High Plains Skywatch

20190520-144609-2

This past week we ventured to Colorado Springs from Tulsa for our great nephew’s high school graduation. We had quite the adventure going up, wind, rain, snow. Yep snow in May!!

20190520-184928-6

Yep, snow, luckily it was very slushy and not icy and Heather’s new car has all wheel drive with a “snow mode.” I love snow mode but not snow.

20190520-200630-9

Heather found this cool little Casita for us to stay in an older part of Colorado Springs. Ultra cool and snug in the freezing May weather. It was adobe and I love the look of snow and adobe.

20190522-130539-6

We went to my sister Ellen’s place out in the plains east of town. Here is son Logan out in the pasture.

20190522-130326-5

Ellen is an artist and she showed off her new “She Shed” where she does her painting.

20190522-131100-10

And we got to see her horses.

20190522-112211-1

And I found my BIL Irvin’s geocache out in front of their house.

20190523-130659-1

The trip home had some great skies that looked threatening but we didn’t have the rain and snow that we had going out. While we were gone Tulsa had some pretty bad flooding that is continuing. Our home is high and dry I can report.

Skywatch Friday – Arkansas River Views

20190326-193717-11

Since daylight savings time I am bicycling along the Arkansas River Trails here in Tulsa so I get to see lots of sunsets and other views of the river.

20190408-191848-5

I love the old Railroad Bridge converted to a cool pedestrian bridge. It is blocked off and is going to be replaced soon.

20190408-191924-7

How romantic is this, a golden sunset at the tank farm of one of our local refineries. Ah, the sweet smell of sour crude.

20190408-191804-2

The redbuds have lost their blooms by now but hey, I am showing you a photo anyway.

20190408-193846-11

And some purplish tones from another sunset.

Skywatch Friday – Springtime Skies

20190501-130402-7

Wow, we had some storms Tuesday night and tornadoes all over green country. We were fine and everybody I know is fine but one unfortunate person died when their car got swept off a freeway interchange. The car was found a mile with the person’s body in it. Please don’t drive into high water folks, especially if it is moving quickly.

20190501-130157-5

We are used to rain here. Tulsa gets an average of 43 inches per year and things dry out quickly. I found out in my research that the US average is 39 inches so we are not as drenched as I thought we were.

20190501-085813-3

A final shot from my office window. I love the clouds. That is the Arkansas River off in the distance toward the left center of the photo.

I hope everybody is having a great and safe week!

Skywatch Friday – My New Lensball

20190127-202944-3

One of my favorite bloggers, Hootin-Anni, from south Texas posted recently about her Lensball, a sphere of optical quality glass that you use to take photographs of the refracted image.

20190126-135434-14

So, being the copycat that I am I had to go one of my own and I am still experimenting with it and checking out instagram feeds and such. One thing I have learned is that if you are not careful in full sun you might get burned as it is somewhat of a light magnifier.

20190126-135701-9

Also, the image comes out upside down so you you have to turn the photo upside down sometimes. So far I like it. It does require a little more manipulation in that you have both hands occupied so I have used it with my Nikon point and and shoot rather than my “good” camera.

So anyway, I guess that I’ll keep it.

Skywatch Friday – Yule Edition

20181222-220858-3

We had a full moon just before Christmas. Usually known as the Cold Moon. I found a new name that I like, “Moon Before Yule.” It was bright, silvery, and beautiful here in Oklahoma.

Also just before Christmas we had dinner with some friends and then went to Tulsa’s superb Gathering Place to check out the Christmas lights. We missed the lights but just walking through the place is great. Aboveis the Williams Lodge.

20181219-121805-13

I’m continuing my geocaching trying to get to 2000 before year end 2019. I am finding myself in very out of the way places like the remote cemetery above where my only company was a few deer. We had a standoff for literally a minute or two with them and standing motionless until, I was like, okay you win and waved my arms and off they ran.

My brother drove over from Tennessee for Christmas and we are having a good visit and sharing Christmas with him. Its always nice to have family and consider ourselves blessed that we can be together.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!

Skywatch Friday – Autumn Skies

20181106-112358-1

I love Autumn, what can I say. I took this photo at Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa.  I love this kind of stuff.

20181106-114321-3

I was at Gilcrease to see their latest exhibition “Albert Bierstadt – Witness to a Changing West.” If you are a fan of western art then you need to come see this show. The above painting is my favorite of the show, “The Buffalo Trail.”

20181106-114215-2

And this was a backdrop showing the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve near Pawhuska. So a rare selfie for you. Not that I did you a favor did I.

20100521_43

I feel bad so this is a photograph of the Tallgrass Prairie that I took myself years ago.

20181106-171624-1

And with the resumption of standard time, I am starting to take photos of the sky from the office building where I work. I’ve taken lots and lots of pics from here looking off to the northwest. That is the Arkansas River in the distance. Sorry for all the reflections.

Autumn Skywatch

20181023-162001-1
Oklahoma City Starbucks Sky

The family loaded up earlier this week and traveled to western Oklahoma.

20181024-080113-4

We went to Clinton, Oklahoma. I went over and took this photo early in the morning of their Route 66 Museum.

20181024-095719-1

Later, I took this photo of this tree in our hotel parking lot. I love Fall Color.

20181024-120249-2

We were in Clinton for the funeral of a family member. He was one of those great guys in life. Not flashy or one to call attention to himself but very nice, very smart, and a great guy. He was married almost sixty years and raised a great family. He was also a John Deere mechanic for about the same amount of time. They said he bled green.

20181024-131515-1

His employer, the local John Deere dealer parked these two huge tractors in front of the church in his honor. I had never seen anything like that before!!

20181025-120241-1

Back in Tulsa, I found this giant cottonwood tree in a tiny little park in East Tulsa.

20181025-123126-2

Fall can even make parking lots look better.

20181025-123259-4

Close by I came across this church called “God’s Church.” I love the confidence in the name. I checked out their web site and they seem to be a vital and active part of the community ministering to their members and the community. What more can you ask of a church?

I think this is my blog post 3001 more or less. I’ve been doing this blogging thing for over ten years now and I really do appreciate the support I’ve got for my humble little slice of the interwebs.

That’s about it for this week. I’m linking with Skywatch Friday.

Skywatch Friday – A Walk in the Park

20181006-121443-6

This past weekend son Logan and I decided to take a walk around Tulsa’s Lafortune Park. Lafortune Park has a big playground, picnic areas, tennis courts, a high school, baseball parks, and two golf courses with a walking path about 3 miles long winding around it all.

20181006-121629-8

I didn’t bring my camera, just my cell phone. Luckily there were some pretty decent skies.

20181006-121733-9

Part of the trail was a little muddy. In the 26 years we have lived in Tulsa I bet that I have either walked or run around Lafortune hundreds of times.

20181006-124402-17

I love pedestrian bridges. Logan is now 20, when he was about 3 he liked to go hide under this bridge and pretend he was a troll. The kid used to drive me crazy!! Perfectly good playground 100 feet away. Oh well.

20181006-130118-21

There he is. He lags a little behind but it works out because I take pictures and study on things and eventually he catches up to me.

Skywatch Friday – Tulsa’s Boston Avenue Church

Boston avenue 2018 september

In a city of Art Deco masterpieces, the Boston Avenue Church is among the best. It was built in the 1920’s and is still just beautiful. It is even more beautiful on the inside and the church is very accommodating to those who want to tour the building.

And of course since it is a 15 story building that stands tall by itself it almost always makes for a decent Skywatch Friday photo.

Skywatch Friday – Closing out September

Harvest Moon 2018 (1 of 1)

This month we had the Harvest Moon. I love full moons. I take photos of all I can and apply all sorts of filters and editing to them. I hope that doesn’t bother you.

20180919-190956-1

I went for a walk last week and caught a sunset and as a bonus I got lots of long narrow tree trunk shadows.

20180912-184336-10

This is the Powerline Trail on Turkey Mountain, here in Tulsa. It’s the fast route from the north end of the wilderness park to the parking lots on the south end. It’s not the easiest though, you go straight up and down a couple of big hills. But is hard to get lost on it.

Various sights around Tulsa this week.
