Our World – Tulsa State Fair Midway

It’s the time for State and County Fairs, have you been to one yet this year?

02_00A

I took my Diana Mini toy film camera to the midway this year. The midway is legalized madness. Lots of people, bright lights, the rides, the games of skill, the fair food.  Who can explain it all?

The Diana Mini has a half frame mode where you get two photographs on one frame. It’s kind of fun to see what the pairing are. I like the way the Ferris Wheel turned out. To me the Ferris wheel is the king of the midway. If you don’t have one of those, you don’t have a midway.

I was just walking around shooting from the waist. It’s kind of hit or miss actually. There is a world of difference between raising a camera to your eye and just shooting from the waist. The EMT crew above had somebody on the gurney. I don’t know what the story is.

The carousel and a small roller coaster were right next to each other.

The not very well kept secret of the midway is that the people are the main attraction. Lots of people make fun of “Fair People” and I don’t know why. I mean if you know what a fair person looks like, then you are one also, right?

The food is outrageous. The donut burger is a burger with donuts used as the buns. How about deep fried Kool-Aid. Why, probably the same reason that I eat sea urchin sushi. Sure it tastes good but most of all I like seeing everybody’s else’s reaction when I eat it.

Our World – Seattle’s Pike Place Market

04_26

If you go to Seattle and you can only do one thing you have to go to the Pike Place Market downtown near the waterfront. Bustling is the word. It is the people watchers place to be. Yep its a tourist place, but if you are tourist, go for it.

Sights and Sounds everywhere. Not just the fish sellers but flower, fruit, vegetable, stands as well. Be sure and take your camera.

These are pictures from my Lomography Mini 35mm film camera.

The Ladies of Utica Square

I had some time to kill waiting for a prescription at a Utica Square shopping center.

So I took my strange looking Kodak Brownie loaded with the medium format 120 film,

and shot some old school black and white photographs. Taking old school pics is kind of fun but you know really if I had a digital camera I would have reshot all of these pics to minimize cars, strange reflections, glare and such. Old school though doesn’t give you that immediate feedback you have to turn the film in and wait. And nobody offers one hour processing on 120 film. Still, I love the pics despite the many flaws, or because of all the flaws.

(My favorite)

It was mid morning and me and these ladies had the run of the place.

Weekend in Black and White – First Roll

My Mother-in-Law recently gave me one of my late Father-in-Law’s cameras. A Kodak Brownie Hawkeye.

I took it, cleaned it up and put a roll of film in it, and much to my delight it works.

So these are old school black and white photographs. I took these photographs at a  local Harley Davidson dealership here in Tulsa.

I found a local lab that sells and processes the 120 film that the camera uses. Now that I have the first roll behind me I’m going to go take some more. Got any ideas for me for subjects?

Signs, Signs – Central Library

I’m a big fan of libraries. Tulsa has an excellent system of libraries scattered all over the City and County of Tulsa.
Central Library Sign

Two views of the sign at the west door for Central Library of the Tulsa City County Library System.

Central Library Sign 2

You’ll find me at lunch at the library two or three times a week using their free wifi to play Scrabble and Words with Friends on my ipod or actually checking out books. I’ve been doing that for about 20 years now.

My fellow patrons are in doing their homework, listening to music, reading newspapers and magazines. For some, they are getting a respite from the cold. Everybody is treated with respect. I love libraries.
