Dia De Muertes (Day of the Dead) at Tulsa’s Living Arts

_DSC0297

November 1st I got a kitchen pass from Heather and headed out to Living Arts in the Brady District to check out their Day of the Dead celebration. I first went two years ago and I thought it was wonderful.  Dia De Muertos (Dia De Los Muertos is a back translation from English I read) is a day where people in Mexico honor and remember their relatives and close friends who have died.

_DSC0295

Often the dead are remembered via Ofrendas (Offerings) which are altars built to honor the dead person. It may have photographs of the deceased or possessions and often contain favorite foods or beverages and if it is a child, a toy. Living Arts in their “Altared Spaces” Exhbit displayed Ofrendas made by people for their loved ones. In fact they solicit the public to put up Ofrendas.

_DSC0298

Some were for people who had a long life and many children and grand children.

_DSC0299

And others were for people who passed away way too young.

_DSC0302

They were all works of art.

_DSC0304

The Ofrenda above is for those people who died while trying to cross the border.

_DSC0315

I love the concept of honoring lost ones with an Ofrenda.

_DSC0328

Living Arts also had murals painted just for the event. I love them for their humorous macabre riff.

Dancing skeletons

_DSC0324

Here is one in honor of dogs. Our dogs just don’t live long enough if you ask me.

_DSC0320

The murals are beautiful. Even the ones with gas meters in front of them.

_DSC0350

There was dance also. Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca of Tulsa put on a great performance of folk dances.

_DSC0357

The costumes were colorful

_DSC0361

And the dancers were lively

_DSC0374

It was beautiful and I had a front row seat for some reason.

And there was all sorts of other things going on. Food vendors, crafts, other performers. You can bet that I’ll be back next year!

Skywatch Friday – Orange Beach Sky

Orange Beach Sky - Impressions Okeefe

This week for Skywatch Friday I’m going back to our summer vacation in Orange Beach, Alabama.  I can sit and look at the Gulf of Mexico for hours, and have especially when there is a little color in the sky. Our Fall here in Oklahoma has been way too dang warm. I know the cold and ice is coming. I’m hoping we get back to the Gulf next summer.

Go check out Skywatch Friday

In Search of the Rid(dle)diculous Geocache

DSCN7108

I have been after a geocache named “That’s Just Rid(dle)iculous!!!” by a geocacher named M5. (Geocachers have names, I’m known as YogiABB.) Its  puzzle cache which means one has to solve a puzzle to find the cache.

DSCN7110

This puzzle involves arithmetic and some baffling wordage about the three kids and the sum of their ages, and the product of the their ages, and one’s a muggle and oh my. I don’t know what is going on.

DSCN7111

Ithought I had it so I went out the area and bushwhacked to what i thought was ground zero and looked here and there and up there and down here and around and around. so I didn’t find it.

DSCN7112

DSCN7114

I didn’t find the cache but I had a pleasant hour in the woods, Plus One for ME! And found a new secret trail!! Score One More for Me.!! It is not very long but it is sweet.

DSCN7115

So I’ll take that.

2016 Tulsa Run 15K Race Report – A Whole Lotta Walking Going On

DSCN7087

The view of the starting line area from the office. I sit and surf the net and drink coffee until right before the start.

I ran the Tulsa Run 15K Saturday morning. It was my 22nd time to do it. I missed last year because of a knee injury and I walked the 5K race instead.

DSCN7090

The view when I get to the starting line. I’m always amazed how fast the lead runners are.

So I was all pumped and a little nervous. My training was not what it should be. My longest run was only about 7 miles and I didn’t do the interval training that helps so much on longer runs. I knew that I was going to be running and walking. I’ve learned in such a situation to be patient and start walking earlier so that I can run more later in a race.

DSCN7092

There are several bands on the course. These guys have been entertaining the runners for years and I have been sticking my camera in their face and taking their pic every year for years. I hope they don’t mind.

I started a quarter mile back from the starting line and it took almost five minutes to get the line. And then a quarter mile later I decided to take my first walking break of about a minute.

DSCN7093

Turn the corner and people are stretched out ahead for two miles ahead.

So from then to the end of the race my plan was to run four streetlights on level ground, and then walk one. Going downhill, I would just run to the bottom of the hill. On uphills I would run two streetlights and walk one. It worked fairly well. So on average I walked about a third of the route.

DSCN7095

Lots of spectators on Cherry Street. Sitting outside in shorts in late October.

The big news this race was that it was going to be warm, and it was relatively. There was a pretty good breeze though so I never felt over heated. I don’t know if it is global warming or not but this race used to be downright cold at times. Today it was comfortable from start to finish.

DSCN7098

There go some dinosaurs. I think their costumes got very hot.

The race is basically one long meditation for me. I just kind of zone out and feel the sun on face, and the wind, the clop, clop, clop, of thousands of shoes flopping on the pavement and the conversations of dozens of people within earshot.  I can feel my body responding to the stress of it all. The race has had all sorts of different starting and stopping points and routes and I know all the landmarks by heart and I just mentally tick them off as I go by. It all seems like it is over just a few minutes after it starts.

DSCN7099

Runners are so trashy throwing down their cups. I love it although I can hear my mother yelling from heaven to pick that up right now.

I enjoy my fellow runners also. Especially all those who dress up. It is Halloween season after all. Years ago, before 9/11 a delegation of soldiers would from Fort Sill would show up and run in formation, chanting all the way to the end. They used to be a benchmark. When you asked people how they did in the race, many would say “well I finished ahead of the Army” or ” I couldn’t keep up with the Army.” I really miss the Army.

DSCN7100

Ah, 10K is always a milestone to me. I mean that means there is only 5K to go. I can always walk 3 miles. I got it made now.

One thing noticeably missing this election season is the politicians. Well, I’m sick of politicians, how about you? I am so ready to get this season over.

DSCN7104

Oh boy, steep hill climbing from Southwest Boulevard to downtown. Glad that I had some oomph left from walking earlier in the race. I had the energy to run later in the race.

The other thing changing since I started is that I hardly know anybody who runs it. I ran my first Tulsa Run when I was 39 years old and I knew lots of people. That was back before the internet was in wide use and it was fun to get the paper and go through and the results  and circle everybody I knew. Some of whom I didn’t even know ran. Lots of my cohorts dropped out from running and it seems that others now run the longer races. The Route 66 Marathon has supplanted the Tulsa Run as the premier race in town. I like both of them but the Tulsa Run will always be special. My very first race of any kind was the 1994 Tulsa Run.

DSCN7105

An impromptu Zumba routine put on by the LuLulemon ladies. I love them and their signs.

Anyways, I will be running this race any way I can for as long as I can. When I can’t run the 15K, I’ll run the 5K, then the fun run. Then I’ll man a water stop or whatever I can do.

I can’t wait until next year’s race!!

A big thank you to the sponsors, officials, the army of volunteers, the police who provided traffic control, the spectators and anybody else who helped with the race and a huge thank you to my fellow runners.

Skywatch Friday – Evening on the Arkansas River

Arkansas River Sunset 3-Edit- Topaz Textures

Evenings on the Arkansas River this time of year are very peaceful. The weather is mild and pleasant and there are lots of people out strolling with the kids, bike riding, running, and skateboarding. Its the place to be.

I cheated on this and used a texture backed off about 75%.

Almost Wordless Wednesday – Night Geocaching

DSCN7022

I was at a Geocaching Campout put on by the Tulsa Area Geocachers recently. A bunch of temporary caches are hidden by the participants for other people to go find.

DSCN7021

One of the most popular caches are the night caches. They are fun. You go out in the woods to the coordinates and then you start looking for something that glows or reflects a flashlight and off you go following the trail. You get spider webs in your face and tend to trip a lot and scare mysterious critters as you stumble and bumble through the woods.

DSCN7020

So what’s the point you ask? The point is following the paths to the end and enjoying the journey. I mean without twisting your ankle too bad or getting lost out in some woods where there is no cell phone reception. Best to have spare batteries for everything, flashlight, GPS receiver.

DSCN7018

Have you ever had as much fun as this?

Wizard World Tulsa

_DSC0270

Logan and his friend Q trying out some of the games.

Sunday Logan and I traveled downtown to see WizardWorld Tulsa. A popular culture event. Popular culture in this case goes toward superhero movies, videogame characters, cartoon characters, and so on.

_DSC0271

A car from same famous Zombie movie that I didn’t see.

I find it fascinating although I miss most of the cultural references.

_DSC0273

Cool little Jurassic Park Jeep.

I gravitate toward the cars. I get cars. Mot of them anyway. Many of the cars you could sit in them and get your photo taken. No thanks. No way my face adds anything to the car.

_DSC0274

Remember back to the future? Remember the Delorean?

aa

_DSC0275

And the Ghost Busters car. We watched the new Ghost Busters on video this weekend.

_DSC0276

A big reason that people go to a Comic-Con is to Cosplay, or dress up as your character. To see and be seen and get your photo taken. I have trouble walking up and asking somebody if I could take their pic.

_DSC0280

I told Logan that next year we need to Cos-Play. I think I’ll show up as Walter White, the chemistry teacher gone meth cook from Breaking Bad. I love that guy. Talk about pure evil. Logan said he is just going to get a mask.

The Tulsa World has a photo gallery with some of the Cos Play costumes.

This is our third year to attend Wizard World. Check out our 2014 and 2016 visits.

Last Long Run Before the Race

DSCN7029

Saturday I made my last long run before the Tulsa Run 15K coming up this next weekend. My training is not going like I thought it would.

DSCN7035

Basically I have been running only one day a week because i have a sore back every morning. Weekday mornings is generally the balance of my training where I do my resistance traiining (essential to successful running) and my shorter runs.

DSCN7040

My back is killing me in the morning in one particular spot about midway down my left side.  And it disappears about 20 minutes after I wake up in the morning. No, the bed is not uncomfortable but the pain is not quite excruciating in the morning.

DSCN7042

aa

DSCN7044

So I get up and make coffee and read the paper and check up on what is going on online.

DSCN7046

So anyway, the Tulsa Run is 15K and I’ve only trained about 11. Things will be okay though. I know how to stretch things out. I first ran the Tulsa Run in 1994 and ran it every year through 2014. Last year I injured a knee and so I walked the 5K but I’m running the 15K again. It will be my 22nd time.

DSCN7061

How about you? I bet you know how to stretch things when you have to.

Weekend Reflections – Sand Creek early on Sunday Morning

Sand Creek Reflections-Edit - Topaz Textures

On my weekend geocaching/camping trip last Sunday to Oklahoma’s beautiful Osage Hills State Park,  I got up early Sunday morning, struck camp and went down to Sand Creek and took a few pics. Fall is not very advanced here but that didn’t matter. The light Sunday morning was magical so I walked and hopped the rocks along the rapids of the creek taking pictures. With this one I was going to crop the the shadow selfie out but what the heck. I’ll leave it in.
