I hate to admit but I’m a cake decorating fan. Tulsa hosts the Grand National Wedding Cake Competition, hosted by the Food Network’s Kerry Vincent is held in Tulsa during the Tulsa State Fair and I am addicted to it. The creations are fantastic. So anyway I went again this year, the winners haven’t been announced but I think they are all the “The Best.”

That is it for this week’s edition. Join in!!!!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Thorncrown Chapel – Eureka Springs, Arkansas

IMG_9672_1_3_Detail

During our recent outing to Eureka Springs Heather and I visited Thorncrown Chapel. Architect E. Fay Jones little jewel in woods.

IMG_9687_6_8_Detail

It’s footprint is 24 by 60 feet and is 48 feet high. It is modeled after the much larger Sainte Chappelle Church in Paris. The architect E. Fay Jones said that Thorncrown was “Ozark Gothic.”

IMG_9681_0_2_Detail

It may be the most remarkable structure I have been in. It is so full of light and is light and airy. I I don’t see how it even keeps itself supported. The structure is built entirely out of wood, glass, and stone.  You can read more about it and see some spectacular photographs on Thorncrown’s Website.

IMG_20140921_131940

The chapel gets lots of visitors but everybody is very quiet inside the building plus they quite politely and calmly ask people to sit down while they are looking around and taking photographs.

IMG_9690_89_1_Detail

I loved how the design is kept open by the absence of an altar. Note though the cross standing outside the structure and the rock ledge looks like an altar to me. The chapel fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Jones specified that no single component could be bigger than what two men could carry through the woods to the site. The trusses and such were built on site the lumber that was carried to it.

IMG_20140921_131954

I guess that I am turning into a fan of E. Fay Jones. Just a year ago I visited his Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel at Powell Gardens near Kansas City, Missouri. It was another structure that blew me away.

Google has built a 3D model of the building. You have to play around with a little bit. It gives a better idea of what it looks like in its setting.

Eureka Springs Getaway

Skywatch Friday – Neighborhood Sky

#sunset in the neighborhood #best_skyshots #tulsa #oklahoma #igersok

The family went out to eat this weekend. When we got home the sky was ablaze.

And I cheated a little bit. The free generic android phone I use has an in-camera HDR function and I amped it up a little more with my favorite camera app Snapseed. Plus a car turned down the street at just the right time to add an exclamation mark to the whole thing. And then I posted it to Instagram and Facebook. So I’m a multiple non-repentant cheater.

Have you ever cheated? Tell me about it. I promise not to tell anybody but my closest thousand friends. Confession is good for you.

Pondering on Upselling

Upselling (sometimes “up-selling“) is a sales technique whereby a seller induces the customer to purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add-ons in an attempt to make a more profitable sale. Upselling usually involves marketing more profitable services or products but can be simply exposing the customer to other options that were perhaps not considered. Upselling implies selling something that is more profitable or otherwise preferable for the seller instead of, or in addition to,[1] the original sale.

A sales strategy where the seller will provide opportunities to purchase related products or services, often for the sole purpose of making a larger sale.

I got to thinking. In the three years I have owned my little Kia Soul, nobody has tried to “Upsell” me on anything. Some of my coworkers are actually embarrassed for me. Almost all of the kids at my son’s high school drive bigger and faster cars than me.

When I take it to the car wash though I get charged extra because it is a “plus sized SUV.” I love that car wash! What salesmanship!!!

I guess that I am a lot more glad than sad about that. I don’t miss it.

What about you? You want to supersize those fries?

Ruby Tuesday – Cousins at the Zoo

IMG_9297

This past summer son and I went to Idaho Falls to see my Dad. Sister Ellen and her husband Irv and their grandson Mr. Beans drove up from Colorado Springs and so we all met up and had a good time. Above is son Logan and his cousin Mr. Beans in a red archway at the local Zoo in Idaho Falls, Tautphaus Park Zoo.

Here is a little bit better shot.

IMG_9220

Oh well, it was kind of a shadowy face kind of sun while we were there.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday – Stripes Edition

I’m doing another installment of Ashley’s Sisk’s Scavenger Hunt Sunday where she provides a list of prompts and then you try to take photos that match the prompts. So without further ado, lets get to it.

Stripes

Logan and Cisco at #allstartherapy #therapeutichorsebackriding #horses #igersok #myoklahoma

Son Logan spends a half hour a week or so participating in therapeutic horseback riding at All-Star Threrapy Group. It helps him with his core strength and also keeps him engaged as a horse needs a leader. He has been doing it for a few years now and really enjoys it. The people who work there including the many volunteers really have a heart for their clients. The guy in the stripes is Bob who owns and runs the place.

Packed

IMG_5932

This is the family car stuffed coming back from vacation at Gulf Shores. Funny thing about trips. Outbound everything fits really nice and compact. Coming back it is a lot looser. I think it has to do with the second law of thermodynamics. You know, in a closed system, entropy increases. You know Q divided by T and all that. For you non Chemical Engineers out there it just means that when it is time to get home you just throw everything in and shut the door the best way you can and go.

Travel

IMG_20140826_144105

I’ve been spending way too much time in airports lately including the world’s worst airport DFW in Dallas. It is a mish mash added onto mess. However one of the terminals had a bunch of rocking chairs with handy electric outlets. So I passed the time rocking and clicking my fellow travellers.

Too Cute

IMG_6182

Anything cuter than a lamb? And they …. Forget it. I don’t want to get everybody riled up so I won’t say it. It involved mint jelly also but I don’t want to offend anybody’s sensibilities too much.

Favorite

53510006

This is from a few years back at Gulf Shores, Alabama. Our favorite place to vacation. Son Logan is almost a fish, a very good swimmer (but not as good as he thinks he is so we watch him like a hawk!) We really enjoy hanging out in the ocean.
