“The Vault” is a restaurant in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma that was formerly a bank. It was a Mid Century Modern designed bank that incorporated rooftop parking and drive through facilities. It closed and sat empty for years until a local person converted it into a cool restaurant. They kept the circular stairs but they don’t want anybody using them. The restaurant has been in business for years now and is very popular.
And it has very nice shadows.

I don’t know why the trailcam took this photo. Maybe it has become sentient and is going to replace me? Or maybe it has developed empathy and wanted to help me out.
There is nothing like shadows on a freshly mowed yard.
Or intricate shadows on the patio.
My wife and I had coffee yesterday at place that has this nice outdoor space which always has a breeze. I love the sails that they use for shade. They actually allow some light through. I’ve been thinking about something like that for our back patio which is nice but doesn’t really have much shaded area. Here in Oklahoma with our high winds I think it would be imprudent to do this as a do it yourself project. The wind loads on the sails and supporting post would be considerable. Fortunately I have a friend who is a mechanical engineer and knows how to do those kinds of calculations.
I fired up the drone yesterday to get a few photos of the midday sky. I also pointed the camera straight down to our backyard. You can see our patio with no shade. The orange object in the middle of the yard is the drone landing pad and just to the left of it is me, piloting the aircraft. This is at about 40 meters above ground level.
And I lowered it to about 20 meters and took another photo.

So, should I see what would it entail to get some shade sails over our back patio?
Recently I went on a walk around Tulsa’s Lafortune Park. The walking trail winds around the park which contains a lot of things. An 18 hole golf course and a par 3 course as well, playgrounds, a pony league and little league ballparks, fishing ponds, a huge tennis complex, a high school, a public swimming pool, a public library and more!! The trail is paved and 3 miles long and is very popular. On warm days I like it’s shady spots.
The clubhouse for the golfcourse has two walls made out of concrete blocks. I don’t know how old they are but they look like the blocks that were common for screen walls back in the 50’s and 60’s.
Don’t see too much of them any longer. I love them. It makes for a screening wall with a lot of visual interest, including geometric shadows.
I’ll finish with these shadows. A tree in our backyard late in the day. I loved the pattern of sunlight and shadows on the tree trunk and limbs.
Coming out of the gym the other day I saw this bike rack with a snaky looking shadow. (In Oklahoma, “snaky” is a word. Like, those woods look kind of snaky to me.”

Went on a walk at a local park. No basketball games today. I played ball on these type courts growing up. Sometimes when it snowed we would shovel off the snow the best we could and play on the wet court.

Went on a walk the other day at Washington Irving Park in the southern Tulsa suburb of Bixby. Washington Irving came through the area and camped near here in 1832. That’s a long time ago by Oklahoma standards. I can do a nice easy one mile loop in this quiet pleasant place.
