Saturday’s Critters – Last of January 2026

DSCF0951

It has been very cold here in Tulsa after our snow. Sadie has finally adapted. She loves to go outside and run around in the snow.

It exhausts her though. So she falls asleep in my lap while I’m watching tv at night.

Snow doesn’t phase our little Pom Kodi at all. We put him on a diet and it seems to be working so now he’s wanting to play fetch with me and Sadie, and he and Sadie chase each other around the house. He’s livened up quite a bit.

Male Northern Cardinal

I’ve been trying to keep the birds fed using suet balls and other high energy foods. This cardinal wasn’t complaining.

Carolina Wren

I think this is a Carolina Wren that came by for a bite.

We get dark eyed juncos both on the feeder and on the ground.

There is something special about juncos.

And the opposite for the quiet juncos at the bluejays. Squawk, squawk, they say whenever they visit,.

And we get lots of doves. This one is all puffed up against the cold.

We had a bunch of hawks one afternoon. Noisy and boistrous.

Lots of squirrels.

That’s it for this week.

I’m linking with Eileen’s Saturday’s Critters. Check it out, lots of great photographers who love all sorts of animals.

Sadie the Rescue Dog

Sadie, the rescue dog. We got her around Saint Patrick’s Day this year and she is gradually settling in with us in her forever home. She is very sweet and loving but she doesn’t take any foolishness from our male pom Kodi. If he gets aggressive she just flips him over on his back and holds him down with one paw. It’s kind of hilarious.

Saturday’s Critters – Seen on a Bike Ride

I went on a bike ride the other day on Tulsa’s Riverparks Trails during a very unseasonably warm day.

IMG_3209

I saw two groups of white pelicans on the river. They were both all hunkered down. I hope that they will get going to where they need to be for the winter.

IMG_3211

The canadian geese are here all year long in Tulsa. Many of them still migrate south but I guess the others have figured out what some of politicians haven’t, that global warming is a thing.

IMG_3212

And I saw a few great blue herons. They are everywhere. Back in the day when I still worked I was out in the natural gas fields of western Oklahoma and I stopped on a dirt road to make a cell phone call and suddenly noticed in the field next to where I parked there were a bunch of great blue herons. Not in a pond or water, just standing there in a field. I took a pic but it is long gone. Well before the days I knew about storing and tagging and all that other stuff.

IMG_3221

I found a bunch of seagulls clear across the river.

Turkey Mountain Colors 2

I stopped and took a photo of the foliage on Turkey Mountain across the river. I never get tired of seeing it.

Plaque

Nearby was this plaque commemorating the first Oklahoma Game Ranger killed in the line of duty. He was game ranger murdered in the line of duty in Oklahoma. On Turkey Mountain investigating a poaching case. I don’t think it was ever solved.

Back in the day, Turkey Mountain had a bootleggers, lawmen, oil field hands, ranchers, railroad men, and farmers. I have personally found “shake and bake” meth labs. It has a shady past. So does Tulsa for that matter. Machine gun Kelly, Pretty Boy Floyd, John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, Ma Barker. They all have Tulsa ties. Read more about Tulsa’s shady past here.

Oops I digressed. I am continually fascinated by the dichotomy of Tulsa. On the east bank are big companies, operas, ballet companies, symphonies, wonderful museums and on the gritty west side, like Turkey Mountain, refineries, oilfield manufacturing, factories is where the money was made to pay for all the nice stuff. That is where the outlaws hung out.

Oops one more thing,

Excuse my appearance, I’m retired so I get kind of scruffy. That is me, (of course) and Lizzy early in the morning. I read the paper and drink coffee in the morning and she reads over my shoulder. I keep telling her that is rude but she won’t stop.

Saturday’s Critters – Roadrunner

Roadrunner

I was in Albuquerque last weekend and came across this roadrunner at a local park. It was a little shy and kept a constant distance from me and wouldn’t turn around or give me a profile view for nothing. I lived in New Mexico for years and I don’t think I ever saw one. When I worked summers in the oilfields of west Texas I saw lots of them. Of course back then we didn’t have smart phones snapping away at anything that moved.

Cats in the House

Here is Lizzie doing what she does best, napping. She was impatient with us as we put a Christmas quilt on the bed. We were delaying her nap. You can tell she is kind of grumpy about it.

I vacuumed the house yesterday. When I found cat toys underneath furniture I’d vacuum off the dust bunny’s and put them in this tray. She always like to see her toys again. But then she loses them. She’s napping here using a coaster for a pillow. Our vet told us she needed to go on a diet. Only two scoops of kibble per day. She thinks I need to use a bigger scoop.

Here’s LJ chilling. He’s happy, the vet said he could have all the food he wants. He’s kind of old and has kidney problems and he’s loving his new food. He has a lot more energy now.

Here’s LJ with a Hipstamatic Filter. I filters of all types. I unashamedly and unembarrassingly use a lot of them.

That’s it for this week. Check out Saturday’s Critters!
