Scavenger Hunt Sunday – What Are You Comfortable With?

Hat

Red Dress and a Big Floppy Hat

I just love stealing shots from photo shoots. I shot this during a very chilly morning at Tulsa’s Woodward Park. The model had to be freezing. I was cold and I was wearing a coat. I guess you could say that she was suffering for my art.

Antique

IMG_6200

I learned something new about spurs this year. Something my Dad didn’t even know. I found out about “Gal Leg” spurs. They were very popular in the “Old West.” Can you see why they call it Gal Leg? I found this at Frank Phillips (of Phillips 66 Fame) old ranch at Woolaroc.

Something You Are Comfortable With

Hiking Cropped

I am very comfortable with taking off on a trail. Any trail, anywhere. I’ve never gotten lost. I just have to know where it goes.

Who is there?

Camera Showdown

Sometimes the kid has to turn the tables on the bloggerdad.

A Door

IMG_6559

I love these doors at Kansas City’s Union Station. The old train station in the middle of town. I can just imagine the hundreds of thousands of people who went in and out of these doors back in the day.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Getting Natural

Happens Everyday

20101122_14

You know what happens every day? Eating, that’s what. Lucky’s here in Tulsa makes great burgers and those fries. Those fries have truffle oil on them. I don’t share them. Southern Living voted Lucky’s as being one of the great food values in the south. What took them so long? Everybody in Tulsa knew it for years.

Upside Down

R1-02631-013A

I have several film cameras made by Lomography dot com. I love doing double exposures with them. One of my favorite things to do is take a picture and then turn the camera upside down and take another pictures. It’s a crap shoot on the results.

Natural

IMG_3039

Encountered this beauty while hiking in Mount Rainier National Park in Washing. Nothing more natural than a deer.

Man-made

IMG_4395

I found this example of Ozark Okie civil engineering at Natural Falls State Park here in Oklahoma. It barely looks strong enough to support itself but it works.

Looking Down

IMG_4422

This is another shot from Natural Falls State Park looking down to the pool where the Falls drop. The Park is beautiful and generally deserted. Scenes from the movie “Where the Red Fern Grows” where shot there. I have posted previously about the park.

Lights

Heather added some lights to our display this year. I think lights and snow really go together well.

Tree

Who can’t like a pink flamingo Christmas tree like this one a the Philbrook Festival of the Trees from, ah, oh, a couple years ago. Sorry.

Big

Big Red Ornament

Devon Energy in Oklahoma has the perfect ornament for the grounds of their billion dollar headquarters. You don’t find too many ornaments with signs asking that you don’t climb on them.

Makes You Feel Merry

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Where I Stand Edition

Where I Stood

IMG_3882

Hey everybody meet Seven. He is the horse my son rides at his Thereapeutic Horseback Riding lesson every Saturday morning. Seven was donated to the center by a ranch here in Oklahoma. He is a trained cow horse but he has a trot that will “scramble your brains” which is not good for cowboys in the saddle all day.

Silver

I captured this at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City during our Fall break trip in October. Notice I got myself along with Heather and Logan to the left.

Tiny

Teeny-tiny #geocache like a needle in a haystack #tulsa #oklahoma #geocaching

I’m a geocacher, an internet based game (check out geocaching.com) where people hide containers or “caches” out and about in the world and then other people go find them using handheld GPS receivers (“GPSr”). The biggest cache I found was a footlocker in the eleavator penthouse of a New Orleans high rise office building (the owner of the building is a geocacher. He has a security guard take you up to the penthouse so you can go find it). This pictured is the smallest I’ve ever found. Talk about a needle in a haystack especially consider that the accuracy of a GPSr is only about 12 feet under ideal conditions. So if the hider’s GPSr is off by 12 feet and the finder’s is off by the same amount then you have a radius of 24 feet to check. Fun, fun, fun. I have found about 1300 of them over the years and hidden 27.

In the Cupboard

Prepared Pantry

Well instead of Cupboard, how about Pantry. Above is my wife Heather at my cousin’s store in Rigby, Idaho. It is  The Prepared Pantry. They have all sorts of baking mixes that are great. They often have free cooking demonstrations on Saturday where they give out generous samples of the food.

Shadow

I found this shadow at Powell Gardens near Kansas City Missouri back in October.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Tables Are Just a Start!

Table

Ford Mustang Billiard Table

Try as I might I couldn’t get Heather to agree to getting table. I even offerred to get it white wall tires but noooooo, no can do. So there.

I Collect

Teeny-tiny #geocache like a needle in a haystack #tulsa #oklahoma #geocaching

I’m a geocacher. I have found almost 1300 of them in 23 states. I have found them ranging in size from a fraction of inch like above to a footlocker below in the elevator penthouse of a highrise in downtown New Orleans. The owner of the office building is a geocacher. One of the security guys takes you up to the penthouse. I love it.

Large Geocache

Music

IMG_0326

Speaking of music. I don’t think there is any city anywhere that loves music like New Orleans does.

Yes!

DSC_0034

Logan went to a summer camp in Texas last summer. He had a great time. He won some sort of award. I’m ashamed to say that I don’t remember what it was for but he is rocking those cowboy boots. The young people flanking him are camp counselors. I think he was scared to death. He is still bashful around girls, especially pretty ones. That’s okay with his parents, for now.

Someone I Miss

I miss my Mother. She was something else I tell you. She always had that twinkle in her eye.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – All the Way from Dressing Up to Orange

Dress Up

IMG_5321

These two are nephew (son of my niece Mary) Mr. Beans and the World’s Best Brother-in-Law, Irv. The occasion was the marriage of Irv’s daughter Jillian a couple of years ago.  These two are two very sharp dressed men. The young woman in the background it turns out was the wedding photographer, Caitlyn, a friend of my sister, Ellen. The photographer is also a chemical engineer who works on natural gas processing plants just like I used to do, and she lives in Oklahoma. Hopefully she will overcome this unfortunate career choice and avoid becoming a “Crusty Gas Gal.” She is a very talented photographer and a great blogger. If you live in Oklahoma and are in need of a professional photographer check out  caitlynmariephotography.com

Candy

Truffles.jpg

I love truffles and sometimes Heather gives me a box, but I have to share. I don’t mind sharing with her. I probably won’t share with you though. Sorry, that’s the way it is. When you get through crying I will tell you why.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin Turkey

I love pumpkins and decorated pumpkins even more and those decorated by others the most of all.

Spooky

#spooky Turkey Mountain #trails #tulsa #running

I am not a guy who believes in ghosts. However when I go running on Turkey Mountain and it gets a little dark and late it seems spooky to me. It is an urban wilderness area but was quite the oilfield way back when. There was moonshining going on and a deputy sheriff got killed. Lots of history back then. I feel it when I run. It doesn’t scare me. But I do wonder who seems to be chasing me. I run so slow, especially on trails and at night that if it is trying to catch me, it is not working too hard.

Orange

How about an Orange Sky at Orange Beach, Alabama?

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Light to Afternoon

It’s time for Scavenger Hunt Sunday hosted by Ashley Sisk.

Something Colorful

IKEA Colors

IKEA is an amazing place for color and all sorts of funky stuff. I’ve never bought anything there but I sure love to take my camera. Good thing they don’t charge admission.

Light

IMG_4300

This is the plaza where I work. It is pretty well lit with all different light sources including several natural gas lights.

You

SUNP0092

Yep that’s me. I have an inexpensive camera that has several interesting special effects built in. My favorite is the “Negative” mode. This is a shadow shot of me, in negative. My regular readers indulge me greatly in this.

In Motion

Roaring Down the Freeway

The same camera I used for the shadow shot doesn’t have a shutter. That’s right, remember that I said that it was inexpensive, so that is one way they saved money on it. The picture button just starts the sensor scanning. So if the object I’m taking a picture of is in motion then the pic will be distorted. This is called the Lartigue effect named after a Frenchman of that name who discovered the effect in the late 19th century.

The Lartigue effect works on a stationary object if you move the camera.

SUNP0064

This is a photograph from the same camera, in negative mode, when I made the camera move back and forth while pressing the button. Simple things for simple minds is what I say.

Afternoon

Afternoon on Arkansas River

I love late afternoons when the sun is still pretty well up but the light is coming in on an angle. This was taken on the east bank of the Arkansas River looking west.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – The Rule of Thirds and Other Secrets, Carefully Explained

Rule of Thirds

IMG_8473

A lot of people really get all confused about the rule of thirds but it is really very simple. I’ll do my best to explain it to you but you are going to have to focus. Ready?

IMG_0068

The Rule of Thirds is that if the birthday boy blows all his candles out in one breath then he can have thirds. If not, he just gets seconds.

Bake Something Sweet (or just eat something sweet)

Birthday Cake

I am not much of a baker but I’m a heck of an eater. Sweetie made me this Pioneer Woman’s Birthday Cake. I think we need to have a cooking and baking thowdown with Mrs. Drummond. My money is on Sweetie.

Animal

Fawn

I love coming upon deer while I’m out geocaching. I found this little critter in a park in Wichita, Kansas.

Get Artsy

SUNP0036

I’m not much of an artist but I have a collection of cameras including a Yashica FX camera that can shoot in pics in various modes including a “negative” mode. I love it. That is about as artistic as I get.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Body Parts and Mirrors Edition

It’s time for Scavenger Hunt Sunday again, so lets get to it.

Body Part

#snowman #ornament is that really his nose?

Sorry Ashley, I don’t take pictures of my body parts and if I did I wouldn’t put them online and I’m not runnng for office so I’m not going to text the pics, that  I don’t take, to other people anyway. And, I’m not going to take pics of other people’s body parts because most people don’t want their body parts photographed. So you’ll have to be happy with Frosty’s nose, although, I have to tell you it doesn’t exactly look like a nose either and that is all I’m going to say about that!

Wednesday (take a photo on Wednesday – easy enough)

#fromwhereisit #geocaching #running

Well Wednesday is the day I get a kitchen pass to go run after work. Sometimes I sneak in a little geocaching which means that I get a little muddy and dirty. But hey, I wasn’t the one that said Wednesday. Count yourself lucky that you can’t smell me late Wednesday after a five mile run.

Music

IMG_6118

Well we went to Guthrie Green in the Brady District Friday evening, see my last post, and listened to some great Jazz music.

Guess What It Is

Rosy Hands

Sorry, I’m changing this to “Guess How I Did This?” And them I’m going to spoil it for you. I use and love inexpensive film cameras. It drives a few of the people who read my blog nuts, but I do it anyway cuz that’s the way I am. So what I did here was I put my hand up in the sky and blocked the sun from the camera and took a picture. Then without advancing the film I took a picture of a rose bush. So the unexposed area that was my hand when I took a picture of the sun got exposed with the rose bush.  I thought it was a pretty cool trick. Of course, several know it alls told me that they could do the same thing better with Photoshop. And I say good for them. I don’t even have photoshop. I don’t even want it. (Although if somebody gave it to me, I’d take it.)

I guess that I could of used this on the “Body Part” section but I’ve already done that and so you’ll just have to be happy with Frosty’s nose, or whatever it is.

Mirror Image

Tulsa Lofts

Well, I’m cheating here also, and I don’t feel the least bit sorry about it. Here I took an image of a building downtown and then turned the camera upside down and took another pic of the same subject. I know that it is juvenile but I like the result. It’s like a building floating in air.

Here is another one I did of the music stage at Guthrie Green.

Guthrie Green Double Exposure

I love clouds and this pic has clouds everywhere plus the whole disorienting effect. It’s a pain doing double exposures with film cameras because you don’t know what you got until you get the film developed. I have digital cameras and software than can do the same thing electronically but I don’t like it as much as film. I’m a big serendipity fan. I just love experimenting and seeing what happens. Drives my boss crazy at work. Most people are not in the “What the heck lets see what happens” mode. You have to have a little fun though right?

That’s all for this week folks. I know that I have a lot of fun with Scavenger Hunt Sunday but let me tell you it is my favorite because of the creativity involved. The other bloggers that participate are some of the best photographers on the internet and what they do just blows me away.
