Baseball at ONEOK Field

Last Thursday SuperPizzaBoy and I went to see the Tulsa Drillers play baseball at ONEOK Field downtown.

(“Hey, isn’t that Yogi and SPB sitting behind home plate?”)

We had a great time. I got to watch some great baseball, son got some pizza and ice cream. (Don’t tell his Mom!)

I ask you what kind of nerd scores the game?

Yeah, really, what of it?

Son was getting kind of bored with things until the 7th inning stretch when he came to life. First because, he loves to sing and this being Oklahoma we sang both “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and “Oklahoma.” Son loves Oklahoma.

Second, I promised him we would go home at the end of the inning.

Ready, Set, Run 2011

Saturday, the Autism Center of Tulsa had their annual Ready, Set, Run 5K and Fun Run at Hunter Park. It is a major fundraiser for the orgainization and a celebration of the Heroes of the event which are the children who have been diagnosed with a form of autism. The idea is to form teams around the Heroes. Our Hero is SuperPizzaBoy.

(Don’t worry about the trampoline, the mat has been replaced and it is back in service. I am a little worried about the maniacal grin though. What do you think?)

His team was called “Logan’s Stormbreakers.” He had a scheduling conflict and couldn’t make it. Sweetie was his ride so she didn’t make the event either.

From left to right, Jonni, lucky Me, and Alyssa. I don’t know how I got in between two of the hottest women at the event. They are also two of the hottest mommybloggers in Tulsa. Jonni has That’s Baloney. She has a a great sense of humor and if you want to know what it is like being a mother to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, hers is the blog to start with. Alyssa’s blog is Out on a Lam. She has a great sense of humor and blogs a lot about her children and her views on life in Oklahoma. Both are must reads whenever they post for me.

Alyssa was also nice enough to join SPB’s team and run in the 5K race. Kudo’s to you Alyssa. Jonni’s team for her son Michael was “The M Team.” She didn’t run the race, her husband “Doc” did. As usual, he kicked my butt, so I guess Jonni kicked my butt by proxy. Alyssa and Jonni are both killer facebook scrabble players.

The 5K is fun and all that but the big thing at this race is the Fun Run. This where the families who are affected by autism line up and walk around the pond at Hunter Park.

The line is incredibly long. The gun sounds and everybody proceeds in a leisurely stroll.

Since SPB wasn’t there, I started at the very last of the line with the team sign. It took about 10 minutes just to get to the starting line.

The event was very successful in terms of raising money, raising consciousness, and generating fun. I helped out a little bit before the run but there were some very hard working staff and volunteers.

Jennifer is a cofounder and codirector of the Autism Center of Tulsa, (“ACT”)and one of the nicest persons I’ve ever met.

Michelle and Robert. Michelle is also a cofounder and codirector of the organizaation. Her husband Brian is great guy and was SPB’s soccer coach for several years. Robert and I worked together the night before the event putting up signs and marking the course.

Christine is a hard working member of ACT and genuine nice person.

Shannon was in charge of the volunteers. She also put up signs and banners the night before the event. She is tireless and a demon facebook scrabble player besides.

We all had a lot of fun and am looking forward to next year.

Happy Mother’s Day

This isn’t the clearest photograph I have with Sweetie but it is one of my favorites. It shows her complex and loving personality.

She is a great mother to our son. Just ask him. She is his confidante, chief advocate, chauffer, and cookie baker.

(The messiness of the garage is my fault.)

She is a hard worker. Not just at the home but in all the various volunteer activities she is in at son’s school and other places.

She is very down to earth and centered.

I don’t think anybody loves animals better than she does.

She is also my best friend.

Signs, Signs

Bob Seger at the BOK Center in Tulsa

Last week Sweetie and I loaded up and went to the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa to see Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band in concert. (I’ll apologize right up front for the fuzzy photos.)

I’ll admit, I love his music. In general I hate the 1970’s to early 80’s era music but that is mainly because of over exposure. I have had several years of XM Satellite therapy and I’m feeling much better about music from that era. I mean, I loved it at the time, but after the 10,000th hearing it gets a little old.

Anyway, Bob Seger at 66 years old is selling out major arenas. He is bypassing the casinos. There is some life in the old rocker yet.

He sang, he played guitar and the piano, he kept he crowd on their feet the whole time.

He was so hot, he literally burst into flames at one point, yes literally. I caught it on film.

He not only brought the world’s biggest saxophone with him, he brought half of Michigan down to Oklahoma.

He had a bunch of horns, and a bunch of guys playing guitar,

(The lady on the right, it was her birthday, in case you want to send her a card. She’d appreciate it, I’m sure.)

The crowd loved Bob Seger but they LOVED the lead guitar, Mark Chatfield. He lives in Glen Pool, Oklahoma. Right outside Tulsa. (Also the home of the weirdest city slogan of all time, “The Town That Made Tulsa Famous.”)

Talk about a lead guitar, playing like lead guitar. He was berserk, he went crazy. He whipped his guitar left, right, up and down. You could tell that the rest of the band knew to stay out of his way. No Generation X or Y angst about his mommy leaving him at a day care center when he was little. He rocked and he rolled. He owned the place. The crowd applauded him for five minutes when he was introduced. Seger didn’t seem to mind.

Seger played for well over two hours and had two encores. He wore us down. He had the whole band take a bow.

I rate his concert a four out of five stars. Go see him when he comes your way. You won’t be sorry.

Cain’s Ballroom and a new Star

About a week ago I went for a little run during my lunch hour. I meandered north of Downtown through the Brady District and passed by the Legendary Cain’s Ballroom, former home of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

The Ballroom has stars in the sidewalk commemorating famous musicians with ties to Cain’s. Here are some of them.

The Pot Thief who Studied Ptolemy by J. Michael Orenduff

The Pot Thief who Studied Ptolemy by J. Michael Orenduff is another book in the his Pot Thief series starring Hubert (“Hubie”) Schuze a pottery store owner in the Old Town section of Albuquerque. He has flexible hours at his store, he counts among his friends a crooked cop, a priest, and a Basque afternoon margarita drinking companion. He also disagrees with the United States Congress on policies regarding digging for pots on public lands. And he has talents for picking locks and fooling security systems. He is a very resourceful guy and a lot of fun.

In this book he finds out about some sacred pots that belong to the San Roque Pueblo. He wants to return the pots, well, maybe most of them, to the pueblo but they are in a condo complex with a very good security system where he has to use all his talents.

If you would like an interesting, lively mystery, steeped in New Mexican culture this book is for you.
