Saturday’s Critters – June 1, 2024 Edition

IMG_3410

I went on a bike ride one day and I saw this Eagle fishing out in the middle of the Arkansas River here in Tulsa.

I saw this white pelican as well. There were not as many as there has been in the recent past.

IMG_3401

Nearby I saw this great egret also fishing.

IMG_3400

And a great blue heron.

A target of opportunity a short while later. This northern mockingbird landing on this wire right in front of me.

At Lafortune Park on a different day I came across this blue jay who sat still while I took his photo.

At home this week I got out of my car and saw this black swallowtail butterfly enjoying my wife’s purple coneflowers. People on instagram said “great job.” I just happened to be there, praise the butterfly.

Here’s a video of the butterfly.

Here is out little Pomeranian, Kodi. He is a bit much to handle these days. He won’t let me pick him up or even clip a leash on him. He’s a little dog with big feelings. And a bit wild eyed especially with this filter I put on his photo.

Now the squirrels have attitude. They don’t move when you tell them to do so. It’s like they say, you move, after you refill the feeder.

Most of our robins are down on the ground. This guy got up on the rooftop and sang for a while. I guess he is looking for love.

These grackles are just taking over!! At least they fly off when you tell them to.

My wife and I went on a hike the other day and came across this doe and her yearling. The young’in was jumpy, mom seed chill. They paralleled us on the trail for quite a ways.

Water Creatures and More

I went on a bike ride the other day and I packed my elderly superzoom along and I saw a few things.

IMG_3078

A great blue heron doing one of those twisty turny things with their neck. I wonder if they ever accidentally tie their neck in a knot?

IMG_3072

And another one. They sure are patient fishers. They are also very sensitive to their surroundings. I’ve learned to move slowly even when they are at quite a distance.

IMG_3080

Anda the ubiquitous geese. They are everywhere it seems.

IMG_3071

And some basking slider turtles.

And the latest water critter, Kodi in my MIL’s swimming pool. A couple weeks ago he was there with us on the deck and he just jumped in like he knew what he was doing. We are trying to teach how to get out of the pool safely. He loves the water.

Meet Fanny, my MIL’s latest pool decoration. She has solar cells and at night glows in the dark. Pretty cool stuff.

And another flamingo decoration for the pool area.

I was hiking the other day and come across this critter. I haven’t figured out what it is yet.

And it is baby bunny season now and this one hangs out on the patio. Fortunately for it, Kodi barely gives it a glance but we still watch him.

Saturday’s Critters – Gilbert, the Man, the Legend

I went on a hike last week on Turkey Mountain starting from the YMCA on the northwest side of the mountain. Best deal ever for Y members, free parking, not crowded, restrooms, water and everything else you need.

I went on my hike and as I got back to the Y I saw some wild turkeys. A tom and two hens. I posted it on instagram and facebook and a person I know with Y said the strutting tom was named Gilbert by the staff.

I only had my phone with me and he was keeping his distance so these are the best photos I could get.

In other news, our Pomeranian puppy, Kodi, is really doing well at puppy school. He’s fearless and will try anything, eager to please and scary smart. I don’t know who is training who sometimes.

As you can tell, he’s our baby now.

White Pelicans and More on the RiverParks Trails

I went on a bike ride the other day on Tulsa’s RiverParks trails. I generally like to take one of my better cameras on the rides in hopes of capturing some critters.

IMG_2935

I saw a great blue heron and took a photo through the vegetation along the shoreline.

Later on, on I came across this rookery of American White Pelicans on a sandbar out on the river.

IMG_2944

There were a bunch of them and they were very skittish as I walked around trying to get a photo through the trees and brush so I didn’t try and work my way to the riverbank to get better photos. I figured they would all split if I tried that.

IMG_2943

So I moved back and forth trying to see what I could do. These are not too bad.

IMG_2942

They always seem to be on the wrong side of the river from me but this time they were right by me.

Here is a photo of me from my go pro clone camera on my bike. I guess I could have tried to not be so bright and yellow.

And by the way, I saw more evidence of beavers along the river.

And now on the home front. This is Lizzie the Kitten. She is no longer a kitten but she is still very sweet.

And earlier this week it was National Puppy Day. I celebrated by chasing our Pomeranian puppy Kodi around the house with a broom. He and I both had fun. Please don’t think less of me.

I wore the little guy out. He kind of hops around now when I get the broom out wanting to play some more.

Kodi the Pomeranian Puppy

We brought Kodi, our new Pomeranian puppy, home on Thursday. He made himself right at home.

He’s very affectionate and cuddly. He knows his name. As soon as we picked the name the breeder started using it with him.

He’s just two pounds and the best way to interact with him to get down on the floor with him. He loves to play with his toys.

We think he and our Lizzie cat might become friends. They lay next to each other and Lizzie lets Kodi clean her ears until she gets overloaded and hisses and runs off.

We took him to the vet today for his initial exam and puppy shots. He was a hit. He got passed around to everyone and he was totally fine with it. He got his shots and he is a little sore this afternoon.

Anyway, we think we have a keeper.
