Midweek Blues – Beach!!
I’m afraid I’ve been burning everybody out on photos from my Seattle trip so here is a photo from last year’s vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama. We had a great time in Seattle but urban vacations although fun are not very restful so we are probably headed to the beach next year. Gulf Shores was great but we like to go different places.
Do you have a recommendation on a good beach vacation destination? We are definitely interested in what you have to say.
Our World – Seattle’s Pike Place Market
If you go to Seattle and you can only do one thing you have to go to the Pike Place Market downtown near the waterfront. Bustling is the word. It is the people watchers place to be. Yep its a tourist place, but if you are tourist, go for it.
Sights and Sounds everywhere. Not just the fish sellers but flower, fruit, vegetable, stands as well. Be sure and take your camera.

Deception Pass Bridge
On our recent whale searching outing while on vacation in Seattle we passed underneath the Deception Pass Bridge. It connects Whidby Island and Fidalgo Island together and was completed in 1935. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It consists of two spans with a total length of 1487 feet and moves about 20,000 cars per day.
The cruise we talk was pretty smooth until we got to Deception Pass. The currents are very turbulent and the ride was a little rough for a few minutes before and after.
The strait is called Deception Pass because for a long time the early European’s thought it led to a small bay and not a passage.

San Juan Whale Watching
About two weeks ago in Seattle we got up very early and clambered onto the Victoria Clipper III and headed off north in search of whales.
The vessel wasn’t very full so we got to spread out a little. Luckily they had lots of coffee on board an free refills.
And the boat could haul a** as we say in Oklahoma. It could have probably pulled a dozen skiers.
We saw all sorts of boats on the way, motor boats, big and small.
And sail boats, most moving with their motors.
And big ole houses right on the water.
And beautiful bridges.
We got to Friday Harbor and spotted this classy yacht, the MV Olympus. It used to be the governor’s personal yacht way back when and the subject of some scandal because of the cost. It is now privately owned and is displayed at classic boat shows. You can charter it if you want. You want to know how much?? Hahaha, well then you can’t afford it as they saying goes.
At Friday Harbor we had lunch. I went geocaching and found my very first Washington geocache. No lie, the photo above was taken at the cache site.
While hunting for whales we saw some spectacular skies.
And some harbor seals. They don’t really like Orca whales, but the whales love the seals.
We saw some deer on a wildlife preserve on an island.
And then finally!!

We would like to have seen some whales but we had a great trip anyway.
We saw some more great scenery on the way back to Seattle.
I never got tired of seeing the Space Needle. Seattle has to have the prettiest skyline of any city I’ve ever visited. (Nope, hadn’t been to Paris, yet.)

What if you could go back in time somehow, would you do it? What about if you could go back and time and change history by preventing an assassination, specifically John F. Kennedy’s murder on November 22, 1963? Would things be better or worse now if you did that? Would the Vietnam War been averted? What if you couldn’t go back to any day you wanted, you had to go back to 1958 and bide your time until 1963?
You know something, five years is a long time to be biding time, and you would have to eat. You couldn’t take your 2012 money back in time, that would raise a few eyebrows wouldn’t it? You would have to get a job to earn some money to eat and have a place to sleep. Of course, you could make some spectacularly successful bets on horses and sports in general.
Five years is a long enough time that you might meet somebody and fall in love. You might like your new life. What then? Would you want to return to the present day?
You might also find out that maybe the past doesn’t want to be changed. It’s obdurate.
This might be Stephen King’s best novel. It’s huge, it takes a while to read. But I loved it.
Five stars out of five.
Ruby Tuesday – Copper Creek Inn
After a long day exploring Mount Ranier National Park last week we descended out of the park into the little town of Ashford, Washington to eat at the Copper Creek Inn. A small roadhouse that really serves good food to the hungry and tired. Sweetie had zeroed in on the blackberry pie while doing research the day before. It was as good as advertised. She ate it before I could take a picture of it.
Plus, being from Oklahoma we are always in continual amazement at how many people actually keep their windows open. Ours in Oklahoma are buttoned up from March to October.
Of course what I liked was the stick alphabet on the outside of the building.
