Blue About Blue, Learning About Color

20180310-131824-1

That sinking feeling…

I am taking a photography class and it has been fun (I originally typed “phun”, I like it) and this week we are supposed to take a Pantone color and match it to something and photograph it and then talk about what the Pantone color of the year is. You may wonder what Pantone is? It is a company in New Jersey who is known for standardizing colors in a repeatable way. I had always wondered because in previous lives I had occasion to have signs made for various things, such as compressor stations or new offices and whatever company I was working for would send the sign design and the colors were just listed by numbers and I would ask, how do you know they will get it right and they told me not to worry about it, a good print shop will get it right. And sure enough they did whether it was British Petroleum Green, Shell Oil Yellow, Lear Petroleum Aggie Maroon, Champlin Petroleum Red, or Mobil Oil Red. They always got it right.

Great pic, except you can’t see the object I am trying to match.

Anyway I had a problem because I lost my assigned paint chip which was some sort of bright pinkish red so I decided to work things backwards and take an object and find the Pantone equivalent. Smart plan right, well guess what I couldn’t find the Pantone colors. So being the problem solver that I am I just went to Lowes with my Yeti and found the color among what they had that matched the object as close I could get it. They had several displays of different paint chips and I tried to get as close as I could. I tell you what matching colors is tiring and frustrating. Some colors that seemed close, didn’t seem so close later. They all look different depending on the light it is in.

This was taken with my cell phone. Looks like several matches.

I know people who are good at matching colors and it is magical. Once they do it, I can see the match but I can’t come up with it on my own. Often it seems counterintuitive but it works. I guess that I’ll stick to my day job.

Taken with my fancy schmancy Nikon D5300 with full sun whitebalance. This color looks lots less dark than the above photo.

So the winner, after much worrying and sweating is Olympic Paint’s “Florentine Lapis” number OL635.6 and I am not happy with it. Color is difficult. I pick out what I think is closest and it doesn’t quite photograph right despite taking the photo outside with the white balance adjusted. Color problems drive me crazy. You got how it looks to my eye, and then what the camera sees, and then what the monitor displays to you when you look at my photo.

Do you have a good eye for color? Tell me about it, because I don’t.

And as a bonus here is a link presenting Pantone’s color of the year.

PANTONE 18-3838 ULTRA VIOLET!

from the page: “…Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

Now you know all the secrets!! The color Violet is the solution to all our problems.

Mother’s Day Nursery Trip

DSCN5535

Sunday was Mothers Day and Heather went to a local nursery. Heather went to gather plants for her mother’s pots. I went along to take pictures.

DSCN5537

I can’t believe nurserys let people take pictures for free. Talk about a target rich environment for photographs.

DSCN5540

I love the plants and also the ornaments. That is Heather in the background. Somebody should be helping her don’t you think? Oh, yeah, well I was busy also.

DSCN5543

I found a whole flock of pink flamingos. Heather didn’t really act like she wanted one.

DSCN5544

She didn’t want these statues decorating her garden either.

DSCN5545

And back to Heather. She is having almost as much as fun as I am. She is a certified OSU Master Gardener so she knows her plants.

DSCN5549

I also know my plants. For example these are yellow flowers. In the background are some red flowers. Impressive huh?

DSCN5550

I love these rusty sunflowers. Here in Oklahoma you better tie them down good unless you want to see them sailing off in the wind.

DSCN5559

And then we went to Home Depot. I was amused by these two guys who were having trouble getting a fitting on a hose. You should have seen the tools they were using to get it done. Remember when the Home Depot guys knew their stuff?

DSCN5560

Home Depot has some nice flowers also.

DSCN5562

And I love this wind vane. Made me want to sing “The wheels on the truck go round and round… round and round…”

Anyway that’s a wrap on our trip to the nursery.

What have you been up to?

Digital Art Meme – Fair Food

Fair Midway Minnieapple Pie Impressions liquid lines I 100 pct

I am continuing on the Tulsa State Fair from my visit Sunday. I love the colorful food trailers at the fair. I am not a big fan of fair food but I do love the sights.  Has anybody ever tried the world famous, as seen on the Food Network, original Minneapple Pie? If you have tell us about it.

I used Topaz Impressions on this. I have now joined the Photoshop world. Son is taking a computer graphics class at school so I figure he can teach me how to use it. I’m really interested in learning about layers and using textures and such. I’ll keep you posted.

Today I’m linking with Digital Art Meme.

Tulsa Holiday Weekend Colors

Hey it is the Labor Day Weekend and things are mighty colorful here in Tulsa.

Lafortune Park Play Set

Logan and I found this Blue play set at Lafortune Park. I had never noticed that it looked like a huge vacuum cleaner.

 Liquor Store with Yellow Sign

I went geocaching and found a cache at this abandoned liquor store with the very yellow sign.

Dish Shopping

Heather and I are in the market for dishes. Is it just me or does everybody find it hard  to find dishes?

Untitled

Friday night Heather and I went to the First Friday Art Crawl in Tulsa’s Brady District north of downtown.  A good time was had by all. One of the galleries had red dresses for sale. Something about benefiting heart disease research for women.

DSCN4499

I went on a geocaching jaunt earlier that day to Tulsa’s Oxley Nature Center. I found this yellow flower. You want to know what kind it is? I just told you, it is a yellow flower!

DSCN4500

And I found some red berries. Don’t be asking what kind they are!

IMAG0305

How about these refreshing drinks a Sisserou’s before the Art Crawl. Heather and I were doing a little precelebrating of our 26th wedding anniversary. Yep, I’m one lucky guy alright!!

What kind of colors have you seen lately?
