Skywatch Friday – Countryside Skies

Porter Skies Adjust Restyle

Last Saturday we went drove out to country to fetch peaches. We parked across the street from the fruit stand and I just had to take a photo of the view with the blue sky and big ole fluffy clouds. Everybody in the city needs to get out in the country every now and then just to see what things look like without powerlines.

When was the last time you were out in the country?

Digital Art – Carousel

Carousel Woodland Hills Glow Dayglow

Carousels have always both fascinated and scared me a little. They are such overwhelming machines with lights and movement. I have tried to capture that here on a carousel in our local mall. My tools of choice were Topaz Labs Glow and Adjust tools to kind of amp things up a little bit. The result is more what I see at a carousel than what the camera shows is there.

Simon Malls Withdraws Proposal to Put an Outlet Mall on Turkey Mountain

Wagon Wheel Lake

Wagon Wheel Lake on Turkey Mountain

Great news for those of us who love Turkey Mountain. The City of Tulsa announced that Simon Property Group has formally withdrawn their proposal to build an outlet mall on Turkey Mountain and will pursue building the shopping center in the Tulsa suburb of Jenks. I love that Simon came to their senses. Building a shopping center on the mountain was a very stupid idea for a bunch of reasons. Kudos to a lot of people and organizations and especially the Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition for getting this stopped. It is not often in Oklahoma that the people step up and say no to big business on something dumb like this. Their efforts got a lot more people into the park which made things kind of crowded sometime but I think people realized what a treasure we whad.

Weekend Update

We had a lot going on this weekend.

_DSC0332

Logan had his first riding lesson in a long time. He sprained his ankle back really badly back in May and had been in a boot and then on restriction since then. He was glad to get back in the saddle on a hot Saturday.

DSCN4199

After the riding lesson we loaded up in the car and headed off to Livesay Orchards out in the boonies about 45 minutes southeast of Tulsa. We hadn’t been there since Logan was a baby and man is it popular. We ended up in a group of nine cars headed out there and when we got there we found out there was a line to get in. The line moved fast though. I mean they are selling mainly peaches so it doesn’t take long for people to pick out what they want and move on.

DSCN4200

And man where their peaches, bushels, pecks, half pecks anything you wanted as long as it was peach related.

DSCN4202

After that we headed cross country to the ‘burb of Bixby to Dotson’s Produce and picked out some Amish Tomatoes. I never did figure out if that was a type of tomato or the religion of the farmer that grew them.

DSCN4204

Dotson’s had all sorts of other produce. We tend to go crazy in a place like that.

DSCN4207

We decided to counterbalance all healthful vibe of the produce with some Hawaiian Ice which is Okie for ice cream cone at a place nearby. Part of the fun is waiting in the heat. Is it against the law for those places to provide shade for their customers?

DSCN4213

Sunday was church, seeing the movie “Ant-Man” with one of Logan’s friends and then an historic occasion. Logan left with his friend, with his friend driving. First time that happened!

Then Heather and I had dinner and drinks with some friends and then out to pick up Logan out in the country.  IMAG0078

So we ended the weekend with a nice crescent moon.

So our weekend was great, how was yours?

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Summer Fun Edition

1. Summer Fun

DSCN3927Here I am on a beach on Kauai. I have never seen so many beaches as what Hawaii has. How come they have so many and Oklahoma has so few? It isn’t fair is what I say.

2. Sleepy #good_night everybody #sleeping #dogsThis is our Maltese ShiTzu mix, Abby. She likes a pillow. It is funny how dogs are different. 3. A sign _DSC0777 Here is Heather giving me the hang loose sign. I can’t make the sign. I guess that means I can’t hang loose. I get pretty close though.4. Starts with B

The Bishop’s Wife by Mettie Ivie Harrison

You know I use the Goodreads App to note down books that I’m interested in. I might find lead on interesting books in various newspapers and magazines and from people I know. After a while I forget where I got the tip from. And when I’m looking for new books I start at the most recent and go back until I find one that the Tulsa library has that I can download without waiting on it. So I don’t know where I got the idea that I wanted to read “The Bishop’s Wife.”

The Angel Moroni

I downloaded the book and oh groan it looks like a “Woman’s Book” type murder mystery. The protagonist is Linda Wallheim who is the wife of a bishop. Not a Catholic Bishop of course (now that would be a story!) or an Episcopal or Methodist Bishop but a Mormon Bishop. So, uh, I said I spent much of my formative years in Utah and northern Arizona in heavily Mormon dominated areas and I have relatives who are Mormons. In fact I had a shop teacher in my high school in Arizona who was a Mormon Bishop. We, everybody, not just Mormons, called him Bishop Brown instead of Mr. Brown. So anyway that piqued my interest more than a little bit. So, it was like “What the heck, I’ll keep on reading this.”

So anyway this Bishop’s wife Linda Wallheim is one of those women who make the world go round. Maybe you know them regardless of what religion or belief you are. They are right in the mix of things at church, school, Cub Scouts, and any other activities. I recognize them because my mother was that way, and I’m married to one, and I have a sister who is one also. Like my MIL Nana says, “If you want anything done, you have to get an old broad to do it.” Not that my wife and sister are old broads. So anyway Linda (I feel like I’m old friends with her after reading the book), is here there and everywhere. Basically she is leaning on the church door every time it opens. As you can tell I fell in love the character.

Now the thing is, although a Mormon Bishop is a lay position (that means they do it for free) it is an official position of authority in the Mormon church. The Bishop’s wife is not an official position but she is the “Mother of the Ward unofficially. So Linda’s husband asks her to go check on people from time to time. So he asks her to go check on things with a couple families who are also close neighbors. Well she takes that assignment to heart, she checks in on them and then next thing you know she is rifling through garages and finding all sorts of suspicious things and pokes around their back yards. She also surreptitiously goes through their cell phone call histories and goes through their dressers. And then she goes back to her house and bakes cookies and brownies. Her other duty as the Bishop’s wife is that some of the women in the ward will talk to her when they don’t feel comfortable talking to the her husband. I tell you what she gets an ear full from some of these women. They tell her some things that would make Hannibal Lector flinch. It’s like wow!!

Another angle on Moroni

On the spiritual side of things Linda is of course a devout and faithful Mormon woman but she chafes under the all-male authority structure of the church and really gets steamed when her own husband tries to play the bishop card on her. She pretty much does what she wants and doesn’t tell him anything she doesn’t think he needs to know. She has two grown sons and one still in school and her relationship with them is a little prickly. This all makes Linda real to me.

And oh yes, murder’s are committed and the perps are found and my friend Linda is right in the mix. I am hoping that Mettie Ivie Harrison writes another one of these books. I loved it. This is her first Adult book after several young adult fantasy romances. She is a practicing Mormon and lives in Utah.

Weekend Reflections – Palace Theater – Hilo, Hawaii

Palace Theater Hilo 1 - adjust restyleOur guide on the big island of Hawaii took us by the Palace Theater in Hilo so I could take a few pictures. It is a grand structure and fortunately has been restored and is in use as a theater for both movies and musical performances. It was built in the 1920’s. It’s structural columns is redwood imported from the Pacific Northwest.  Land is expensive in Hawaii, even back then so to maximize the use of space stadium seating is used which makes for a spacious lobby located underneath the stadium. This beautiful building was quite a find. I am always happy to see old buildings maintained and in use. Palace Theater Hilo 2 Topaz Restyle Adjust

Skywatch Friday – Western Oklahoma Skies

Custer County Clouds - glow

Using Topaz Glow

Western Oklahoma is defined by its wide open spaces and big skies. It is like you can see the weather coming two days in advance. It seems flat until you actually spend time there. It is rolling with deep gullys for the creeks and rivers. The land makes you feel free and ready for anything.

Digital Art – Quonset Hut

Clinton Quonset Hut

I found a quonset hut in downtown Clinton, Oklahoma during a walk there a couple weeks ago. Of course wanting to improve on mother nature I ran it through Topaz Labs Impressions program and decided I liked their “Cave Dweller I” filter. It made the beautiful blue Oklahoma sky kind of this reddish, purplish, orange thing but hey I kind of like it that way. There is something about quonset huts that begs photographers to take their picture. They are so simple geometrically and they usually have the nice rusty patina to go along with them.
