Skywatch Friday – Donkeys, Drilling Rigs, and a Big Sky

Donkeys and Drilling Rigs edit

We visited family last weekend in western Oklahoma and went out to their ranch. The ranch had donkeys in addition to the usual cows, grass, drilling rigs, and a big sky. They guard the calves from coyotes and provide comedic relief. Those big ears just kill me. Nolan is the guy to the left and I don’t know who the names of the other two. All three are big beggers. My wife Heather is feeding them treats. They have already figured out that I don’t do that.

Donkeys versus Cows with the Lomography Oktomat Camera

Lomography Oktomat Camera

I got a new Lomography camera for my birthday from Nana, the world’s greatest MIL. This one is a 35mm film camera with eight lenses. It has adjustments at all. It has a fixed focus and there are no exposure adjustments, no flash, or even really a viewfinder and is certainly not wifi compatible. To take a pic you cock it and press the button and it operates a shutter on each of the lenses over the course of two seconds. Yep, pretty useless and I think that I’m going to love it.

I shot my first role in western Oklahoma during our weekend visit there. We were out visiting cows and donkeys.

Nolan x8

Nolan the donkey thought it pretty interesting until he figured I wasn’t going to feed it to him.

Classic Cows

The cows were not impressed either.

Nolan x8 vers 2

Then Nolan was like, “Here is my good side.” I got a little thumb action or something in there on one frame Nolan, sorry.

And then the cows wanted me to show their good side also. Good grief, can’t those critters get along.

Nana

Thanks for the new camera Nana! She is a MIL who has a good head on her, uh hm, shoulders?

Macro

This isn’t a true macro but the redbuds are blooming and so I’m using this.

Wheels

Truck Tires with Red Rims Lartigue Effect

I have a cheap digital camera that I absolutely love. One of its features is that it has no shutter. When you press the button the sensor gets scanned so what you get is the Lartigue Effect on moving objects caused by the scan. That is why these wheels look cartoonish. A coworker of mine was driving and he passed literally about forty vehicles before I got this take. I love cheap cameras!!

SUNP0031

Here is another example of the Lartigue effect of the same camera. Take a pic while weaving the camera down and you can make buildings shimmy.

Shiny

The Cox Convention Center here in Tulsa has shiny ceiling decorations.

Weather

Here in Oklahoma we really start watching the skies starting in April or so.

Favorite Sport

Cowboy's Cheerleaders

I’m a big Dallas Cowboys fan. So here is me with a couple of fellow Cowboys fans. I confess that I have posted this picture before, more than once, and I’ll post it again, probably several times.

I also like to run. I’m a pretty slow runner. Well, that is a lie. I would have to speed up quite a bit to be slow. I like the longer races, but not too long, 10K, 15K, and half marathons are my speed. I run with my camera and stop and take pictures. These are the Lululemon ladies who take their signs to various races in Tulsa. I love the smarty alecky tone of the signs.

Also, it is birthday time for me!!!! Thank you loyal readers. You put up with a lot is what I think. I appreciate all of you!! C’mon over, have some cake. The cheerleaders and the Lululemon Ladies will be here also.

Woodward Park – Springtime Pinhole Photography Holga 135 PC

Appeal to the Great Spirit at Tulsa's Woodward Park

I took both Holga 135 PC Pinhole Camera and my Canon Superzoom to Woodward Park on Sunday. So I have a few shots where I got similar images from both cameras.

IMG_8036

I had to fiddle with the exposure on the Canon for this. Of course with the pinhole camera there is no adjustment besides how long you manually open the shutter. The sculpture looks a lot better with the digital but the background is a mess. The pinhole camera “schmears” the background a little and IMHO gives the overall photo a little bit better look.

This bridge and rock stairs is kind of a draw in my opinion. I have to tell you that I like the film shot a bit better.

This shot across the water is markedly different. The water was a little ripply from the wind and the schmearing effect of the long shutter time gives the surface an ice rink kind of appearance. The people across the pond have a more mysterious appearance. The digital camera provides tons more clarity.

You know, what the heck. Can you go wrong with daffodils as a subject. I don’t think so.

So what do you think? Am I crazy for liking pinhole cameras?

People Watching on First Sunny Day at Woodward Park

IMG_8051

Saturday the flowers were blooming and the sun was shining at Woodward Park. It’s that time of year when Spring is Springing but the trees haven’t leafed out yet.

IMG_8045

The critters were out scrounging around.

IMG_8043

People were flocking to enjoy the sun and the quiet of the place.

IMG_8042

This couple went old school with a blanket and a dog. I wish we had dogs that could just lay down and be quiet in a public place. No way, especially with a bunch of squirrels that need a good barking and chase.

IMG_8041

I was totally jealous of this guy or gal. I’d never seen a hammock that closes up like this. What a great place to take a nap.

IMG_8036

Like I said, everybody was catching rays.

The Daffodils are Blooming at Woodward Park

The Daffodils are blooming at Woodward Park

IMG_8053

So everybody is out taking pictures of flowers and themselves and their loved ones. When I first got there there was a couple who set up a tripod with a video camera to make videos of themselves making out in amongst the daffodils. I was too flabbergasted to fulfill my journalistic duty to document such goings on in the buckle of the Bible belt. I’m sure they were from New York or California or some other godless place. Anybody out there done a video of themselves making out? We want to hear about it.

IMG_8018

I brought along my pinhole camera to take pics of the daffodils.

This is a double exposure using the pinhole camera. A Holga PC 135.

I can’t wait for the tulips to come up!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Bad Habit Edition

What IS that?

Untitled

This was a giveaway at a recent trade show. I don’t know have a clue who IPS is or what the PLH group is but I this giveaway looks more like something you would expect to find in a hospital or something. I think that it is supposed to be a collapsible water bottle. Would you drink something from this container? If your answer is yes, I am worried about you. My bottle went straight into the trash. (No I didn’t recycle, shame on me.)

Yum

20101122_14

At Lucky’s here in Tulsa, the burger’s are great but I don’t share the fries with truffle oil. So don’t embarrass yourself by asking if you can have one. Because the answer is no. Get your own, moocher!!

On the Road

Here the family is in Branson, Missouri last week on Spring Break. We had a great trip.

My previous boss got me hooked on Braum’s chocolate mix with Heath Bars. Yummm. I don’t share this either and yes it does hurt to ask.
