Fall Foliage at Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum

_DSC0550

Sunday afternoon, after setting the DVR for the Dallas Cowboys game, son Logan and I headed off for an outing at Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum of Art. I wasn’t interested in the art on this trip as I was the gardens of museum. They have spectacular gardens and there is something to see in them all seasons. Thanks to Logan’s grandmother, my MIL, who buys us a family membership every year, we get to go see Philbrook a lot.

First up they had a Special Exhibit called “Museum Confidential” that was about, among other things, why some works that museums have in the their collections never get exhibited. They had a pretty dense display of Philbrook owned art that never gets displayed. A lot of it is funny looking, or worn out, or they are not sure exactly who painted it (provenance that is called). I thought it quite interesting. My theory is that a lot of stuff is donated and they don’t know what to do with it. My dad was involved in a museum in Idaho and he talked about all the worthless stuff people donated just to get a tax deduction.

Anyway, we checked the exhibit out in a couple minutes an then toured the rest of the three floors in about 15 minutes. It doesn’t take me long. I have been to the museum dozens of times and I just like looking at the stuff I like and it is like saying hello to old friends and I never get tired of the collection, and every once in a while I notice something new or rather, noticed something that has been there all along. So, after our whirlwind tour we headed out for the gardens.

The focal point of the gardens is the tempietto. The money shot is the tempietto reflected in the pond. I wonder how many photos have been taken of it over the years. I think it has led to an imbalance of photons in this world that is causing many of our current problems. So I know that it is somewhat of a cliche but you know I have been clicking away for years and will keep on clicking. I think the scene is gorgeous.

And then we went off. I found this foliage right next to the employee parking lot. I’ll take it.

Some more Fall color.

By now you have figured out that I have a thing for curved walkways that go underneath colorful trees.

And on our way out, I stop for another shot of the tempietto. I like all the purply colors in this scene and how the colors are reflected in the pond. I also love all the textures in the scene. I am not bragging about the photo, I love the what my eye sees and what is weakly captured by the camera.

If you plan on visiting Philbrook check their website. They have lots going on including both big special exhibits and smaller. Note that they have a monthly event called Second Saturday where the museum doesn’t charge admission and they have all sorts of activities for all ages. it is quite fun and is sponsored by my employer.

They are also very photo friendly. You can take photos of almost anything in their permanent collection. Just don’t use flash and don’t be a pain to your fellow guests. Special exhibits are sometimes different because they bring in art from other museums and private collections and sometimes there are restrictions. If you have any questions, just ask the people at the front desk. They are very friendly, well trained and can answer all your questions.

Skywatch Friday – Autumn is Coming Edition

20170913-071818-7

Every morning I drive by this greenbelt. At Spring and Fall the sun rises just perfectly.

"

My “cousin-in-law” Cheri Lu took this photo at her family’s ranch in Western Oklahoma. I love the big skies out there. Even with power lines.

Another scene from the bike ride Heather and I took last weekend. Autumn is Oklahoma’s best season as far as I am concerned. It is really long period of warm days and cool nights. It is time for backyard fires and camping.

Skywatch Friday – A Sunset From the Old Office

ONEOK Paza Sunset Topaz Adjust

It’s October and the sun is getting lower so when I left my office I took the elevator up to the 17th floor to my old office. (Which is still empty by the way!!! After almost two years!!!) And I took this photo. If you look not too hard you will see a reflection of my bright red camera. I thought about knocking the window out so I could take the pic without the reflection but I decided not to do so. Maybe next time, but probably not.

The weather is getting milder, the temperatures cooler, and the humidity lower. Pretty soon the leaves will start changing and the various Fall races that I love will happen. Yep, things are looking up.

Shadow Shot Sunday – Downtown Tulsa Shadows

DSCN6861

Autumn is here and some of the trees are changing colors. We are several weeks behind friends in Colorado and elsewhere higher and further north.

DSCN6830

There is still lots of green. I love this ramada at Guthrie Green just north of downtown. Nice and shady in the summer and sunny in the winter when all the leaves fall off.

Our downtown Library is reopening after a three year renovation. I’ll be going there later today to check it out. Solar heating, rainwater collection systems, revamped heating and air,  a 3D printer, enhanced technology. I haven’t heard anything about books. Do libraries still have books? You can depend on me to let you know.

I’m linking with Shadow Shot Sunday (even though it is Saturday). Sunday will be here soon enough.

Our World – My Favorite Street

Cherry Street Fall Neighborhood

Most mornings after I go to the gym I head up to the Panera on Cherry Street for a bagel, coffee, and the morning newspaper. Afterwards I drive past this street on my way to work. Friday I looped back around to take a pic. It was pretty bright with the morning sun on the autumn leaves. Me, being me, couldn’t leave well enough alone so I ran the photo through Topaz Impressions backed off about 60%. The photo quite a bit off level and after correcting it, I I undid the correction.  I love all those tall trees right on the street.

So that was Friday, Saturday was cold and windy and I bet many of those leaves are down on the street now.

Downtown Tulsa Sun, Shadows, and Color

Downtown Fall Color Impressions Van Gogh II 55pct

True confessions I used Topaz Impressions Van Gogh Filter on this backed off to 55%

I love the light this time of year and the Fall color. I found a tree still somewhat conflicted about Autumn. I love the conflict and I also love how the sun and shadows work together. Autumn is my favorite time of year.

Through My Lens – A Visit to Carmichael’s Pumpkin Patch

_DSC0116

Sunday afternoon the family traveled from Tulsa down to the country outside of Bixby to Carmichael’s Pumpkin Patch to pick out the family pumpkins for Fall.

_DSC0144

We saw some greedy goats.

_DSC0126

And some cute little goats. At what point do they turn into shameless beggars?

_DSC0123

We saw a lonely, humiliated chicken sharing its space with a rabbit and a tiny little pumpkin.

_DSC0138

And a pot bellied pig looking a little frazzled trying to take care of her youngins. (Youngin is a word in Oklahoma just in case you are wondering. Other words have disappeared. Nobody knows what a Democrat is here any more. Except for some old timers who don’t really want to talk about it too much.

_DSC0131

And we saw  brahma cow. aaaa _DSC0127

And a few llamas.

_DSC0110

And some youngins making a little selfie nest in the pumpkins. Aren’t they cute. I wasn’t the only one taking pics of them making a selfie. Look at the lady across the way.

_DSC0120

Oh yeah, we did find a couple of pumpkins!!!

Fall is Here

Raining

It doesn’t look like it but it is raining and cool this morning. I think Fall is falling. It is about time. We had a pretty mild summer as summers go here in Tulsa but I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures. Autumn is Tulsa’s best season and it lasts a long time.

Harbinger of Autumn

Cottonwood Tree

Oxley Nature Center – Tulsa, Oklahoma Topaz Impressions

It is getting to be late September. Pretty soon the weather will break and Tulsa’s long wonderful Fall season will be upon us. You can already tell that things are changing. Although still hot, the sun is a little lower. The mornings are a little cooler. The sky gets a little bluer. There is something subtle about a cottonwood tree that heralds the coming of Fall. I don’t know if is a subtle change in the color of its leaves or just what, maybe my imagination, but I can tell that things are changing.

How can you tell that the seasons are changing?
