My Corner of the World – Caught in a Mountain Storm

In Red River. We enjoyed the Columbine Creek Trail immensely. So I started looking online for another trail that we could do and I found on All-Trails, the Middle Fork Lake Trail. Further from town but about the same distance and elevation except the gravel road to trailhead from the highway is a little over 1 mile long and it says don’t try unless you have a 4WD vehicle. We have a 4WD but I didn’t come out here to get stuck.

So we set out a little later than we planned and got to the gravel road to the trailhead and we came to a water bar in the road. I didn’t want to risk it so we went back to the highway and hiked to the trailhead. That added about 2×1.2 miles or 2.4 total to our excursion. As we hiked it, I saw that I could have gone over it easily with our car. I didn’t feel like hiking 0.4 miles back to the highway so we just kept on walking.

Got to the trailhead and off we went.

It was pretty open for a while. It looked like a fire had gone through years ago or maybe some logging, I don’t know. My Forest Ranger dad would know in a glance what the deal was and he could often tell layers of fires, or disease, and guess at the sequence of all that happened. Me, I can hardly tell one evergreen try from another.

The higher we went, the prettier it got. It looked like a wet year in this stretch of the mountains. Everything was green.

Nice stuff to look at everywhere we went.

Logan was doing pretty good on the hike.

We came to a water crossing just down from a waterfall. We just walked across it. The logs were too slippery and loose for us to trust and water felt good on our feet.

Heather was leading the way and I was bringing up the rear.

Lots of wildflowers

It was almost like somebody had planted them.

All sorts of colors.

As the trail got steeper, we entered a lot of switchbacks. We were at 10,000+ feet and so we each had our own strategy. My wife just charged on ahead. I was doing a rhythm where I was walking until my ears started pounding and then I would stop it stopped. According to my Garmin that put me in a heart rate range of 120 to 128 bpm. Logan just trudged on. It didn’t seem like we would ever get there. I knew from my long distance running days though that if you just keep going, you’ll get there.

And we did. Middle Fork Lake is the prettiest little mountain lake you’ll ever see. Crystal clear and I’m sure ice cold. We rested for a while.

And then started down. (Notice how fast things clouded up.)

We got a mile down the trail and then the rain and lightning started. It got worse and worse, especially the lightning. I personally know two people who have died of lightning. One of them in the mountains of New Mexico so I was a lot more worried about that than the cold rain. We were in the timber though so we kept going. I would have been leery of venturing in the open areas with lightning nearby. And then the hail started. Just a little bit at first but then it started coming down hard. It was maybe pea sized. It got to where it hurt. We stopped for a while and hunkered underneath a scrawny evergreen tree. I didn’t want to get out in the open while it was still hailing because I didn’t know how big the hail stones would get.

So we stayed there hunkered down as the hail peppered us and the wind picked up and got very cold and we were soaking wet. Sorry I wasn’t in the mood for taking photos and the only cameras we had were our cell phones. I thin lightweight long sleeve cover so I put that on even though it was soaking wet also. It seemed that we were hunkered down forever and after a while the hail gradually lessened and eventually stopped so off we went down the mountain.

It was still raining hard and the water was running down the trail about ankle deep. They were nicely constructed trails with water drains but on a switchback the middle drain just dumps the water back on the trail below. But as we continued to go down, the air got warmer and that was nice. When we got to the water crossing below the waterfall that I talked about above, the water was now halfway up to our knees. Nothing to do but go through it. Glad we had hiking sticks.

And then one of the happiest moments of my life; Heather asked me how far we had to go so I took a peek at my watch and I saw it was only 2.3 miles. Dang, I though it was going to be four miles. So yeah, we can do this! And the trail got flatter and wider and the water was less and less. So we made it to the trailhead and walked quickly the remaining 1.2 miles to the car. My main worry was that our car keys being electric wouldn’t work. Heather charged on ahead and by the time we got there she had the car started and warming up.

So we loaded up and took off with the seat heaters on high and the car’s blasting. So I was driving back to our condo and between the cold and the death grip I had on my hiking stick while hunkered down my arms were shaking and I was still freezing. So getting back to the condo and turning on the fireplace and taking showers putting on dry clothes was a wonderful thing.

So we were rookies. I knew better than to go up in the mountains unprepared for bad weather!! I grew up in the mountain west and heard lots about people who did like we did and had to be rescued and in real bad cases bodies were recovered. We took enough water and snacks. We needed rain jackets and waterproof containers for our phones and keys. I’ll be doing some more research before we try this type adventure again.

Looping the Loops at Chandler Park Wilds

IMAG0830

I think there used to be small farms in the area. There are remnants of old roads and residential power lines.

Wednesday night for a little change of pace I headed back to the wilds of Chandler Park. The privately owned, not posted land, west of the park in west Tulsa. Turkey Mountain gets kind of crowded this time of year. Not so at Chandler.

IMAG0833

The area is up high on a hill and there are lots of natural rock formations. It looks almost like it was built that way. Many people call the area “the lost city.” I think it would be a great place to hide some geocaches. Plus if I were a snake I think this would be like a snake resort area.

Chandler has lots of trails but there are no armies of volunteers out picking up trash. The trails are utility rights of way and ATV trails.

IMAG0834

Sometimes I think I take too many photographs. Especially when I’m on an unfamiliar trail and the sun is going down. That is what I do though, take photographs.

It sure is nice though. I never see deer on Turkey Mountain any longer. I saw three Wednesday. I didn’t get photos of them though.

IMAG0836

I’ve been down there before!! From the other direction. Connecting segments, learning the area.

The wilds are huge and a little intimidating. This is my third outing and I’m learning the area as I go. I am doing it by piecing together loops including new routes and old routes. So doing it after work is a little intimidating because I am just kind of guessing what turns to take. I would sure hate to be out here after dark on a trail I haven’t been on before.

IMAG0842

I’m a sucker for reflections of trees.

There are all sorts of creeks and sloughs with water that have to be navigated.

IMAG0840

So what was it? A horse maybe? A mutant critter from the nearby Compass Point Landfill Superfund site?

And you see sights that you would never see on Turkey mountain. I am not sure what kind of critter this is but he has been picked clean.

IMAG0847

Getting dark and I’m a ways from the car, but hey, lets take another photo, and another, and one more.

Finally when it got dark I found that I had guessed right and got on a trail I had been on before. A successful loop guess!

IMAG0848

I just simply cannot resist a smooth single track trail winding through the woods.

I just love finding new trails.

IMAG0856

I headed back to my car and passed Tulsa’s world class superfund site. The long forgotten Compass Point Landfill. An area where way back when the owners let everybody pretty much dump anything they wanted into a former rock quarry. Refinery wastes, tires, chemicals. Just chuck it in and don’t worry about it.

IMAG0859

I got back to the ball fields at Chandler Park. They weren’t playing baseball, there was a group of people working with their dogs.

IMAG0855

Miller time!! Or Hoptometrest Double IPA time. After I get home of course.

Anyways, I was one happy camper. Learning Chandler Park bit by bit.

Are you learning anything new?

Shameful or What?

Saturday afternoon, the weather said 91F, my car said 100F. Me and Logan need to get some exercise but he doesn’t handle the heat to well and he is still nursing his ankle. So I said, “Hey, you want to do go mall walking Buddy?” He kind of did the “Sure Dad, and so off we went.

IMAG0028

When is Sears ever going to learn about merchandising?

The plan was to park at the upper floor of Sears at one end and walk on down to Macy’s and back while going through the two big stores in the middle, J.C. Penney’s and Dillards.

IMAG0030

Logan couldn’t get out of Sears fast enough.

We weren’t really prepared, neither one of us was wearing Hush Puppy’s  for instance.

IMAG0031

Red Cross was there taking people’s blood.  I used to give blood many moons ago but things got worse and worse. One time they backflowed the heparin into my arm. Now that was painful. The last time I gave blood my wife had to come get me. So sorry guys. You can’t have my blood today. Logan didn’t feel like it either.

IMAG0032

Outside Eskimo Joes. If you are from Oklahoma you have probably heard of them. It is a restaurant that also sells a lot of clothes. I bought a nice Route 66 themed shirt on sale. The lady asked me if I would like to join their club. No thanks, last time I was here was in 1992.

IMAG0035

I think it was in Penney’s, I offerred to be Logan a Cars themed back pack. He didn’t seem that that would be okay for a high school senior. Besides his Mom does all his school shopping.

IMAG0036

The food court. Neither Logan can stand loud crowd noises. So no thanks, we’ll go elsewhere.

a IMAG0037

Macy’s had a great dish display.

IMAG0039

The old carousel. Not the same one as eon’s ago but he rode one just like it around and around and around.

IMAG0040

We were walking not shopping but this window scared me. Those super heroes look pretty angry to me.

IMAG0041

And what is up with this. Since when is ice cold equal to 37 degrees. For pure water it is 32 degrees. For sugar water it is probably a lot less than that is what I say.

a IMAG0047

What is up with all the hat stores. I have never actually seen anybody buy a hat in one of those stores. What is up with that?

IMAG0048

And what is up with all the sports logo merchandise? The University of Oklahoma, Okalahoma State, it just flies off the shelves. I’ll tell you though that one good thing about being a Dallas Cowboy fan is that they discount the merchandise pretty heavily about three games into the season.

a IMAG0049

At about 75% of the way through the mall. I’m getting kind of tired of it all. But the AC is working great.

IMAG0050

Logan outside the Apple Store. He is an Apple man through and through. I’m cheap, I have an Ipod touch and an Android phone. I can change the battery for $7 and have a big old cheap 32 Gig memory chip to help out the 16G built in. Try that with your Iphone.

IMAG0052

Logan and his cool new friends. Say goodbye dude, we have to go.

About 2.25 miles and DON’T YOU JUDGE ME!!!
