet.” This cake celebrated Sleeping Beauty. Notice the sleeping beauty at the top of the cake.

Sugar Art Show 2.jpg

It took well over a 100 photographs and I just couln’t figure out what I like the best so I’m just showing a few. There are reportedly close to 700 cakes displayed. It is impossible to study each one.

Sugar Art 3

I think this one was Little Red Riding Hood. Notice the top figure, and then the cabin in the woods, and at the bottom a stage and curtain.

Sugar Art Show 4

They have other categories and I loved this SuperHero cake with references to Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk.

Sugar Art Show 5

I loved this little guy also.

Sugar Art 6

My favorite are the masks. They are pure sugar and very fragile. Last year somebody ran into one of the tables with a powered wheelchair and destroyed a bunch of masks. This year they had some more precautions.

Anyway, the Sugar Art Show is just two days a year.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – The Rule of Thirds and Other Secrets, Carefully Explained

Rule of Thirds

IMG_8473

A lot of people really get all confused about the rule of thirds but it is really very simple. I’ll do my best to explain it to you but you are going to have to focus. Ready?

IMG_0068

The Rule of Thirds is that if the birthday boy blows all his candles out in one breath then he can have thirds. If not, he just gets seconds.

Questions? Class? Class? Anyone??

I found this baby possum all alone on Turkey Mountain one evening when I was running the trails. He was a brave little possum. He didn’t back down.

Song-ography – “Up on the Roof” by James Taylor

Songwriters: King, Carole / Goffin, Gerry
Up on the roof
Carole King (attributed to James Taylor)

IMG_6752
(Our favorite rooftop in the whole world is the Mayo Hotel’s rooftop bar here in Tulsa.)

When this old world starts a getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I’ll climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space

IMG_6745
(It is a great place for people watching. Isn’t skype fun?)

On the roof, it’s peaceful as can be
And there the world below don’t bother me, no, no

So when I come home feeling tired and beat
I’ll go up where the air is fresh and sweet
I’ll get far away from the hustling crowd
And all the rat-race noise down in the street

IMG_6735
(We love the refreshments)

On the roof, that’s the only place I know
Look at the city, baby
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let’s go up on the roof

Rooftop Sunset
(And the views are fantastic)

And at night the stars they put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me
That’s what I said
Keep on telling you

IMG_3199
(They have live music sometimes on weekends)

That right smack dab in the middle of town
I found a paradise that’s troubleproof
And if this old world starts a getting you down
There’s room enough for two
Up on the roof…

Signs, Signs, – Tulsa’s New Librarium

R1-07588-011A
(Pic taken with my Sardina 35mm film camera. Nothing beats film, sorry, no offense)

The Tulsa City County Library just shut down their Central Library for a two year renovation at a cost near $50 million. Now, they don’t have that money in hand but they are hoping that they get it. Personally, the hope method of raising money has never worked out very well for me. But what do I know!

Tulsa's Temporary Central Library for the next two years, former Safeway Store,
(The grocery store closed in the early 90’s. I was witnessed a tug of war in the parking lot between a store employee and a customer pushing and pulling on a roast. Finally the customer gave up and jumped into a getaway care took off. Stuff like that is why they used to call the store the “UnSafeway.”)

To provide downtown users a library, they renovated an old Safeway Grocery store and loaded it full of books, computers, and lots of places to sit. They call it the Librarium.

R1-07588-007A
(I took this pic before I went in the Librarium for the very first time. That is when I found out that there is a long bar along with window with stools for work stations. Everybody was looking at me.)

I think it works very well. It is a large open, well lit, space with a great feel to it. It is a little bit of a walk to it but not bad especially since the weather is turning cooler.

#ipadlounge at #librarium #tulsa
(Don’t ask me how I know but it is impossible to disengage those dang ipads from the mounts. Take my word for it.)

It even has an “Ipod Lounge!” Reader Bill aka “The Tulsa Gentleman” tells me that Leon Russell used to work at this Safeway way back when. (I don’t hear any questions about who Leon Russsell is.)

Anyway I’ll be spending a lot of time at the Librarium for the next two years.
