Destin, Florida – A long time ago

I am still scanning our old film photographs. I’m doing about four of five rolls a day. Doesn’t sound like much but it is,  especially the tagging and sorting so I can find these things out of my over 40,000 pics on Flickr. This morning I scanned pics from our beach trip to Florida back in October 2001. Great thing about a kid not in school yet is that you can take trips on off peak times.

PICT1094

Here is Logan the sand castle destroyer waiting for dad to build another target for him to stomp on.

PICT1089

He has always been a happy little bugger.  He especially likes the game of making a monkey out of dad.

PICT1083

Here he is with his mother. They have always had a special bond.

PICT1065

I had forgotten about this. We went to something called the Gulafarium and after watching the dolphins and seals do there thing we got our photo taken with one of the performers.

Do you like looking at old photos? I sure do.

Hiking the Twin Falls Trail on Maui

On our recent vacation to Hawaii one of our stops was the island of Maui. Maui was kind of frustrating. We signed up for a couple of excursions and neither one of them turned out the way we planned. We signed up for a snorkeling excursion that was scrubbed because of fuel pump problems with the boat that was supposed to take us but that may have been a good thing the locals told us because swells were kind of high and it would not have been a pleasant boat ride. So, okay plus we booked the excursion through the ship so they refunded everything 100%. I think we may have dodged a bullet, more to come on that in a later post.

DSCN3792

Brave smiles in the rain waiting for the hike to start.

The other excursion, we didn’t go through the ship, we signed up online through “Hike Maui” a local Maui outfit that does excursions independent of the ship but that coordinates the timing of some of their excursions with the schedule of the ship’s coming and goings. Well we signed up way ahead of time and the way it is that there are no refunds. The trouble was that after we signed up, Logan badly sprained his ankle and had to wear a big ole “boot.” A medieval torture contraption updated with hard plastic and numerous velcro straps.

DSCN3794

Pineapple growing wild. I thought indeed that was wild.

So anyway we thought we would go to the pickup spot at the designated time and talk to the guide. He looked pretty hesitant and talked about how muddy it would be and the rocks, boulders, and roots we would encounter and that we would have to walk through water a lot and climb and that we need to think of this as more of an adventure hike because it definitely a walk through a city park. Of course the more he talked about how tough it is the more I wanted to go. He capped it off by saying that if it were him, he would not go. Oh. So Heather said, Alan you go, we’ll stay here. I was reluctant but I got on the van.

DSCN3797

I forget what kind of berries these are but loved the color.

And then the guide went and talked to Heather and Logan some more then next thing I knew they got on the van also. The plan was that the guide thought there would be a couple of waterfalls that they could go to without going the rest of the trip. So off we went

DSCN3796

Heather and Logan going through the gate. The last I saw of them for hours and hours.

It seemed it was about a half hour drive or so to the parking lot through a lot of interesting landscape. Lots of cane sugar fields and other things to see. Our guide a very engaging young man gave us a running commentary of everything we saw. He talked about the heavy environmental cost of cane sugar growing and a lot of the natural history of area and good restaurants and bars to try. He was definitely environmentally minded and had a lot of insights.

DSCN3799

Did I mention that it was raining. Raining a lot.

We got to the parking lot and it started raining. Not too hard but pretty steady, the kind of steady that tells you that is not going to quit any time soon. We got out of the van and he passed out the lunches for later and off we went. He stopped quite often to point out a tree a tree, bush, or plant and explain what it was, whether it was indigenous to the island or where it came from.  He was a walking encyclopedia of plants. Many of them were edible and we’d try them. After a short while he pointed Heather and Logan to a gate and said that where they needed to go was that way.

DSCN3804

Old guys don’t bend down very well. This was a head bumper for me.

Right after Heather and Logan split off we entered the above kind of obstacle. There is no way that Logan could have done that with his bum ankle. I started worrying right away about them two because we were going to be gone for about three more hours and that is a long time to wait in the rain.

DSCN3806

But as we pressed on ahead we rain into a canal. Maui’s extensive canal system was installed starting in the 1870’s by the sugar can growers of the central valley to move water from the windward side of Maui where there is lots of rain to the valley where it is arid. It is an engineering marvel but very controversial locally. It was basically built by hand. It is known as the “East Maui Irrigation System.” I thought the whole thing is fascinating. The sugar industry dominated Hawaii for over a 100 years but no longer with the rise of international business and corn syrup sugar cane is a dying industry.

DSCN3808

See those rocks? They are pretty darn slick.

Anyways we journeyed on sometimes walking on two track roads or single track paths and often up streams like this. Those dang rocks were often pretty slippery and again I was glad Logan was along because that would not have worked out.  Our hike took us to five waterfalls and they were all beautiful. In some the water was deep enough for people to dive in. The scene was all very exotic for this guy from Oklahoma.

DSCN3807

We walked right up the stream for some of the way. It was not a sandy bottom either. It was those darned slick rocks.

The owners of the land leave the trails open to public which is exceedingly generous. There are no signs though and the trails are maze. I wouldn’t attempt to hike this without a guide unless I knew where I was going because it would be easy to get lost. Besides our guide kept up a walking commentary on everything we saw.

DSCN3809

Fallen trees and roots. I liked them better than the rocks.

More of the trails. It was a lot of hard work. Somewhere along here, or actually before this I lost my eyeglasses. That’s right I suddenly noticed they were gone and even though I backtracked a ways I couldn’t find them. Oh well.

DSCN3813

Hiking along the canal system. The sporting people got in the canal and went through the tunnel walking in the canal. I took the path the left around the tunnel.

DSCN3812

Another one of the waterfalls and pools. These are such a treasure and again very generous of the landowners to allow people to see them. No admission charge or anything.

DSCN3810

Another waterfall. I don’t think that it was this one but at one of them, a girl in another group showed up with one of those thong or g-string bikinis with her butt just out there for everybody to see, women, men, children everybody got a view whether they wanted to or not. I guess she was proud of it or something. Generally at these pools there was a lot of talking going on but everybody stopped talking while she paraded around. Our guide had a look of “seriously girl” on his face. I generally feel free to take a picture of everything I see in a public place but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m not a prude but “seriously girl?” is my attitude also. Of course maybe I am a prude. Later on in the trip on the island of Kauai I saw mothers of young children wearing the same type suit. Or lack of suit.

DSCN3819

And this was the next to last pool of the day, Twin Falls right by the road. By this time I was really concerned about Heather and Logan because the rain was still falling and there wasn’t any shelter. Still no bars on the cell phone, and no sign of them and this was where they were supposed to be hanging out.

DSCN3816

So I walked around and around and talked to people. Suddenly my cell phone found a bar up popped a some text’s. They were already back at the ship. With the rocks and stuff Logan could’t get down to the pond he supposed to go to so they went back to the parking lot and got a ride home from the same guide service but a different guide. I should have known that Heather was resourceful.

DSCN3815

Again, no idea what it is except that it is colorful.

So I was able to relax a little bit.

DSCN3817

The last pool of the day. The guide was talking about how almost everybody misses it even though it is right by the parking lot. Like I said, one can hike these trails by themselves but you will miss a lot. The trails are a maze and it is easy to get turned around. While I was looking for my crew some lady stopped me in the parking lot and told me should couldn’t find any of the falls even though she could hear the river. I pointed her down the trail to this pool. I hope that she made it.

All in all it was quite an adventure we had a great guide that paced things to make sure that everybody was keeping up, pointed out a lot of the local natural history to us and made things very interesting. I would recommend Hike Maui to anybody except I would say that this particular hike is a lot more strenuous than what they put on their web site. If I were to do it over again I would bring along some sturdy hiking sandals or something that could get soaked and muddy and cleaned off as well along with some tech clothes to wear in the rain because cotton is not what is needed.

Or if you want to go hike it yourself here is a map. Just look for the Twin Falls fruit stand on the road to Hana about thirty minutes or so east of Kahului, the major town in Maui.

Post Memorial Day Weekend Update

Monday morning I got up, not too darn early, and headed out to Floral Haven Cemetery in the Tulsa suburb of Broken Arrow. It is a huge cemetery and they have a program where a Veteran’s survivor can donate their loved one’s casket flag to be displayed on Memorial Day Weekend. There are over 3000 such flags put up and taken down every year by Boy Scouts and it makes for a great display.

_DSC0397

I love it so I went to take some pictures. It is very inspiring especially since so many graves are decorated by loved ones also.

_DSC0391

I love the idea of Memorial Day. A day where we remember those who went on before us and those who sacrificed themselves for our freedom.

Untitled

And then I went home and attended to my smoking duties. My mother-in-law Nana found a local butcher in south Tulsa, Perry’s, at 81st and Sheridan. It is a small place but boy do they sell good meat at very reasonable prices. This is the second time we tried them and the results were great.  The meat on the ribs pulled cleanly away from the bone  and the chicken was very tender.

Untitled

Heather was off running errands so Logan and I had to do some extensive sampling of the results . You know for quality control. We are all about quality control especially when it comes to food.

_DSC0416

So we packed up the food including a birthday cake Heather made and headed off to Nana’s house. We made quick work of the main course and then Logan did a great job of blowing out the candles on the cake. You see we are getting close to his birthday and you can never start these celebrations too early is my mottow.

_DSC0417

One puff is all it took so I guess that all his wishes will come through. I’m sure though that Super Bowl Championship for the Cowboys never occurred to him. I don’t know exactly where I went wrong raising the boy.

_DSC0421

Here he is with his Mom.

_DSC0408

And here is with his Nana.

_DSC0422

And here I am with Rascal the Pomeranian. What is going on here? Is somebody trying to tell me something?

Anyway, we had a great Memorial Day, what about you?

Saturday Catching Up

A lot has been going on lately and I need to tell you about it.

DSCN3621

My beautiful wife Heather has become certified as a Zumba instructor and is now teaching classes at our gym.  Check this link if you want to see a video demonstration of Zumba. (I am not embedding the video because so many of them have the auto start enabled which is annoying.) Anyways she works hard coming up with routines to make the class interesting for the customers. She is having a lot of fun at it.

_DSC0304

Son Logan just finished his Junior year at his new school. He did very well. As you may recall he has Asperger’s Syndrome and had been in a special needs school since second grade. This year he switched over to a college prep Christian School. The academic load zoomed up off the chart over what he was exposed to before and he responded well and has made all A’s and B’s. He has worked his butt off to do that and has learned a lot about academics.  Heather learned American Sign Language and I got a pretty good refresher in Geometry and Biology. Geometry has changed much in the last 44 years but Biology has zoomed forward a bunch.

I had to bite my tongue in biology on the whole Creation Science vs Evolution thing, because it is a Christian school,  and I told him before he got into it that his Dad was a Christian and also a die hard evolutionist and further I didn’t see any contradiction between the two. I also told him that he was old enough to decide for himself what he wanted to believe. Hopefully I haven’t scarred the poor child or caused him to get a bad grade. I have a feeling that I may have made it on a few prayer lists as well. No harm in that though.

DSCN3689

And let me see, in my new job as Director of Project Development I actually had somebody call up and offer me a ticket to the Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship here in Tulsa that past week. After spending 21 year entertaining and hustling drinks for other people it felt strange to be on the other side again but I made the most of it. We sat behind a scouting team from the Baltimore Orioles. They had radar guns, complicated charts and nice haircuts. The guy on the far right had a big old giant World Series ring on his finger also. I don’t know who he is but when he stood up I could see that he was big, real big. It was all very cool. And you know something college baseball is good although I still don’t like the “ping” of the bats instead of crack of a wood bad. But hey, I’ll get over it.

_DSC0379

And last Sunday Heather and I went to the Hopjam festival sponsored by Hanson. It was great. Great music and great beer. What a combination.

Also, we are fixing to (as we say in Oklahoma) on our family vacation. All you burglars out there don’t get too excited because we have a full time house/pet sitter.  I’m going to be taking a digital break so I won’t be posting for about a week and a half probably starting late next week. I’m a host of the Skywatch Friday meme that comes out on Thursdays and I have already prepared the next two week’s posts. I hope that I didn’t screw up the linky’s or the posts or anything because there won’t be much I can do it about it.

Anyway, what is new with you?

Mother’s Day 2015

a

Mom

Here is my Mother, taking a nap on bus (or maybe a train, I wasn’t there) speeding through her beloved Ireland way back when. She has been gone a long time and I never stop missing her.

PICT0177

Here she is with her grandson Logan. I think they liked each other.

Ellen Mom Dana at Beach

And this is my mother way back in the 70’s on Galveston beach. The woman to the right taking the picture is my sister who has three daughters of her own now (and two grandkids)  including the little cutie holding our Mother’s hand. That little cutie has a brand new baby of her own this year and is celebrating her very first Mother’s Day.

DSCN2583

And this is my Mother-in-Law Nana. She is quite a stylish Nana.

IMG_0646

And among her many skills is that she is very competitive at board games.

DSCN1193[1]

And here is my wife, Heather, mother to our son Logan. Heather is very special to me. I love her very much. She is also full of surprises. For one thing she got certified as a Zumba instructor this year so now she is teaching classes. Once she decides she is going to do something, it gets done. If you want to help fine, if not, get out of the way!

IMG_0726

Happy Mother’s Day Babe.

And Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers in the world. Where would be without them?

Studio Recital – Logan Sings “The Pirate King”

Logan has been taking voice lessons for some time and the studio where he takes them has recitals every now and then and it is pretty cool. They start with the youngest and move to the oldest. All the kids are dressed up and groomed by their mothers and wear their best clothes. The parents and siblings and maybe grandparents are there with cameras at the ready. It is a great thing to see. It moves pretty quickly especially at first as the songs that are sung or music that is played by the smalls is pretty short and gets longer and more complex as the kids get older. I feel for some of the kids who are scared to death up there and love the few who not only love their time in the spotlight but have spent some time and effort to not only perform their art but sell it also. One young lady sang a broadway tune with not only her voice but with everything she had, facial expressions, body language, gestures, and appeared to enjoy every second of it. She was a hit. A couple of the young gentlemen playing the piano were very accomplished and a a delight to hear.

Our son was one of those dressed and groomed by his mother. He sang “The Pirate King” from the Pirates of Penzance.

And I was like, “Where did that voice come from?” I knew that he had a good voice but this is like really deep. I guess that he continues to grow up.

I never did a recital. I couldn’t do a recital, neither did my brother. My sister and fellow blogger Ellen was a tap dancer and I went to a few of her recitals. She danced well. She should, she practiced a lot. I still remember her record: “Shuffle ball chain, shuffle ball chain, heel toe, heel toe, heel toe, step.” She could also sing. I think she was in the choir in high school. At least someone in the family could sing and dance!

The Gum Story in American Sign Language

Son at his new school had to take a foreign language and he ended up taking American Sign Language. Boy was that a chore. He has worked very hard and so has his mother. We are nearing the end of the year (Yahoo!!) and he had to learn how to do “The Gum Story”. I thought he did pretty good at it (not like I would know) but he agreed to let me film him doing it.

I thought he was going to translate while he did it but he didn’t and he is a one take and done kind of guy. Below is a translation of the Gum Story.

preview[1]

We are proud of Logan of his hard work in the Signing Class and the other courses he has taken this year.

I took two years of Spanish and don’t have much to show for it. What about you? Do you know more than one language?

Metro Christian Academy’s Production of Guys and Dolls

IMG_20150416_182548

Logan’s school put on a production of Guys and Dolls this past weekend.

IMG_20150417_175113

Son Logan had a small part and even the guys with the small part have to get makeup.

IMG_20150417_175942

Complete with the head tilted up and down and side to side. No complaining either. Or rather you can go ahead and complain but nobody is listening to you.

IMG_20150417_180508

And then Mom ties your tie and makes sure that your shirt is tucked in.

IMG_20150417_212253

It’s showtime!!

_DSC0044

Your time on the stage kid!

_DSC0007

And then the girls in the 1940’s style dresses show up and steal it away from you. That’s life kid.

_DSC0041

And then we get more girls.

_DSC0046

And then we get the Salvation Army. This is a Christian School production after all.

_DSC0033

And then the guys come out. You know how guys are, sinning one minute.

Guys and Dolls 4

Singing in church the next.

Guys and Dolls 6

And then we get the dancing girls with the twirly dresses. There was a whole stage of them. Too many heads showed up on the photo so I cropped all but this one girl out. You get the idea. The dresses were sewn by the moms supervised by one who had a mathematical background who figured out a precise pattern for each girl (no I am not kidding.) You can tell she had the right equations.  Pretty amazing the moms in this show. Without them, not much would have happened.

Guys and Dolls 8

The kids gave it their all. They worked hard for weeks, and so did the moms and the teachers. It was exhausting.

Guys and Dolls - Hot Box Girls 1

The result was great.

_DSC0048

Here is our gentle giant of a sun next to his Nana and Mom. Doesn’t he look great in a double breasted suit?

Untitled

And then on to the afterparty, food, soft drinks, and a swimming pool. Nothing better than that for teenagers. A nice big firepit for making smores and then a big downpour showed up putting a damper on the smores until one of them grabbed a big table umbrella. That’s problem solving I think. What do you think.

They’ll be talking about this production for years.

Picking up the Pace a Little

IMG_1038

Last Saturday Logan and I headed up to Ramona to visit the nice folks at All-Star Therapy Group for Logan’s horseback riding session. The weather was  kind of blah so Logan rode inside. I don’t really mind because I like seeing the goings on in the arena and seeing what the other kids and their parents are doing along with the staff and volunteers. There is never a dull moment but photographically it is difficult with lighting and all. I have a new Ipod Touch, it is my third. I love those little devices and go through them. This one has a time lapse photography function so I made this five second video of Logan riding Cisco, round and round.

And while I’m picking on Logan I’ll go ahead and show this time lapse of him unloading the dishwasher.  I’m one of those dishwasher loading nerds who prides himself on loading the dishwasher in an efficient manner and part of my plan in loading is how I am going to unload it. He doesn’t really share my enthusiasm for such things, which is a good sign if I think about it. Anyway, I used my new toy to do a time lapse of him unloading the dishwasher.

I’ll keep you posted on the progress we make, or don’t make.
