I’m afraid I’ve been burning everybody out on photos from my Seattle trip so here is a photo from last year’s vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama. We had a great time in Seattle but urban vacations although fun are not very restful so we are probably headed to the beach next year. Gulf Shores was great but we like to go different places.
Do you have a recommendation on a good beach vacation destination? We are definitely interested in what you have to say.

Weekend Reflections – Gulf Shores
Its that season, we are trying to figure out where to go on vacation this year. This pic is from our vacation last year to the Redneck Riviera of Gulf Shores, Alabama. We had a great time. This year SuperPizzaBoy wants to go to Washington, D.C. Are there any beaches in the D.C. area?
Where are you going (or have already gone) on vacation this year? Do you have any tips for me?

Damn the Torpedos….. Fort Morgan, Alabama
During our recent vacation to Alabama we went to Fort Morgan State Historic Site which guards the entrance to Mobile Bay.
There has been a fort there since before the War of 1812. There is a small information packed information packed museum on site that tells the story. Wikipedia also has information on Fort Morgan. The fort consists of over 40 million bricks most set with slave labor.
The Fort was important in the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and the Spanish American War, and was manned during both World Wars. I. During all that time the the fortifications were added to and modified so it is quite an extensive area.
There are lots of underground chambers that are pretty spooky. If only they could talk.
It was here during the Civil War during the Battle of Mobile Bay that Union Admiral Farragut uttered, “Damn the torpedoes, ull speed ahead!” Torpedoes back then were actually remotely actuated mines. Anyway, it is unclear whether he actually said it or not. But it makes a heck of a story.
Where the Battle of Mobile Bay raged exists now the huge Mobile Bay Gas Field. It, Fort Morgan, and the surrounding area seem to coexist rather well.
Maybe a New Slogan is in Order?
I’m thinking, based on the sparsely populated parking lot at a busy time of day, that maybe many people are taking this Gulf Shores, Alabama restaurant at their word.
Do you think they have a clever slogan?
(We were not enticed into trying it.)
Gulf Shores
We just got back from a week of family vacation at Gulf Shores, Alabama. The locals call it the “Redneck Riviera.” No matter, the water is clear and the sand was very fine and white. The beaches go on forever.
We played in the sand, and took fuzzy photographs.
And we just hung out, and took even more fuzzy photos. That didn’t bother us, I hope it doesn’t bother you.
It’s very relaxing, it wasn’t crowded and our fellow beachgoer’s were very nice. Sometimes we didn’t care for their music, but we could move a 100 feet away and couldn’t hear them.
Basically, we just chilled out. Speaking of chilling. The temperature was typically in the high 80’s and low 90’s or about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than Tulsa. Have you ever heard of anybody going to lower Alabama to cool off in the summer?
We swam, walked, read, relaxed and did a lot of people watching. Something about watching somebody fishing is very relaxing to me.
