2025 AAA Route 66 Roadfest and Car Show in Tulsa

Last Sunday, Heather, Logan and loaded up and went down to the Tulsa State Fair and checked out the Route 66 Roadfest going on there. A celebration of all things concerning Route 66. This is the third year I have attended it and I love it.

Cars are a big part of Route 66. After all it is a highway and cars are best way to travel it.

A core part of the show are five or so sections that take the Route 66 by decades and talk about what was happening with the road and what was happening with the country.

There was a section of vintage travel trailers. These two ladies had this trailer and a bunch of associated things plus what I loved was they wore matching dresses color coordinated with the trailer. I hardly ever ask people if I can take their photo but I asked them and they seemed delighted to do so.

Our family of five in the 60’s also had a small travel trailer. We used a lot and I am sure that we saved lots of money but we were also very cramped. It was not too bad if the weather was good as you could always go outside. In bad weather though it led to lots of family togetherness. Much of it good, and some of it not so great.

Hey had metal glasses like those and a metal water pitcher. The iced water in such pitchers just seemed a lot colder than that in plastic water containers.

Everybody had these small phonographs. So nostalgic but I’ll take my Ipod with almost 6500 music tracks on it.

I love this two story travel trailer. Reportedly it has two bedrooms upstairs. What a spectacle that would be. What a nightmare pulling the thing in a strong crosswind.

1953 Buick Super Convertible Model 56C

My dad loved Buicks and I don’t know how many times he told me that you could tell how fancy the model was by the number holes in fender. So this was a three holer in his parlance, kind of like the Buick LeSabre. The Electra had four. We had a LeSabre when I was a kid. The first new car my parents ever bought. Dad saved money by getting it without air conditioning and then he salvaged parts from numerous cars in junkyards and built his own. It worked well but it took him months and it was kind of a complicated thing.

There were a ton of mid 1950’s Chevrolet Bel Air’s at the show. I always thought they looked cool

There were loads and loads of Ford Mustangs as well.

The 1950’s Ford Thunderbirds, in my opinion, were some of the most beautiful cars ever built. I especially like the unique colors.

I love the Land Rovers, especially the vintage models.

Volkswagen Karman Ghia

This was the prettiest car at the show. The Volkswagen Karman Ghia.

Next year is the centennial of Route 66. There are going to be big events all over the place including the Routefest in Tulsa.

Cars and More from the 2024 Route66 Roadfest in Tulsa

Heather and I attended the Route 66 Roadfest here in Tulsa a few weeks ago. I’ve been in years past but this was her first time. The event has lots of Route 66 information and speakers, displays, and all that and I have seen all that and loved it. This year I was there for the cars and trailers.

They had a group of old travel trailers. They were all dolled up for glamping. When I was a kid, we used similar units for traveling. Talk about tight!! Squeezing a family of five in there. It all worked though. My sister has told me that she felt sorry for my brother and I when Dad got a tent for us to sleep outside. She can rest her conscience. We loved it.

This one had a custom handhold to help get yourself in the trailer. All the old folks checking out the trailers were bumping our heads on the doors.

And here is a two story unit. We went in and shuffled around with everybody else. We didn’t go upstairs. It was very cramped up there.

For the cars. This old Mercury Woody Station Wagon might have been my favorite. Talk about beautiful.

Or maybe this old Chevrolet Corvette Singray might be my favorite.

How about an old Edsel. Very stylish but forever stained by the failure of the cars in the market.

How about a nice Shelby Cobra?

Or a Ford Thunderbird. Lots of Tbirds at the show. That’s my wife right besides the front passenger door.

A heavily modified Chevrolet Camaro.

Lots of chrome to go with the supercharger.

How about gold toned quad carburetors.

This Thunderbird had the best paint job at the show, IMHO.

I especially like the custom hood ornament.

And an old Plymouth Duster. They were all the rage back in the day. A big engine wrapped in a cheap car.

You don’t see too many of them around.

Another old Woody Station Wagoni.

And a vintage Ford Truck. Dad had one similar to this. Except it was yellow.

2017 Tulsa Auto Show

I took some time off work early today and checked out the 2017 Tulsa Auto Show at Expo Square in Tulsa. It is the 100th Anniversary of the Show!

I’ve been going to the show off and on for over two decades and it has steadily shrunk. Maybe this year will be a turning point.

They had new cars of course and many vintage cars. The vintage cars in my eyes are just plain a lot more interesting than the new cars. Most of the new cars look like Toyotas in my opinion. Nothing wrong with Toyotas. I love them that are very good dependable cars but a bit boring.

Not that many new cars have a sense of style. There are exceptions. I love the Ford Flex above and of course the car above it, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. I got on the web site and configured one for only $75,000 bucks and change. That is about five times what I paid for my Kia Soul.

For about the same price as the Hellcat you can have this Toyota  uh er,  I mean Maserati Levant boring if you ask me.

Or this storm chasing vehicle. I don’t get storm chasers. Do storm chasers do anything useful. Here in Oklahoma we watch storms on TV a lot. The typical storm chaser report is like “Yea Dan, we are in downtown Bartlesville and there is definitely some wind and some rain!” Seriously dudes. Stay home, get off the road. Where you can do something useful like take out the trash.

Adn I love the really old cars. Don’t want to own one mind you, I just like looking at them.

These cars are beautiful but give me a boring modern car any time to actually own and operate.

Cars have come a long way over the decades. Our family always had sketchy cars. I never knew if they would start or not. I don’t know how we did it back in the days before cell phones. I had lots of experience with getting a jump from somebody and other skills necessary to get things going. I don’t even own jumper cables any longer.

OSU Tech had a demo car that showed the engine and drive train moving. I loved it.
