Nobody naps as hard or as peacefully as our Lizzy the cat. She loves taking naps on the back of our sofa. Sometimes she’ll use one of the dog beds.
Sorry for the bad photo!
I walked into our family room the other day and all three critters were staring at me. What were they up to? I never figured it out. From left to right is Kodi the Pomeranian, Lizzy the Cat, and Sadie the terrier.
I’m a bad efeeder owner. I let the feeder run out of food and just plain forgot about it. I decided to take it down, clean it out and store it for a little while. While checking the app, the only bird that showed up the last several weeks was this lonely, hungry male cardinal. Boy did I feel bad. It’s only an 11 second video.
I’m linking with Eileen’s Saturday’s Critters. Go check it out, lots of animal lovers and great photobloggers link up with her.
It has been raining a lot in Tulsa lately. It makes the trails muddy and I don’t want to damage them so I go places with more sustainable trails. Fortunately Ray Harral Nature Center in the Tulsa suburb of Broken Arrow has asphalt paved trails so that is one of my go to’s when I get the yen to go hiking when things are muddy.
I found this male northern cardinal. I brought my good camera and he was nice enough to sit still while I got his photo. I saw glimpses of other birds but didn’t get their photos.
Found this young squirrel playing coy with me.
I used the Merlin App to track who else was around. I got a glimpse of a red-eyed vireo. The Fish Crow called loudly as did the Carolina Wren.
I spotted this painted rock in one of the pollinator gardens at the center. I put it in my pocket and carried it around during my hike and then put it in a different pollinator plot not very far from where I found it. I used to love making painted rocks and hiding them. I am going to get some paint and sealer and try again. I’m not much of an artist and I settled on a yellow sunburst on a blue background. A friend of mine mocked me saying that Walmart was going to sue me for infringing on their logo.
When I first started I hid them way too well and nobody was finding them. I guess from my geocaching background. So I started putting them in more visible places and that worked out better.
A bunny wandered into range in my backyard trailcam.
And a brown thrasher.
Yesterday we got a reprieve from the rain so son and I mowed the yard. I mowed the front as he caught up on his beauty sleep. I trimmed the front and backyards. My 35 year old cord electric trimmer finally quit a couple weeks ago and I got a nice battery powered model to replace it. Much more powerful and convenient than dragging a cord around all over the place.
So son mowed the backyard. He likes to be creative in his patterns. Used to drive me crazy cuz of all the mohawks he left but now he is still creative yet no more mohawks. (Mohawks are unmowed strips of grass that look kind of like a Mowhawk haircut.) I think he got tired of mowing the yard twice.
It got hot, yesterday, here I am all cleaned up doing my zombie walk in the 105F heat. (I don’t think it got to 105 but it was still hot.)
Don’t forget to cheer for the Oklahoma Thunder Sunday evening when they battle the Indiana Pacers in the final game of the NBA Championship!
I am linking with Eileen’s Saturday’s Critters. Check it out. Lots of talented photographers participate.
The weather has been both warm and cold lately. Kodi loves laying in the sun on cold sunny days. Talk about a look of bliss on his face.
We were wondering how he would do with snow and he loves it. Doesn’t bother him a bit.
So I’m loving my camera bird feeder. The squirrels love it to so I chase them off whenever I can. This past week I had house sparrows, carolina chickadees, house finches, and both sexes of cardinals. I found a new feature on the camera that I have used. I can talk to the squirrels that at time overwhelm it. I yell at them to “Git out you dang squirrels” and the run off. It also has an alarm, I can make it go off from my phone and that really gets them away.
Them squirrels are raiders. Here is a shaky video of one of them who took the top off of a bird feeder and was just helping himself.
That’s a wrap for this week. Stay warm everyone. I’ll be watching the NFL playoffs this week.
I visited with my knee surgeon yesterday and I am on for the middle of next month. After the Superbowl though.
Big news for me this week is that I bought an internet connected, solar powered, birdcam and got it installed in the backyard.
It is pretty easy to install and set up. Given the time of year I haven’t had too many customers yet. A couple of squirrels, a Carolina Wren, and female Northern Cardinal. I’ve had more squirrels but I throw snowballs at them if I see them.
They come in short videos about ten seconds long. I used an iphone app to stitch them together and then uploaded to youtube. It is only 12 seconds long.
Lizzy allowed me to take her portrait. She is the sweetest cat we’ve ever had.
And then she winked at me. I don’t know what is up with that.
I filled up all the feeders and this blue jay helped himself to a peanut.
The squirrels helped themselves to another feeder with sunflower seeds in it.
I got Kodi patrolling the perimeter.
And three dove on the ground.
After it snowed Kodi spent some time out in it. He seemed to like it.

I went on a hike at Ray Harral Nature Center. Most of the critters were elusive. This fat little guy watched me while I walked by as he ate his lunch.
I could hear birds but didn’t see them except for glimpses of the cardinal.
I still haven’t seen a Carolina Wren in real life. I don’t add birds to my life list unless I see them and get a photograph. I think I am up to eight birds on my list. Don’t laugh at me.
I went on a walk along the Arkansas River and saw these. I think they are seagulls.
That’s a wrap. I’m wishing everyone and their families a Happy and Healthy New Years.
Big excitement this week is that my trailcam captured a raccoon very early Monday morning. I don’t know if it is a Rocky or a Racquel. If you have any clues let me know.
And a short ten second video. I haven’t seen him since so I guess he was not impressed with what we had on offer on the patio which was nothing.
Also exciting is that Rascal our pomeranian graduated from physical therapy. He got injured in November and has been getting acupuncture and PT since then. The progress really has been remarkable. I thought we would never be able to walk him again but now we do it every day. Just a mile or so because he is still building up strength and stamina. The staff posed him in a graduation cap and he loved it. He is such a diva.
I saw Lizzie grooming herself the other day and getting big mouthfuls of fur so Heather got out the grooming tool. Lizzie loved it. We are trying to avoid hairballs.
A robin all puffed up in this fuzzy shot to try and keep warm.
A bird in our birdbath.
A female cardinal at the feeder.
And a bright colored male.
And both of them in this ten second video.
That’s about it for critterworld in our neck of the woods. I’m linking with Eileen’s Saturday’s Critters. Come join in!!
We have our first storm of the winter coming. On Ground Hogs Day! Here in Oklahoma we panic at the first thought of ice and snow. Everybody hits the grocery stores for bread and milk.
This is from my backyard weather station. It is remarkable that you can tell to the minute when the front hit. At 8:05 PM last night. The temperature and the humidity dropped like a rock. It is supposed to be sporadic rain/sleet/snow until this evening and then the snow will hit. Our weathercasters live for this stuff. The storm chasers are out and about in their cars driving on the ice, looking for stop signs with icicles flags blowing in the wind. Yep, weather is a major spectator sport in Oklahoma.
