Saturday’s Critters – On the River

Egrets and great blue herons sharing the prime fishing spot downstream of the Zink Lake Dam.

More sharing downstream of the dam.

Here is one fishing with one leg. Or maybe sleeping. I don’t know, its eyes are open.

And a human fishing from the rocks at the dam.

Headed back to the car on the bike path I come upon this gaggle of geese.

These pics are from my bike ride early this week. My knee has been feeling much better. I woke Wednesday and I had some bad back spasms. My wife drove me to the Urgent Care and the on duty Nurse Practioner, prescribed me some muscle relaxers, and she gave me the old man side to side hug telling me that I should take a week off from my bicycling, hiking, weight training, and yoga. My wife was in there and thought it was a hoot that I am officially elderly and harmless in the medical world’s eyes. I’m good with it, I will never say no to hug from somebody nice. So this morning (Saturday) I woke up and I think I might live for a little while longer. Yesterday I wasn’t so sure. Tell you what though, the medication makes me not want to drink alcohol. I’m afraid my stash might be getting out of date.

“Saturday’s Dam Critters”

Last Tuesday I loaded up my bike and went for a ride on the RiverParks trails here in Tulsa mainly to check on the brand spanking new pedestrian bridge and dam across the Arkansas River. I purposely missed the “Big Dam Party” that RiverParks put on for the opening over the Labor Day weekend.

IMG_3570

So here is the new bridge, 1000 feet long from bank to bank. The dam is just on the other side of the bridge.

After big crowds during the party, I had the bridge to myself.

IMG_3559

Down below the dam I saw this Great Blue Heron.

IMG_3572

And a great egret.

IMG_3561

And at one spot there were a bunch of egrets and blue herons together.

IMG_3566

And three cats resting on the riverbank. Actually one cat and two Komatsu’s.

IMG_3564

And a human critter jogging.

IMG_3567

And two other human critters walking their dog.

IMG_3565

And some oil and oil product storage tanks for the nearby refinery. A human critter on the bridge asked another human critter what they were for and the person said that President Biden outlawed oil storage in city limits and they were pretty sure that the City of Tulsa took them over to store water in case of a drought. Okay then. (Not true by the way).

Saturday’s Critters – Birds of a Feather

IMG_3558

This sight greeted me the other morning. A red shouldered hawk squatting on my trailcam in our backyard. I think he was looking for a mouse. We have bird feeders in the backyard which attracts a few birds and a whole bunch of squirrels and a few mice.

DSCF0524

The trailcam captured this cat in our backyard a while back. I’m thinking he might be carrying a mouse in his mouth.

_DSC0431

I went to Philbrook Museum of Art the other day. I saw this squirrel resting for the intense midday heat.

And this big ole hippo sculpture made out of car bumpers.

IMG_3555

I rode my bike on the Arkansas River the other day and found this egret fishing in the Arkansas River.

IMG_3554

And this group of geese hanging out.

IMG_3552

And this cross species collection of egrets and great blue herons sharing their fishing grounds.

IMG_3550

After years of construction Tulsa is opening up the new pedestrian bridge and putting the new Zink Lake Dam into service this weekend. I’m going to wait until the hubbub has died down a little bit before I go check it out.

Saturday’s Critters – Oxley Nature Center

IMG_3138

In early August I ventured up to Tulsa’s Oxley Nature Center.

IMG_3137

They have lots of deer up there. Sometimes I find them and sometimes I don’t. This time I found three groups.

IMG_3150

They are wary but not skittish like deer who have been hunted.

IMG_3154

If you stand still long enough, they ignore you.

IMG_3152

I found this mama with a fawn.

IMG_3149

Lots of birds out that day also. They were way off so the photos are a little fuzzy.

IMG_3136

And a dragonfly!!

Critters on the River and at Home

IMG_2833

I spotted this Great Egret on the Arkansas River during a recent bicycle ride.

IMG_2832

This is another one. He was standing still and got tired of waiting on me. I was lucky to catch him in flight.

IMG_2839

Our hummingbird feeder is getting regular visits now. Problem is that wasps and hornets are also visiting and they don’t like hummingbirds. So I’m trying to figure out what to do about it. I hate to kill native pollinators.

Lizzie thinks we got this tray in the living room for her. She thinks everything in the house is for her!

And our little Pomeranian, Rascal. He is very sick with cancer in one lung, congestive heart failure, and other issues. Vet said that he doesn’t know he is sick so just love every moment we have together with him and we are pumping full of meds and supplements. The weather has cooled a bit so we are taking him on short walks. He sure does love his outings. They wipe him the rest of the day but he’s happy. We are doing our best for him to live his best life.

Tulsa Wildlife Update

I went hiking earlier this week on Turkey Mountain here in Tulsa. I came across this tiny frog traversing the trail.

IMG_2815

I also went for a bike ride and took my camera with me again. As I was going down the trail I spotted a bald eagle flying high over me but headed down to the river. So I pulled out and spotted this guy fishing. That’s two weeks in a row I’ve seen a bald eagle in approximately the same location. Sorry for the fuzzy photo. I was at the far end of the range of my Canon Superzoom.

IMG_2809

I also found this egret, or white heron or something several miles north of the Eagle out in the river looking for lunch.

IMG_2802

And white pelicans on a sandbar.

IMG_2803

And a log with two pairs of turtles. I didn’t know that momma turtles gave baby turtles piggy back (turtle back?) rides.

IMG_2799

And a great blue heron. Again at pretty good range. They are skittish!!

That’s it for this week. I am linking with Eileen’s Saturday’s Critters. Lots of really good posts there. Check it out.

Arkansas River Critters

Last Monday I braved the heat for a bike ride on Tulsa’s RiverParks trails bordering the Arkansas River as it flows through town. I took my Canon SuperZoom camera along in a backpack hoping to take some photos.

Great Egret

I found what I think are great egrets. (I’m not a very good birder so if you have better ID I would appreciate it very much.) This one was looking for lunch in the shallow water.

egrets 01

This nearby group seemed more into grooming than eating.

Great Blue Heron

Further down the river I spotted this great blue heron. They are very skittish and so by the time I stopped my bike, and retrieved the camera from the backpack and focused, this guy was ready to leave.

pelican 04

Nearby, this group of pelicans were hanging out together.

bald eagle 01

I saw something black with a white spot almost clear to the other riverbank. It turns out that it is a bald eagle. The first image of one I have captured in the wild. Sorry about the poor quality but it was at the far range of the camera.

I was pretty happy with my photos. Again, if I have misidentified any of them please let me know.
