National Day of the Cowboy

I learned something new the other day. The fourth Saturday of each July is the “National Day of the Cowboy.” Don’t get too excited.  You don’t get any time off or anything. It is a day to remember the Cowboys and Cowgirls of our country and their heritage. I grew up in the west and know a lot of Cowboys but I’m definitely not one of them. I’ve always been a city kid. Even when Iived in the country amongst cowboys.  One thing I ‘ve learned is that cowboys come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Fall Roundup Crew

For example above is a group of cowboys in Idaho. Only three of them have cowboy hats but that doesn’t matter. I think this is a late 1980’s photograph. The guy to the far left is my Dad. I don’t know what kind of hat he is wearing but I don’t think that John Wayne would be caught dead in it. The guy next to my dad is from Peru or somewhere. The photo was shot at a roundup for cattle for my Uncle Frank who is third from right with his wife, my aunt Lois.  They had an annual roundup of cattle in late Fall on my uncle’s ranch where they would gather up the cattle and doctor them up and figure out who was going to stay and who was going to become Wendy’s burgers.

My Dad is hardworking and tough and probably a good Cowboy but he makes a great grandfather. Here he is with son Logan.  Logan still likes Dad even though he would squash the old guy since Logan clears over 200 pounds these days. (But I can still take him. Or so I tell him quite often)

Here is Dad, the at Geronimo’s grave a few years ago at Fort Sill.  Wow, that’s post for you. Getting grilled by the MP’s at the gate (and Dad telling them that he used to be in the army about what we are doing to driving up and down the back country roads of Fort Sill passing all sorts of signs that look like we are about to be in trouble looking for Geronimo’s grave and finally finding it after dark when we were supposed to be back off the post.

PICT0002

Oh sorry, back to the subject. Here are the Cowboys all mounted up ready to go the roundup.

Mazatzal Mountains - Arizona - Early 1960's

And about twenty years earlier when Dad was the Forest Ranger on the Tonto National Forest in Arizona.

And even earlier when he was on either the Pecos or Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico. (I forget, I’m sorry)

And about the same time. I don’t know why he is standing in the back of the old pickup.

Anyway, my Dad is my favorite cowboy, who is yours?

According to the National Day of the Cowboy dot com. The following exemplifies the Cowboy Code. Nothing in there about beer or martini time but it still pretty much describes my Father.

1. Live each day with honesty and courage.
2. Take pride in your work. Always do your best.
3. Stay curious. Study hard and learn all you can.
4. Do what has to be done and finish what you start.
5. Be tough, but fair.
6. When you make a promise, keep it.
7. Be clean in thought, word, deed, and dress.
8. Practice tolerance and understanding of others.
9. Be willing to stand up for what’s right.
10. Be an excellent steward of the land and its animals.

Skywatch Friday – Back to the Beach

Orange Beach, Alabama

This week for Skywatch Friday I’m going back to the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. I didn’t get too many sunrise pics because I was too dang lazy to get out of bed in time and I didn’t get very many sunset pics because it clouded up too heavily in the evening. Don’t you worry though, I had lots to do.

Idaho Falls M.A.D. 4.5K Road Race Report

DSCN2199

Logan and I spent a long weekend in Idaho Falls, Idaho visiting my Dad. My sister Ellen, and her husband Irv, and their grandson Mr. Beans also showed up. Ellen is quite the runner these days and she convinced us to sign up for a race, the MAD. Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K.  So we rolled out of bed early Saturday morning and made our way over to the starting line.

DSCN2200

Mr. Bean’s first experience with a running gel. I’m not sure he liked it.

DSCN2202

The race started and took off  through the neighborhoods of south Idaho Falls. I had been wondering if the race was a beer run or not but I got my answer when I saw  these guys doing the traffic control. They are Mormon missionaries. So no beer I thought, but that is alright, these guys above and the other guys and gals on the route did a great job keeping the runners from getting run over. Notice Logan to the right, keeping his head in the run and not getting distracted like his old man.

DSCN2203

We made our way over and irrigation canal.

DSCN2206

And by a patriotic Christmas tree, or something. I am not sure what it was.

DSCN2207

Here is another missionary and that is Irv waving bye. We were not that close to him. He was headed out of the park to the left and we had to head in.

DSCN2208

And then this is where we cheated by a half a klick. I could have sworn that the course markings sent us down this route. See the blue shirts ahead of us? They were fellow runners so we were not cheating. See Logan to the right? He still has half a step on the old man.

DSCN2210

We made it out of the park and started running a busy street. Time for a shadow selfie. See who’s shadow is longer than mine?

DSCN2211

Here comes Irv. He finished the race and came running back to take my camera to get the finishing pic.

DSCN2213

And look who finished ahead of his old man.

DSCN2214

And the little (not so little) was gloating about it. Wait till the next race kid! By the way, do you have a ride home?

So, have you run a 4.5K race lately?

Temple at the Falls

Idaho Falls Temple on River

Situated on a pretty spot on the Snake River in Idaho Falls, Idaho is the Mormon Church’s Idaho Falls Temple. Next to the Falls it may be the most noticeable feature of the city. It is almost pure white and has a gold statue on top.

Idaho Falls Temple HDR

Groundbreaking started in 1939 and the Temple dedicated in 1945 and is still in use. It is not open to non-members but they do have a visitor center on the grounds open to everyone. I don’t think they mind visitors checking out the beautiful flowers on the ground.

Idaho Falls Temple Moroni

An interesting feature of most, not all LDS Temples, is the Angel Moroni. Interestingly enough the suggestion to add the statue to Mormon temples came from a non-Mormon sculptor, Cyrus Dallin. Almost everything you ever wanted to know about the Angel Moroni is here. He almost always faces east. I was too lazy to walk around the temple to get a picture of the front of the statue.

Back to Blood by Tom Wolfe

back to blood cover image

Back to Blood by Tom Wolfe is set in present day Miami, Florida and it is a highly politicized, racially charged, and ultra class conscious Miami. It’s main characters include a young Cuban American policeman whose heroic efforts made him a hero to the Anglo community and a pariah to his fellow Cuban American people, a class climbing celebrity porn doctor and his young pretty nurse whom he uses and abuses, a thuggish , possibly violent, Russian oligarch with a taste for fine art.

I loved this book and its various characters who are either rejecting their own class to advance up or are rejected by their class or are wanting to morph into new identities.

I feel that I’m kind of on my own in liking this book. Apparently it was a commercial failure. Good thing I don’t read reviews before I read books or I would have missed this one.

I give this book five stars!! So take that professional book reviewers!!

Turkey Mountain Work Day

Last Saturday I participated in a work day on Turkey Mountain. The Tulsa River Parks Authority, the Metropolitan Environmental Trust, Keep American Beautiful, and Budweiser got together and sponsored it. There were over a 100 people show up to provide slave labor and then attend an afterparty.

DSCN2181

Many people showed up to help rebuild part of the trail. That sounded like too much work for me so I joined some Budweiser guys and other volunteers on cleaning up the Yellow Trail. We pretty much picked the trail clean. Personally I picked up one Bud can, two Bud Lights, a Natural Light (called “Natty” by the Budweiser guys), and a Modelo. The Bud guys said that pretty much reflects the local market where they have a 70% market share. Plus they don’t make Modelo but they distribute it. So clean sweep for Budweiser!

DSCN2182

Our leader pointed out her “Pregnant Tree.” She said that one time she went and touched it and made a wish and her wish came true. Who can resist that story!! Everybody had to get in on that action, even the Budweiser guys.

DSCN2183

On our way back we passed a bunch of very tired volunteers who had been working on the trail. There was also this Bobcat. If I had a gazillion bucks I’d have a Bobcat. I would dig holes, knock down trees, and in general make a mess.  I know that is not very green of me but there it is.

DSCN2186

I just love taking pictures of people taking pictures. I think this is a Bud guy taking pics of his coworkers.

DSCN2188

And I got in behind him to take a group shot. Notice the adult malted beverages they had on hand. Budweiser also provided lunch for everybody.

All in all it was a great event. A lot of work was done.

Check out a Tulsa World newspaper article about it.

Our World – National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum – Oklahoma City

Last Friday was my day off. We had family business to attend to in Oklahoma City so made the trek down the Turner Turnpike. After we had our business done we visited the The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. It used to be called the “The Cowboy Hall of Fame” and that is what almost everybody in Oklahoma calls it but you know times change.

End of the Trail

The “End of the Trail” sculpture right at the entrance is huge, beautiful, and haunting. I never get tired of looking at it.

Abe Lincoln

I love their Abraham Lincoln sculpture.

Cavalry

They have a huge collection of western art and lots of information about western life and cowboy culture. I love this cavalryman and his horse in full charge.

Blanket 9-11

I am always looking for new things. I had never noticed this blanket before.

If you find yourself in Oklahoma City with a few hours to spare and are interested in all things western then go check it out.
