Skywatch Friday – September Sunset

September Sunset.jpg

It is the middle of September and summer is hanging on and not letting go. It was over 90 and humid on Wednesday. I’m still training for the Tulsa Run 15K in late October and maybe the Route 66 Half Marathon in November. Last night I ran eight miles along the River Parks trails here in Tulsa.

I’m a very slow runner. In fact I would have to speed up to be slow but I don’t have any time goals in mind for the races. My goal is to finish vertically. Training on the next to the river is very peaceful and it easy very easy to just zone out and flow with the other runners, walkers, and bicyclists. I have been running the trails for over 21 years now and just love them.

Do you have a place where you can go and just zone out?

Skywatch Friday – South Dakota Sunrise

Flandreau Sunrise.jpg

Early morning sunrise on my drive out of Flandreau, South Dakota. I had already said my goodbyes to the family the night before and I was off on my 670 mile drive back to Tulsa via South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. I caught this sight in my rear view mirror so I had to stop and take a picture on the rise out of the Big Sioux River Valley.

Skywatch Friday – Running the River

Untitled

I love this time of year for a number of reasons but a big reason is that the sun is still up during my Wednesday evening “kitchen pass” run so I can run for a while and take photographs for a little while.  I’m trying to get ready for my 20th consecutive Tulsa Run 15 kilometer race in late October, plus I am going to see if I have one more half marathon in me for in November, so I’m starting to build up mileage and there is no prettier place to do that than along the Arkansas River in Tulsa.

Soon enough I’ll be running in the dark. That happens when you are as old, fat, and slow as me, but hey I’m still in race.

Skywatch Friday – South Dakota Moon with Venus

Crescent Moon, Venus,

Last weekend I made a quick trip up to South Dakota from Oklahoma to attend a family reunion. I had a good time on the drive. I stopped and found some geocaches and took a few pictures and took my time getting up there. Driving along I29 in South Dakota south of Sioux Falls I spotted the crescent moon over the wheat fields and pulled off the next rest stop to take a photograph.

When I saw the powerlines and was a little disappointed but I’m big into the concept that if you don’t get what you want then you work with you got so I got an electrical transmission tower along with my sliver of a moon and my planet venus. Which since I’m a generous guy I’ve decided to share the moon, Venus, and even the tower with you.

Skywatch Friday – Orange Beach

Orange Beach Sunset

We vacationed earlier this summer in Orange Beach, Alabama, the Redneck Riviera. A very low key nice place to take a family. Since the beach runs runs roughly east to west the sun sets behind the bay instead of over the Gulf. With all the buildings and such that means you need a little elevation if you are on the beach to see the sunset so this was shot from seventh floor of our condo building.

I don’t know why the sun looks so big just as dips below the horizon but I’ll take it.

Skywatch Friday – El Rio Verde

Sunday evening we had dinner at a north Tulsa Mexican Food restaurant (El Rio Verde for those who want to know, a great place, in a not so great part of town). Afterward we were chatting on the sidewalk and I noticed the colorful sunset so I pulled out my trusty employer provided Pantech generic android phone (that my employer got for free from AT&T) and got up on my tiptoes and reached over the chain link fence and shot the pic in HDR mode (whatever that is) in between the strands of barbed wire (pronounced “bobbed wire” here in Oklahoma, just so you know.)

Some shots you plan for and some shots just show up and wait for taking.
